Daniel's Ridge Supercross: Shayn Adkins (13), Skylar Payne (3) and Glenn Balfour (10) battle in the Unlimited Mini class In Taylorsville, North Carolina. Fast Fridays Speedway: Bobby Hedden (63) went around Bart Bast (1) for the Scratch main-event win in Auburn, California. The event was a "double Hedden," as Bobby also won the Handicap main event. Hedden's pace toward the front of the pack was so rapid that he put himself into the lead as starter/co-promoter Mark Joiner was just astic assortment of racers and fans who were in the area for round 10 of the Grand National Championship Flat Track Series, held at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina, the follOWing night. Fifteen riders advanced from three preliminary rounds and a last-chance qualifier to the main event, which carried a purse of $4,500. Noot Irvin, on a borrowed bike, led the first 11 laps of the 20-lap main, with Garth Brow in close pursuit. However, Johnson then mounted a charge, putting away Brow and Irvin, and went unchallenged for the remaining laps. Irvin placed second, and Brow held off Kevin Atherton for third. Gary Nixon, the 1967-68 Grand National Champion, was on hand to congratulate the winners. Atherton lost an engine during practice but still managed to qualify and place fourth in the main on a Honda CR450F-based machine owned by track promoter Henry Perritt. Jared Mees and Robert Lewis, notables on the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance circuit, captured fifth and sixth in the main. Brow added some excitement to the heat races with his qualifying time of 19:02, earning himself a spot on the pole and a $100 check from Winners Circle Motorsports. Brow and other Pros continue to try to beat the track record of 18:69, set by Chris Carr in March 2002. An Open Amateur race was held after the Pro Shootout, with Jerry Stokes taking the win over Zeb Morton and Eddie Stokes. The fast quarter-mile oval at Mid-Carolina Speedway hosts races once per month for some 17 trophy and money divisions. Classes beginning to wave the white flag. Essary took second away from Browne just about the same time that Hedden was taking the win away from everyone. Third went to Carrillo, Browne held on to fourth, and Felicio and Faria trailed in fifth IOlld sixth. Typically, in the Scratch main, most riders would rather draw the two inside starting positions, but for an adrenalin-pumped outside specialist such as Hedden, a lane-four draw just puts him closer to where he's headed anyway. With Bart "Simpson" Bast on the pole, Chris Manchester in lane two and "Flyin'" Mike Faria in three, the Scratch main was packed with current and former Speedway champions. At the start, Bast was quicker off the line than "Manny" or Faria, but Hedden was the first rider in the first turn and took the initial lead. Once Hedden established himself in front, the race became a "Hedden Mistake Watch" that never came to fruition. Bast stayed close to "The Blaze" but was forced to settle for the second-place points. Faria, who was the only other rider to make both mains, finished third, and Manchester, who had looked so fast earlier in the evening, rolled across in fourth. It was Hedden's second Scratch main win in a row, sandwiched around the previous week's North vs. South team race. In Division Two action, George Snodgrass won the second restart when race leader Mike Browne faltered in the final set of turns. Stephen Lewotsky held off Mike Achilles to win his first Division Three main event. The Youth mains were won by Danny Easley, Jay Ricketts and Ronnie Woodsford. It was the second win of the season for Ricketts, while Easley won his third and Woodsford his fifth. range from 50cc up to 505cc, and include Vintage, Senior, Amateur, Pro, Motocross, Novice and ATV divisions. Daniel's Ridge Supercross Payne Gains the Win By MARK NEUEI'IS TAYLORSVILLE, NC, JULY 27 With the track in shape for the race, a lastminute thundershower dumped about an inch of rain on the freshly tumed dirt, but the experienced staff at Daniel's Ridge Supercross went right to work to get the track back in racing condition. By race time, despite a few slick spots, the track was ready to go. In the first Unlimited Mini moto, Shayn Adkins took the holeshot, followed by Glenn Balfour, Skylar Payne and Thomas Neuens. Balfour passed Payne in the whoop section to take over second. On lap two, Adkins took the out side of the dual-path back section and Balfour followed. Payne and Neuens took the faster two jumps inside, and Payne made the Results vented him from going around. At the front jumps, Payne got beside Adkins but had the inside line going into the tum at the whoops and went underneath Adkins for first and opened up a lead. Neuens tried to get next to Adkins, but Adkins held his lead. Coming around the back section for the last time, Adkins took the out- side again while Neuens took the inside track, and the fast line gave him the pass on Adkins to take second. Adkins took third, while Balfour took fourth. In the second moto, Adkins took the holeshot again, followed by Payne, Balfour and Neuens. Adkins took the inside track in the back section, keeping him in front of Payne. Balfour was right behind Payne, showing him a tire in the whoops, but Payne pulled away. Balfour took the outside of the back section while Payne took the inside and Payne gained some ground on Balfour. Adkins was out front, running his race with a lead on Payne. Then Payne started to pick up the pace after the white flag, gaining ground on Adkins. Neuens was trying to catch Balfour, and in the back section, Balfour went to the outside and Neuens took the inside to gain on Balfour. Coming around the front straightaway, Adkins, who held the lead the whole race, got into the soft part of the straightaway and got crossed up and went down. He got up quickly, but Payne, Balfour and Neuens passed him. Payne finished first with a 1- 1 tally; Neuens was second with a 2-3 score; Balfour placed third with 4-2 finishes, and Adkins was fourth with a 3-4 score. Results SCR: 1. Bobby Hedden (0/1\); 2. Then Balfour tried to retake his position, going side by side with Payne in the whoops, but Payne held it and Balfour was wide, beside Payne, going into the turn and Neuens shot up under, following Payne to make the pass on Balfour.
