Springs Motorcycle Club action. Toye beat
class champion Chuck Graves in another
hotly contested race.
Toye grabbed the lead off the line on his
Lee's Cycle Racing·sponsored Suzuki GSX·
R1000, with Graves second and Jason Perez
third. At the end of the first of 12 laps, Chris
Ulrich rocketed into third, passing both Perez
and Jack Pfeiffer. A lap later, Graves pulled
alongside Toye down the front straight, but
Toye shut him out going into tum one. Mean·
while, Pfeifer continued to challenge Ulrich,
but over the next few laps Ulrich opened up a
gap between himself and his challengers.
Graves once agZlin drafted Toye down the
front straight to start the sixth lap, and going
into tum one Graves emerged with the lead.
However, Toye grabbed the lead back in the
next tum. Two laps later, Graves repeated the
same maneuver and this time made it stick for
two laps· until he was passed by Toye on the
inside of turn two as the penultimate lap got
under way. Toye was just ahead of Graves at
the start of the white·flag lap. Rounding tum
four, the leaders came up on lapped traffic
and GrZlves was slowed just enough to allow
Toye to take the victory. Graves was second
and Ulrich finished third.
"We've been testing a lot of suspensions
and at the last minute got just the right one,"
Toye said on the victory stand. "To be able to
run up at Chuck's pace, everything's got to be
just right."
Toye took another victory in the L(,L
Motorsports 750cc Superbike race. He
emerged with the holeshot, followed by Yin·
cent HllIskovec in an early second and Jeff
Stem in third. Rounding tum two for the first
time, Haskovec powered past Toye on the
inside to tlllke over the lead. However, Toye
then drafted and passed Haskovec down the
back straight. Midway through lap three of six,
Haskovec seemed to lose ground to Toye and,
exiting tum nine, he pulled off the course and
into the pits with a mechanical problem, pro·
moting Stem into second and Frank Atagaki
into third. With no changes in the top three,
Toye took the win, with Stern second and
Atagaki third.
Graves led off the line in the 600cc Super
Stock race, with Jacob West running second,
followed by Perez and Toye. Perez powered
past West between turns two and three, but
both racers were demoted a spot after Toye
made a daring pass in tum three, moving into
second. West used the draft to pass Perez on
the front straight to start lap three, moving
himself up into third. The top three stayed the
same for the remZlinder of the six-lap sprint
race, and at the line it was Graves with the
win, followed by Toye and West.
