East Bend Speedway Humphrey Shows up the Boys By MARK NEUENS EAST BEND, NC, JULY 14 At round two of AMA District 29 Summer/Fall Series, the sky opened up and let East Bend Speedway have the rain she's needed. Only she did not need it on race day. It was still raining in the morning, and the track was a thick soup. After looking over the track, a few brave riders tried to make a round to see what could be done. In the end, part of the track was roped off to make a circle. Riders would have to go over a couple of jumps, although nobody was doing any actual jumping. Evelyn Humphrey, contesting the 85cc D aboard an FMF-backed RM250 Suzuki, Glover one was the most interesting, as Doug Ben- surprisingly entered three classes - the 250cc jamin led most of the way but developed motor problems on the final lap, allowing Northern California's Rachalle Kerr, the field's A Expert class, the Over 30 A (money) class, and the Over 40 division. After cruising to a seventh spot in 250cc A, Glover went at the only female rider, to sneak through for the win over Benjamin and DeWayne Stark. The blown motor ended Benjamin's night early. Zellner came back from his round-one fall to win the opening ride of round two, over Over 30 A class with a vengeance, After a third-place start, he quickly got around Yama- ha-mounted Mark Roop and holeshot artist Curt Rehmert, aboard his Yoshimura/Suzuki of Greenville-sponsored Suzuki DR-Z440. Blaydes also Glover also took on Yamaha of Troy boss kept his score perfect with a win over Williams Phil "Flipper" Alderton and local hero "King" Richard Robinson in the very-old-dudes' Over and Hampel. Medellin opened round three with a victory over Zellner and Kerr. Then Stunkard ended up with a perfect score in the heats, as he defeated Botsford while Templeton threw it away. Blaydes got the hole shot on the field in the next heat and he sped away from Medellin and Stark. Finally, Mellor ied from wire to wire to end the heat races with 40 class. Glover took it to the immense gang of aged motocrossers, taking the win ahead of the King and Alderton. Michigan's Over 40 fast guy David Mack came in fourth, ahead of California's Rob Healy. With one moto being the order of the day, the Amateur races were fast and furious, with riders coming from all over to compete, including many speedy riders from Florida a win over Kerr and Kreps. A tally of the points showed that Stunkard and Blaydes both had perfect nine-point and California - although the local stars gained most of the wins. Suzuki-mounted Kyle Preston was incredible on the day. The Westerville youth and part-time soccer star screamed his yellow machines in for three scores, ensuring them of a spot in the main. Mellor and Medellin both had eight points, so they would join Blaydes and Stunkard in the main. 66 AUGUST 21, 2002 cue I class, came out of the starting gate first, leav· e n e _ s East Bend Speedway: Dylan Carringer plows through the mud in the 50cc (4-6) class at the second round of the AMA District 29 SummerlFall Series in East Bend, North Carolina.
