lead for two laps before Hicks ran him down and took over the lead. He appear to have the lead in the bag, but he didn't count on Brant knifing through the field, and he was right on his tail with three laps to go. The pass came on the last lap, and it was bam-burner: Brant got through in the nick of time as Hicks went down as they came out of two. Brant came away with the win and the double for the night. Since a red flag was thrown for safety, it was charged to Hicks, and he was credited with last. Castro was second, ahead of Schwartz, Laurer and DeFries. For the first time at Arrowhead, the flattrack motorcycles were on hand, and they did pretty good on a track somewhat smaller than most of the riders are used to. They have to work out some of the Handicap bugs to see who lines up where, but the race was fun. Ray Hensely led the troops around for the first iap, but then Dave Johnson took over at the front. He kept the field at bay until the white-flag lap, when veteran Joe Steffen took the lead and showed the boys why he has been such a major player for so many years. Johnson was good for second, with another veteran, Rick Schroeder, placing third. Rounding out the field were Mark Ledbetter, Alex Wood, Hensley and Elliott Iverson. Glauan battled all day for the fourth- and fifthplace positions; their war ended up being just as good a battle as the one for first and second. "Chuck lays out an awesome course," said Lojak, who added that, with more support, this series could take off. "More riders need to come out to experience it for themselves." The race ended up with Woodford Winning, Blackwell scoring runner-up honors, Bennett placing third, Glauan taking fourth, and Lojak finishing fifth. It seems that all the riders who've competed in the new series are enjoying every bit of the tight trails, and they speak highly of the race. Greenlee's very excited about his series. "I just want the guys to come out and have a good time and spread the word," said Greenlee, who also wanted to thank Lojak's Yamaha Racing, Davis Cycle Sales, Grove City Motorsports, Augustine KTM, Five Star Cycle, WER, FMF, Ron Hartman Concrete, Pirelli, DP Brakes, Kosmic Signs & Designs, Thor and Renthal for all of their support. Brant Doubles at Arrowhead By ELAlNE JONES SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 10 Only one rider in Southern California had won both main events in one night at both Costa Mesa and Arrowhead Motor Speedway: Scott Brant. Brant put together two awesome rides at Arrowhead to win both the Scratch and Handicap main events. Brant came back late last year after a few years of retirement and he is riding like he's making up for lost time. Brant won the first Scratch semi over Gary Hicks, John DeFries and Jeff Blaydes. Ed Castri won the second semi over Bryan Yarrow, Bobby Schwartz and Shaun Harmatiuk. Hannatiuk won Consi, over Schwartz and Blaydes. DeFries was unable to finish. In the Scratch main, the pole went to Castro, but right next to him was Brant. Hicks was in three and Yarrow was against the wall. Brant exploded off the line and into the lead, with Castro right behind him. Castro likes to play out in the dirt, which is not such a good thing when racing with Brant, who uses the low line of the track. No matter how hard he tried, there was no way Castro was going to get around Brant. Hicks was running third, hoping they both leaders would make a mistake, but he would have to settle for third. Yarrow was fourth. The Handicap main had one rider on the zero-yard line: Rudy Laurer. On the 10 was DeFries. Hicks and Schwartz shared the 40, Brant and Castro on the 50. Laurer had the Club Moto It's Braden Raidin' Livermore By RANDY HElM LIVERMORE, CA, JULY 12 With only one round remaining in the Mutant Motorsports Friday Night Series, the final spots are almost decided. Some classes are still only separated by a few points, while others have already been decided. No one is letting off the gas, and the racing has remained close. Mark Braden did the best he could this Friday, winning both the 50cc (7-8) and 50cc Open classes. Braden is determined to take these titles. Braden won convincingly in the 50cc (7-8) class with two moto wins. Polini pilot Elric Flory was the early leader in moto one, with Braden following closely on his Polini. It was looking good for Flory until the last lap, when Braden took over the lead and crossed the line first. Flory finished second, and Zach Van Meter finished third on a Cobra. Arrowhead Motor Speedway: Scott Brant (10) won the Scratch main in San Bernardino, California, ahead of Ed Castro, Gary Hicks and Bryan Yarrow. 62 AUGUST 14, 2002' 0 U 0 I e n e _ so Van Meter took the early lead in moto two, with Braden in second and Flory third. Van Meter appeared to have the needed speed, but he was unable to hold off Braden. On lap three, Braden went by Van Meter and then set his sights on the checkers. Flory was still lurking in third, but he couldn't get past Van Meter. At the finish line, it was Braden first, Van Meter second and Flory third. Braden took the overall with a 1-1 tally, while Van Meter earned second with his 3-2 score and Flory finished third via his 2-3 finishes. In the 50cc Open contest, Braden traded moto wins with Flory to take the overall. Flory led the entire first moto to win easily over Braden and KTM rider Wesley Caspillo, who finished third. The second moto was Braden's tum to lead, with Flory finishing second and Caspillo again finishing third. Braden took the overall with a 2-1 tally, over Flory's 1-2 score. Caspillo finished third with solid 3-3 finishes. In the Over 30 Intermediate class, It was all about Gary Forrest, who ran up front in both motos, banging bars with the Over 30 Pros. In moto one, Forrest was leadjng early, with Curtis Hanson following and Jason Bordelow in third. Forrest went unchallenged and put his Yamaha across the line first. Hanson, unable to catch Forrest, finished second, and Bordeiow, on his Yamaha, finished third. Moto two was more of the same for Forrest, who again took the win. Honda-mounted Bordelow moved up one spot to second, and Hanson finished third. Forrest took the overall with a 1-1 performance, over Bordelow's 3-2 finishes and Hanson's 2-3 tally. Luke Layton was the Mini Dash For Cash winner. He rode the wheels off his Suzuki to earn another win - and some spending money. On a side note, Beau Weigand started the race facing backward (on a bet) and still finished a close second. The Big-Bike Dash For Cash was won by Club Moto regular Mike Northrop. It was a three-way battle between Northrop, David Gassin and Eric McCrummen. In the end, Northrop walked away with the money. Results PfW SHAFT: I. Daniel Oorualez (Yam): 2. Cely Johnson (Han); 3. SOBER AUBURN, CA, JULY 12 J.J. Martynse took the reins away from fellow former Junior Speedway rider Greg Hooton Jr. early In the Maita Ford/Fast Fridays Handicap main event; and then held on to take his firstever Division One main-event win. Martynse was stationed at the front of the six-rider main, to the outside of Hooton. Twenty yards to their rear was the recent Backwards main-event champion, veteran Paul Orlandi. Eric Carrillo, the 1999 Junior champion, was on the 30. Tommy Hedden occupied the 40, and his brother Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden sat alone on the 50. Hooton got the jump on Martynse at the outset, but a nifty outside pass in tum two put Martynse in the lead. Meanwhile, The Blaze was making major headway toward the front of the pack, moving up behind second-placed Carrillo by the end of lap two. Carrillo had his hands full trying to hold off the obviously faster veteran. "I took it easy on Carrillo tonight," Bobby said afterward. "I could have pushed on him a little harder, but I didn't want to Earnhardt him. But by the time I got around him, J.J. was gone and I didn't have anything for him." Martynse had his first win, Bobby coasted across in second, and Carrillo held on to third, ahead of Orlandi, Tommy and Hooton, who struggled after his spot-on start. Bobby Hedden, who stayed on the somewhat slick inside line to capture second place in the Handicap main, used a different tactic in the Scratch main, which ultimately led to a better result. "Man, I don't know where that traction came from in turn two," Bobby said. "I just feathered that clutch all the way through the turns, and it worked." Bobby started the main from what track announcer Mike Rooney affectionately calls "that stinky old lane three." Bart "Simpson" Bast had the pole, Chad Felicio was in two, and Scotty Brant was in lane four. At the start, Fast Fridays Speedway: J.J. Martynse (115) swoops around Greg Hooton (212) on his way to the Handicap main-event victory in Auburn, California.
