PEllETT NELSONVILLE, OH, JUNE 30 With a change in the schedule from years past and a brand-new track on which to compete, the old Ohio State Buckeye Motocross Championship Series got new life with a change of venue and a fresh new start. With a little over 500 racers turning out at round one for a chance at contingency money, cash and endof-series awards, this prestigious and challenging series offers the competitive Amateur racer the opportunity to excel and get rewarded for their motocross efforts. Packed gates and gaggles of talented riders meant some great racing at this newly designed Action Sports motocross course. The Pro classes were stocked with heavy hitters. as locals as well as riders from nearby states came out to try to earn their keep, motocross style. Once again, with another weekend off from his regular job riding the AMA Nationals circuit, Jeff Gibson of Thomvilie was the Expert to beat. He won ali four motos of the 125cc and 250cc A classes. even earning the special bonus from promoter Drew Wolfe for having won the Pro mains during the Midwest Supercross Championships the night before, at the more-technical stadium track. Top finishers included fast Ohio riders Charlie Dunaway, Brad Strunk, David "Pee Wee" Whitcraft, Mike Katin, "Wild" Willy Browning, and Andy Willard. While Gibson was barely challenged all day, Strunk and Dunaway kept things interesting by not allowing Gibson too much distance, as they both were clearing the same insane finish-line launch that Gibson was leaping. The jump, which launched riders both high and long, was both spectacular and breathtaking; properly negotiated, it would send riders over the finish-line step-up to dear a dip and then land on the following tabletop or, hopefully, clear it. Team Green's Justin Weeks had a twoclass outing: He stormed home with the overalls in the 65cc and Mini Junior classes. In a repeat performance from the night before, brothers Walker and Hunter Brightwell tore up the 50cc age classes, while McArthur's Ethan Scarberry was the victor in the Pee Wee Oil-Injected class. Nathan Skaggs and Matt Barnes went at it for bragging rights, as Ohio's fastest Intermediate riders were on hand to battle each other in Nelsonville. Skaggs won both 125cc B motos, yet Barnes' 2-1 tally was good enough to beat Skaggs (1-2) for the 250cc B title. Pennsylvania's Dustin Wyne owned the C classes. The Novice racer was perfect on his Kawasaki, as the man from Monongahela rode to four moto wins in both the 125cc and 250cc C classes. Pomeroy's Jason Frecker beat the very quick Mike Ivers for the 16-24-c1ass win, while The "King," Richard Robinson, was temporarily dethroned (and stunned) by Jerry Sales of Kent, Ohio. Robinson, not used to getting beaten in the Over 40 class, was disturbed by Sales' masterful 2-1 finishes, besting the King's unroyal )-2 tally. Results P/W 50: I. Ethan Scarbeny (Yam): 2. J.T. DENNISON, OH, JULY 7 As the District )2 Championship Series swept into Beans Bike Park for round four, Strongsville, Ohio's Carl Schlact had plans for doing some sweeping of his own. The McCune Cycle KTM rider simply dominated all six of his motos, reeling off wins in the 125cc B, 250cc Band 16-24 Collegeboy classes. Grabbing the lead early was key, and from there Schlact was able to pull a gap on his BWRsuspended KTMs that had the rest of the pack fighting for second. Winning that battle for second in the 125cc B class was A.J. Hattery of Navarre, Ohio, with Honda rider Scott Hickenbottom taking the final podium spot. Hattery also put his Suzuki on top of the 125cc Schoolboy class, over Paul Leimbach and Ryan Slingluff. Also finishing in Schlact's shadow was Carrolton's Kevin Ott, who took the runner-up honors in the 16-24 Collegeboy class. Ott would get his chance to shine, though. as the Suzuki rider was able to top the 125cc C class, over the 250cc riders Darrin Beardmore and Ryan Boatman on the jumpy, sawduststrewn circuit. The A classes belonged to Kawasaki jockey David Herb, though second-place finisher J8son Rogers held the young Pro at bay for a bit in the 250cc class aboard his CRF450R. Herb would not relent, however, and worked his way around en route to two class victories on the day. John Sims put his Suzuki into third in the 125cc A class, and Gary Bruce took third in the 250cc A division. , In the Mini classes, moving up a class cer· tainly did not lessen the speed of Polini rider Zachary Knotts. The Akron, Ohio, racer moved to the 7- to 8-year-old age division this year, and he was able to top the class over KTM rider Logan Kamow and Yamaha-mounted Christy King. Josh Leemaster took over where Knotts left off in the younger Pee Wee division, putting himself on top of an all-Cobra podium. Weslee Withers and Braden Rue put their KX65s on top of the 65cc (7 -9) and (10- 11 ) classes, respectively, and Michael Btauman returned to racing after an early-season femur injury to capture the win in the 85cc (7-11) class. Thomas Becket and Paul Leimbach also took the checkers in the heat, with Beckett taking the Senior Mini win and Leimbach scoring the Supermini win; this completed a Kawasaki sweep on the c1utch·and·shift Mini classes. Boyers AWRCS Big AWRCS Win to Woodford By GRETCHEN ORTON BOYERS, PA, JULY 7 The long-awaited second race of the American Woods Racing Championship Series took place at the old GNCC racing venue in Boyers, Pennsylvania. Due to a cancellation of the Waynesburg race, a whopping $1000 was offered for the win, which made for a grueling barn-burner ali the way to the checkers. Promoter Chuck Greenlee laid out an awesome course, bringing together tight woods, tough uphills, deep creek crossings, and one big mud hole. There was also a long grasstrack incorporated into the mix, which was laid out with the help of grasstrack guru Russ Cherry. Chuck Woodford held the lead of this race from the beginning, with Doug Blackweli and J.T. Bennett close on his heels. Blackwell was able to lock in his second-place position after Bennett ran into some trouble at the mudhole. "The mudhole kept everyone on their toes, n Woodford recounted. "I got stuck in it once and heard Doug coming ... it made me a little nervous until I heard his big thumper also get stuck." Blackwell also mentioned how much enjoyed the track.
