AMI District 14 Michigan Hare Scrambles Series Round 8: Bent Wheels Competition Club Parlin Dusts 'em at Bent Wheels By MARK SPORE cm, ROSE MI, JULY 14 The Bent Wheels Competition Club hosted round eight of the AMA District 14 Hare Scrambles Series in Rose City, MIchigan. As the northeast region of the United States has had little or no rain for quite some time, the series faithful could be assured of one thing come race day: dusl A whole bunch of dust. Even though Mother Nature did not cooperate. the Bent Wheels staff did a great job of attempting to make the track as enjoyable as possible. The course routed riders backward through previously used sections, including grasstracks and some tight single-track. This, combined with several challenging woodenbridge crossings and a jump-filled motocross track, made the 6.5-mile course difficult. With temperatures climbing above the gO-degree mark, hydration and conditioning were impor· tant factors throughout the three-hour event. As the cast of regular Michigan Expert riders lined up for the start of the race, it appeared that the series points leader, Corey Parlin, had added some new plastic to his KTM )00. As Parlin would announce at the awards presentation after the race, th8t was not the case. The Lansing Cycle/Enduro Engineering/Moose-sponsored rider was having engine difficulties prior to the race and was graciously offered a replacement bike to use by fellow competitor Scott Luca. Instead of trying to acclimate to Lucas' setup, Parlin elected not to ride the parade lap, instead using the time to take the suspension and other key items off of his bike and place them on Lucas' 250. Honda-mounted Travis Tudethout led the Michigan Experts for the first lap, letting the rest of his competitors know that his badly damaged shoulder Is healing up well. Following in the large amount of dust that Tudethout was creating was Parlin, who was being chased by F&S Suzuki-supported Blair Bersano and Yamaha-mounted Aaron Wegner. Parlin took the lead on the third lap, with all four riders within 20 seconds of each other. Wegner again fell victim to bike problems, and he was forced to pull out after five laps. ~""':II"!'::T;""""---;-------------------------'W a: :r
