Muddy Creek Raceway: Team Green veteran Earl May kept his cool at the annual Kawasaki Volunteer Slate MX Championships in Blountville, Tennessee, locking up wins in both the Over 25 A and Over 35 classes. and took off, hounded by Colten Maynard, Blake Wharton, Tyler Bright, Tyler Wharton, et cetera. Qualifier winners Austin Stroupe and Dominic Izzi were brought down by a crash and mechanical failure, leaving Bowers the overall win. Possibly the most surprising performance of the weekend was given by New Yorker Ryan Mills. Virtually unknown in the Southeast, Mills posted convincing wins in the 125cc Schoolboy and Pro Cash classes, and then gave Walker fits in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Mills snatched the 250cc A win from Walker, who's generally conceded to be the King of Muddy Creek (succeeding National I 25cc MX Champion Mike Brown). Reportedly, Walker had wrenched his knee a week earlier and adopted the strategy of keeping off his feet as much as possible except while riding. Team Green's Gavin Gracyk was in the hunt for a top-five finish in both Pro classes but was also off his game because of a sprained ankle. Mills suckered Walker with a banzai downhill pass approaching the Bradshaw Chicane in the first 125cc A moto, and was then unpassable. In the second round, Walker got the jump on the start and then tried to put some distance on Mills, who had gated about fifth. Although Mills passed the intervening riders and reeled in Walker, he had been slowed enough that the anticipated winning pass could not be executed. Muddy Creek Raceway Blountville. SANOERSON CUFFORD, PA, JULY 4 Apparently at least 260 motocross enthusiasts feel there's no better way to celebrate our nation's birthday than to race. Besides, what better place is there for a barbecue or cookout than at the track? Okay, so there weren't any fireworks. but there was enough noise from the two-strokes and booming thumpers to fill the air for miles around. 68 AUGUST 7,2002' cue •• Mother Nature helped out by providing a beautiful and very warm summer day. With bright, sunny skies, temperatures in the low 90s, and lots of humidity, racers had to remember to stay hydrated to be competitive. Chris Hunter of Flemington, New Jersey, had a perfect day in both the 125cc and 250cc Open A classes; wining all four motos. Hunter also rode to a 5-3 score in the superfast Collegeboy class to earn second overall. Gene "Sonny" Nighman earned the runnerup spot on the 250cc Open A podium with his n • _ so Hurricane Hills Sports Center: "Sonny" Nighman (90) nails the holeshot in the second 250cc Open A moto at the Independence Day Race in Clifford, Pennsylvania, with Erick Burkholder (875), Chris Hunter (505), Dave Nyzlo (781) and Scoll Rockwell (770) in tow. Hunter won both the 125cc and 25OCclOpen A classes overall. 3-2 tally, while Brandon Kuhn rounded out the podium with his 2-3 rides. Honda thumper pilot Scott Rockwell got his CRF to the front of the pack and the early lead in the first 250cc Open A moto. In tow were Erik Burkholder, Hunter, Kuhn and Dave Nyzio. Rockwell remained in the point position after 2 112 laps but was starting to feel pressure from Hunter, who passed Burkholder to take second and set his sights on the leader. Kuhn was still fourth, and Nighman was now up to fifth. Hunter quickly caught and passed Rockwell for the lead just prior to the tabletop near the start area and quickly put some distance between himself and Rockwell. Meanwhile, Kuhn was also on the move, passing Burk· holder to take third. Before the end of lap three, Burkholder found himself relegated to fifth by Nighman. Hunter was still out front and pulling away when Kuhn passed Rockwell to claim second. Rockwell dropped to third. Nighman and Burkholder were still fourth and fifth, respectively. Hunter won the first moto with a sevensecond advantage. Rounding out the top five were Kuhn, Nighman, Rockwell and Jamie Robinson. Nighman got his Kawasaki to the front of the pack in the second moto but was forced to the outside and had nowhere to go but off the track in the following corner, which allowed Hunter to take the lead. Trailing him were Rockwell, Nyzio, Nighman and Kuhn. Hunter quickly pulled away and had a 5 1/2-second lead after only 2 1/2 laps. Rockwell was holding on to second, but it would just be a matter of time before he would feel pressure from Nighman, who had just passed Nyzio for third. Kuhn was still fifth. The top three were unchanged at the start of lap three of seven. Kuhn passed Nyzio by doing the finish-line triple while Nyzio only doubled, costing him fourth place. Near the end of lap three, Nighman passed Rockwell for second. Then Kuhn caught and passed Rockwell to take third. Hunter won the second moto with a six-second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Nighman, Kuhn, Rockwell and Robinson. Burkholder nailed the holeshot and took the early lead in the first Over 25 A moto. Trailing rum were Tim Henry, Kevin Krueger, Adon Graves and Darryl Smith. Burkholder was flying and had a six-second lead by lap three. Krueger was now up to second, dropping Henry to third, while Graves and Smith held fourth and fifth. Burkholder won the first moto easily with a 10-second lead. In tow were Krueger, Smith, Graves and Henry. Burkholder got another excellent start in the second moto and led all the way to the checkered flag, never being challenged. Trailing Burkholder off the start were Josh Hanley, Henry, Graves and Smith. By the time the leaders exited the downhill rhythm section. the top five were Burkholder, Henry, Graves, Smith and Hanley. By lap three, Burkholder's lead was already five seconds. Graves was now up to second, dropping Henry to third. Smith and Hanley were still fourth and fifth. Burkholder doubled his lead to 10 seconds by lap four. Smith caught and passed Graves just before the end of the previous lap to take second. Henry was fourth and Hanley held fifth. Burkholder added another second to his lead on the last lap for another easy win. Rounding out the top five were Smith. Graves, Henry and Hanley. Burkholder's perfect I-I rides earned him the top tier of the Over 25 A podium. Runner-up honors went to Smith, via his 3-2 tally. Graves rounded out the podium with his 4-3 score.
