By LARRY WITMER BUCHANAN, MI, JULY 6 Brett Wagner took the overall win in the highly competitive 85cc (12-15) division on his Maple City Kawasaki/MSR/Concept Haulers/ Pro Circuit KX. It didn't come easily, as Shane Sewell, Chris Spitale and Pat Boyle all took their best shots at besting Wagner's 1-2 moto tally. Red Bud was a very festive place. The Fourth of July fireworks put on by the staff went nonstop for 45 minutes during a break in the night's racing action. One of the highlights was the Red Bud logo lit up on the ground with fireworks. This got the crowd chanting "Red Budl" The night track was dialed in for the more than 500 Amateur racers on hand. The top finishers in each of the classes received some great products. Dunlop Tires provided each class winner with a tire of their choice. Scott Goggles were a big part of the payouts. Red Bud's night-track area was a vendor's paradise. The Moto T event shirts rig was backed up where the Amateur event entrance usually is. The SoBe drink guys were all decked out, serving the official drink of the Chevy Truck Nationals. Klotz Lubricants had a support vehicle stocked with plenty of product. FMF had its huge support rig stocked to the rafters, with Georgia laPorte handling the sales and "Tall Paul" handling the installation and technical assistance. Mark from Alpinestars had the full lineup of product laid out at his bcoth. Racer X was there with the "Red Bud '02" stickers. The Super Store had plenty of No Fear, Fox and Thor equipment. The Scott USA rig had the latest in sunglasses and gear bags. Frese Discounts had 600 pairs of DC shoes on display. The opening Senior Mini moto featured a full gate of 12- to 15-year-old speedsters ready to challenge the supercross-style night track. Shane Sewell launched his Suzuki into the lead, with CTS's Chris Spitale second, Wagner third and Pat Boyle fourth. Sewell and Spitale both slid out in the second corner, giving the lead to Wagner. Sewell remounted dead last but put on a charge that eventually landed him fourth. Spitale got up quicker after his brief encounter with the Red Bud clay to card a third. Up front, it was all Wagner, with Boyle keeping tabs on him. Ryan Rogerson from U1inois came in fifth on his Kawasaki. Sewell was again quickest off the line in moto two, but he kept it up throughout the moto to card the win uncontested. Wagner kept Sewell in sight but never seriously challenged the leader. There was a two rider duel between Spitale and Boyle for the third spot. Spitale tried to cut under Boyle after the finish line at the completion of the first lap, but the two riders collided and both went down. This gave Rogerson complete control of third. Both Spitale and Boyle got right back up, and they charged back to fourth and fifth at the checkers. Wagner knew he had the overall in the bag and rode smart to take the win. "I saw both Sewell and Spitale go down in the second corner in the first moto," Wagner recounted. "I rode around them and rode my own race. Second mota, I had to work for the overall win.
