Michael Wendrlcks International Old-Timers Motocross Series Round 7: Agassiz Track An Admirable Perry in Agassiz had ideas of his own about that and rocketed by Perry in the rhythm section and began to extend his lead. A couple of laps went by before Perry closed in on Chase, and the two fiew over the big tabletop side by side. Another inside move by Perry put him in the lead again, and he remained unchallenged to the end. Matos three and four were soUd wins for Perry, but by moto five the other Senior Masters decided that Perry had won enough for the day. Chase nailed the holeshot, with Perry showing him a front fender in the corners. When they entered the long (and I mean long) straightaway, Chase was still in the lead, but Perry found a smoother line and they arrived at the bermed right·hander dead even. Somehow, Chase tumbled over the bars and Perry made it through, now with the lead. Garry Roestel from Washington made a pass on Perry for the lead with oniy a couple of laps remaining. The two masters swapped leads several times in a duel that was exciting to watch before Perry decided enough was enough and motored in for the fifth win of his perfect weekend. Perry is looking good regarding the defense of that number-one plate. Tony Armada and Gene "Higgi" Higginbotham continued their battle for the 2002 championship in the Over 70 Expert class. Armada jumped into the lead early in mota one but handed the win to Higgi with a fall in a slippery comer. The remaining mota wins for both days were easily Armada's. His MC Pipes CR250 was beautifully tuned and the suspension "spot on" for the northern tracks. Higgi By GENE HIGGINBOTHAM AGASSIZ, BC, CANADA, JULY 6-7 Round seven of the 12·round International Old·Timers Motocross Series was held at the newly redesigned and fantastic track in Agassiz, British Coiumbia, which is about a hundred "klicks" east of Vancouver and just north of the United States border. Most of the 12 chapters were represented, which involved traveling from as far north as Edmonton, Alberta, and from as far south as the Los Angeles area. The two-day, five·moto event was hosted by BC chapter president Don Tocher and event coordinator Lawrence St. Pierre and his lovely Wife, Joan. The BC chapter's hospitality was awesome, including a catered dinner on Saturday night, setting (hopefully) a standard for the rest of the chap· ters. (We will not mention mosquitoes as big as crows, however.) Oregon's Mike Perry took advantage of the perfect weather to extend his points lead in the Senior Master class with a perfect five for five mote wins. Perry, carrying the number·one plate for his championship in the class for the years 2000 and 200], had to work hard for the wins. Riding his Fiy/Terry's Cycle Center Suzuki, Perry hooked up for the holeshot in mota one, only to lose the lead almost immediately to British Columbia's Gary Hawrys. An inside move a few corners later put Perry back in the lead for good. In the second moto, Perry once again had the lead, but Washington rider Gary Chase 72 AUGUST 7. 2002' cue I e n e _ s felt that the stock suspension in his heavier DR-Z400 did not make for comfortable racing at the pace Armada set. "Discretion is the better part of valor," he said. The two will have ample opportunity to psych each other out during the next week. They are remaining on the road with other Over 70 riders Johnny Hall and Don McKenzie until the next round. Five more rounds remain in the series. SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 7 Glen Helen Raceway regular Terry Fowler finally broke loose and won two classes at the fourth and penultimate round of the Yamaha Dealers Series, but he had to share some of the spotlight, as six other riders clinched class championships and another earned at least a tie for the number-one spot and another halfdozen remain undefeated. Fowler, who won the 250cc Pro and Junior Vet Expert classes six weeks ago, got his second double win of the series when he topped the 250cc Pro and Vet Expert classes at this outing. He might have won a third class had he not dropped out of the Junior Vet Expert contest at the last moment, leaVing that event to be captured by Willy Musgrave, who clinched his class championship with the victory. Two Sportsmen riders also recorded double victories as the series begins to wind down. Jay Sapp kept his perfect streak alive in the Four·Stroke Beginner class and added a win in the Vet Novice class for the first time in four outings. Making his first appearance in the series a success was Robert Memoli, beating the 80cc (14-]6) and 80cc Supermini fieids. Sean O'Connor scored his first Pro win of the series, the 125cc Pro, and not only was it the first time a Yamaha had won the class in four rounds, it also clinched the title for him. Others having big-enough leads in the point standings to shut out the rest of the opposition in the race for the top spot included Mini riders Michael Garland, riding a KTM in the Pee Wee Stock (4-6) class, and Jeremy McCool, riding a KTM in the Pee Wee Stock (7-8) class. Both of them are also toting perfect scores of 100 points. four-Stroke Yamaha riders Ben Ramsaran and Brian Bums clinched the Intermediate and Novice titles, respectively, even though one race remains. A seventh rider, Donnie Kearney, has almost wrapped up a title as well, with a 25· point lead in the 80cc (4-]]) class, which cinches at least a tie. The remaining three riders with ]OO-point efforts but who have still not clinched titles are Yamaha-mounted Ron Turner, in the Senior Expert class; Yamaha rider Elizabeth Bash, in Agassiz Track: Mike Perry enjoyed a perfect weekend of five mota wins in Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada, site of round seven of the International Old-Timers Motocross Series.
