DustIn Pulley AMA Mid-South Championship Summer Camp Series Round 4: Three Creeks Station Carter - Cruising the .....,id-South Creeks By DEBBIE AllEN GREENWILLE, KY, JUNE 30 SERA's fastest summer rider, Landon Carter, paid the Mid-South Summer Camp Series another visit. This time, he used the lessons he had learned from the last race and applied them to win this race. He learned quickly to be on the lookout for Mid-South's fastest summer rider, Gary Hendricks. At the third round, Hendri~ks grabbed the overall right out from under him because of adjusted time. Carter wasn't going to let that happen again, so he cruised Three Creeks, riding a Honda into first place in the 250cc/Open A class and first place overall. "There was no problem with adjusting time here," said Carter. "We started on the same line, and Gary and I rode together pretty much the whole time. I thought he was gone for a while, and I wasn't really riding well until I saw him down. I got by him, and I picked up my pace. But I thought he had checked out." Dirt Bike Supply/Dirt Tech-backed Carter was in third place off the start, and he passed Lance Smith in the first creek bed. He then set his eyes on Hendricks, and the two stuck together for the next five laps, swapping the lead, and were never more than 15 seconds apart at the score tent. Carter took the lead dUring the second lap and once again on the final lap. "We battled it out. and we were all over," said IMS/Performance Cycle/Pro Action of Kentucky-supported Hendricks. "More or less, whoever got the better line was out front. DurIng my third lap, I crashed twice and picked the wrong line in a mudhole. Then I thought the fourth lap was my last, so I gave it every· thing I had. Eight miles later, when I found out that I had to go one more lap, I just gave out." Hendricks claimed the fastest lap time of 16:32 and was in the lead for three of the five laps raced. He fjnished the race in second place in the 250cc/Open A class and second overall. Carter won the race with a 10-second lead. "I had a fun ride," said Carter. "I knew Gary thought we were only going to go four laps. He seemed too happy when I let him pass me on the fourth lap just before the score tent. I knew he was tired, but he stayed right up there with me for the last lap. I would really like to ride more of the Mid·South's races this summer. This one was fast and slick, with plenty of roots - just how I like it." Jason Wofford has been riding his KTM in third place the whole season. This day wasn't any different. He got his third-place position soon after the second·mile marker and stayed consistent. "I couldn't do anything with them {Carter or Hendricksl," Wofford said. "They checked out, but it was a nice track - no wrecks. Nice!" Lance Smith and Timmy P'Pool finished out the top five in overall. Riding in the 250cc/Open A class, Smith got the holeshot and came in fourth, while P'Pool finished in fifth. "I got that holeshot down, " said Smith. "I think this is going on my 11 th holeshot throughout this winter and summer series. But afterward is a different story. Instead of putting it together, I just rode this race from one tum to the next and then to the next. On the last lap, I tried real hard to catch back up, but after today, I am worn out. I got beat by someone my age. He rides good for his mld-30s." Harvey Whitaker and Derek Bratcher mastered the holeshots in their classes. Team Green Kawasaki's Harvey Whitaker got the holeshot in Four-Stroke NB and never looked back. He rode fast and smooth for all five laps and passed all of the riders in the 200cc A class, heading up first place in his class and placing sixth overall. Mike Monroe, Robert Lich, Roger Little and Kendall Tuck filled out the top five in their class. In the 200cc A class, a KTM battle commenced between the top four riders. Off the start, Bratcher led Taylor Reynolds and Clay Hedgepath into the creek bed. After a bad start, Jeremy Ketchum entered the battle shortly thereafter, and they freight-trained for the next four laps. Bratcher won, followed by Reynolds, Ketchum, and Hedgepath. Although the weather was very hot, the riders could not h~ve asked for better riding conditions. The Emmett Cox track consisted of both new and used trails, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Several riders did mention one challenging mudhole, and they learned too late which line was better. Three Creeks Station Greenville. Competition Riders Association Pro Invitational Ohio International Raceway Top Ohio Pros Invade OIR By ROB PETRAS RAVENNA, OH, JUNE 30 Some of the state's best riders showed up at Ohio International Raceway to battle for the $3000 Pro purse provided by Kames Sports, Wiseco, Pro Action, EBC Brakes, and Hand Racing Promotions. In the first Heavyweight Pro mota, Bo Bowman grabbed the lead on the Street Track & Trail/Pro Action/Bonz-Eye Engines/Scott /PJ1 Honda, followed by GNCC racer Jimmy Jarrett, on a Funmart Cycles/Renthal/M2R/ Answer/Klou Yamaha. Third was Kawasaki jockey Tyson Lighett in his first Pro race. As the pack completed the first lap, the top three remained the same, with a fierce battle being waged over fourth between Husqvarna rider Mike Katin and District 11 's Steve Andrich, aboard a Yamaha. Pushing hard toward the front after a terrible start was Vince Kamow, on a Decker Cycles/FMF/Works Connection/North Coast Suspension KTM SX250. The Katin-Andrich battle moved into third, with Kamow in fifth. Suzuki·mounted Thomas Kelley started outside the top 20 but was up to eighth by halfway. Andrich, on a Rick's Construction/Valley Yamaha/Amette/Dunlop/Axo YZ426F, overtook Katin for third, while Jarrett took over the lead from Bowman. Now Bowman and Andrich were going at it hard for second. At the flag, it was Jarrett with a three-second lead over Andrich, followed by Bowman, Katin and Kamow. After a spill, Kelley finished 10th. As mota two left the line, Kamow was out front and on the gas! Behind him were Katin and Andrich, again battling for the runner-up spot, followed by Jarrett and Bowman. Kelley started 10th but was carving through the pack again. Andrich quickly passed Katin for second and focused on Karnow for the lead, but as he closed in, he clipped a tire over some rolling jumps and went down hard; he did not finish. Jarrett, who was holding down third, tumbled out of the top 10. At halfway, it was Kamow, Katin and Bow- cue I • man leading, with Kelley still pushing hard in fourth. When the checkers came out, Kamow took the win and a surprising overall. Follow· ing him across the line were Katin, Kelley, Bowman, Jamie Brockman on a Fly Racing Honda, and Jarrett. When the gate dropped for the first lightweight moto. it was Andrich out front on a YZ250F. Karnow was on him tight, and the two pulled out a five-second lead over Katin, on a Gateway Cycles/Cometic/GS3/Pro Circuit Husqvarna, and Kelley, on the Fly/ BWR/So Cal/No Toil/Smith RM125. Bowman and Brockman were also in the hunt. Kamow passed for the lead several times but couldn't make it stick. Andrich took the win, with Kamow, Katin, Kelley and Jarrett in tow. Honda rider Chris Miller nailed the holeshot for mota two but went down hard with Suzuki rider Eric Nepodal on a high-speed section of the course. Both riders were okay, but their day was over. Kelley and Andrich took over the point, and both riders set a blistering pace, fighting neck and neck for the lead. Bowman, Karnow and Brockman were tearing up the track just behind them. Kelley opened up a small gap out front but made a small mistake, sliding out in an off-camber corner. As he quickly remounted. Andrich came charging through, clipping Kelley's front tire, sending the RM rider to the ground a second time. At the finish, it was Andrich taking the win and the overall, followed by Bowman, Karnow, Brockman and Jarrett. Sixth went to a dejected Kelley. The 125cc and 250cc B classes featured some excellent racing between Suzuki jockey David Kilgore and Team Green Kawasaki jockey Matt Barnes. Kilgore took the 125cc win, followed by Barnes and Yamaha-mounted Tom Poling. However, Barnes took the 250cc victory, with Kilgore second and Yamaha pilot Kevin Spence third.
