AMP Top Gun Summer-X Series Round 3: Los Banos Fairgrounds Pestana Goes Back to Back at Los Banos By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS Log Road Motocross: Matt Crown (45) and Nick Wey (26) duke it out early in the Log Road Challenge race at the inaugural Great Lakes Championships in Coldwater, Michigan. Great lake Championships Day One: Log Road Motocross Wey, Wagner Whip 'em By BART NEWMAN COLDWATER, MI, JUNE 29 Fast guys, big money and great racing was the order of the day at Day One of the inaugural Great Lakes Championships. Log Road Motocross welcomed nearly 470 riders. With an open practice on Friday. the racers had the track dialed in come race day. National number 26, Nick Wey, made his short trek from DeWitt, Michigan, payoff by taking wins in the $2000 Great Lakes Challenge race (sponsored by Bloom Roofing, MCR Suspension and Championship Powersports). which pitted top riders from all over the Midwest head to head in a 20-minute-plus-two-lap moto. The bigname Pros weren't the only riders taking advantage of the available cash, either, as the Log Road crew put together a Mini Log Road Challenge as well. Brett Wagner took the lion's share of the gold on Saturday, topping a very talented Mini field. Some of the top Mini riders in the country lined up for the Nevins Motorsports Mini Challenge race. As the gate dropped and the pack headed for tum one, Maple City Cycle/Concept Haulers/MSR/Scott-sponsored Wagner got out front, being pushed by Michael Chapman, Kristopher Miller, Phillip Harris and Greg Durivage. Chapman made his move out of sight of the crowd out in the tight switchback section to take over first, but Wagner wasn't willing to ride in second and moved back into first in the fast sweeper after the McCarthy triples. Wagner put his head down and went to work, slowly but surely opening up a lead on the field that he would not relinquish. The race for second was heating up, as Durivage was on the gas and had pushed his Championship Powersports Honda past Harris and Miller as the race progressed, and set his sights on Chapman. Durivage didn't see Shane Sewell coming until it was too late, as Sewell joined both Wagner and Chapman in conquering the 90-foot downhill tripie to make the pass into third. With the white flag out, Wagner was out front with a more-than-10second lead, and the real race was for second, as Chapman, Sewell and Durivage were in a fight to the finish, slicing through the backmarkers. In the end, it was Wagner with the win, a smart-riding Chapman locking up second, and Sewell using his high-flying style to hoid off Durivage, who finished fourth. The big boys took to the Log Road course next. Tommy Kirk put his CRF450R out front, with Derek Rose, Wey, Matt Crown and Brad Smith giving chase. Kirk's lead was short- 60 AUGUST 7. 2002· cue I • lived, as he went backwards in a hurry, losing four positions in the tum before Log Road's McCarthy triple. Rose launched his MCR/Fast Times/Hi-Tech Horsepower CRF450R over the triple to take the lead, with Wey, Crown and Smith all looking for a way around the killer roost off of Rose's rear tire. Rose was riding well, but Wey looked like a cat staiking a mouse, just waiting for the right time and place to pounce. That place was at the end of the long straight before the finish-line area; Wey put his Moto-XXX/DGY/Smith/Sidi/ O'Neal-sponsored YZ250 on the inside of Rose, pushed him to the outside rut, and rode away in first place. Once out front, Wey rode away from the pack to take the win by some 18 seconds by race's end. Rose held on to second with time to spare, while a 35-yearsyoung Crown fought it out with Brad Lowe Suspension/Grace Performance/Nevins Motorsports-sponsored Smith aU moto long over the last podium spot. Smith made the pass on Crown with three laps to go when the new, tricky black-dirt section of the track pulled Crown off the track, opening up an opportunity for Smith to lock up third. Crown recovered in fourth but had his hands full to the end with Dustin Pulley, who was charging hard to round out the top five. Wey is a regular on the Pro tour, and the likable rider has been working hard to get himself back into race shape (after starting off the AMA Chevy Truck Nationals on the disabled list with a bum knee), competing on this day in both the 250cc A class and the Log Road Challenge race. "It's great to be back on a bike, competing again," Wey declared. "The Log Road crew did a great job today. It hasn't rained here in weeks, and the track was dust-free and in great shape."
