Pacific Racing Organization Northwest National Summer Series Rounds 1-2: Richland ORV Park versteeg Pushes the Pros in the Sand By lEE lIvESEY RICHLAND, WA, JUNE 29-30 Hotshoe Intermediate rider Kyle "Vertical" Versteeg posted a first in every moto he entered Saturday, with the exception of the second 125cc Intermediate moto, when mechanical problems forced him to DNF. Versteeg has picked up some intensity since finishing just off the pace at the Washougal Loretta Lynn's Qualifier. Verstee9 whimpered all day about riding in the deep sand, but it didn't seem to bother him once the gate dropped. Versteeg did the same on Sunday, only having trouble posting a first in the 125cc Intennediate class. An interstate group of riders came from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and yes, Alaska to take part in the two-day sandand-sun fest. Jenny Krick posted some fast lap times in the Women's Sportsman division but walked away from one of the most spectacular endos of all times. Krick cleared a 60-foot tabletop on the back side and overshot the landing by 15 feet, landing front wheel low. Krick went bike-over-teakettle and then came to an abrupt stop. After a "how many fingers" check by the crack DeVol paramedics, Krick was able to ride off the track; she was later diagnosed with a broken collarbone and a punctured lung. Michelle Nielsen also took a tumble on Saturday but was back on Sunday with a cast on, cheering for Sean "Sparky" Sparkman. Alaska's Jerry Lymburner showed his amazing corner speed in the tiddler Pro class, finishing well ahead of the rest of the field. Riding a mostly stock YZ 125, Lymburner showed that skill can triumph over technology. (Lymburner had his box van, four race bikes, and all his toots stolen while at a Canadian National race.) Lymburner did it again Sunday, winning both 125cc Pro motos. The other two podium spots went to Brandon Thomas and Royce DeVol. Saturday's Pro Unlimited class was led by Thomas, who had his CRF450R open wide and was untouchable, and his only challenges were from Lymburner (and the cyclone fence in a big sweeper). On Sunday, 250cc Pros Thomas, Kyle Coen, Sparkman, Ryan Ennis and Travis Gage all went at it. Thomas had the red bike out in front from the holeshot on, with Coen and Sparky going at it for second and third. Sparky was faster in the first moto, beating Coen through the turns with that great carving style. Coen got even in the second moto for second place overall. Ennis was fourth, while Gage did not start moto two. Sparkman looks like he's getting his form back after a stint with the Cannondales. He seems a lot more comfortable with the YZ four-strokers. There's no mistaking Sparky's signature thumper panic-rev when it looks like he's coming up short. The 250cc Juniors look like a good crop this year. On Saturday, Shawn Wilson, Chris Delair, Shane Harwood, Dustin Sipes, Ron Marshall, Brandon Bray and Keith Goodrich all went head to head, with Wilson, Delair and Harwood taking the medals home. A whole slew of racers made the gate in the 125cc "grip 'n' rip" Beginner class. What these kids lack in skills, they more than make up for in testosterone. Snohomish's Kevin Steere is this week's proud owner of the "Worst-to-first" award for going 13th in moto one and third in mota two on Sunday. Vance "Rocket Man" Davis made his BOcc debut, placing 12th in Sunday's first moto. A fall at the finish line made him a DNS for moto two, but Rocket Man will retum. The 60cc Junior class featured some great racing. On Saturday, Damien Walton, Tanner Mort and Rook "The Rock" Jewell were all bangin' bars through the rhythm section. Walton, Cameron Jungers and Cole Scott went one-twa-three in both matos, mixing it up in the rhythm section on Sunday. Walton, Jungers and Scott also went one-twa-three in Sunday's 60cc Open contest. Andrew and Karen Denham spent their 19th wedding anniversary in the Skagit Powersports trailer. (Kind of brings a whole new meaning to "for better or worse.") Skagit awarded gift certificates to holeshot artists in selected classes on both days. Cycle News is a welcome sponsor to PRO events. Diamond Chains gave away more than S1200 in chains to riders. That sand eats chains, doesn't it? Pacific Racing Organization puts on quality events that are fun for all. These folks work some long hours, making sure everything's ready to go. DeVol's Multi-line Design Crew had the track new and fresh, and Kenny and the water truck kept the sand pretty well in check and cooled off some of the water girls as well.
