Andrews nabbed the holeshot, followed closely by the rest of the field. Andrews quickly established a cushion between himself and Woodford, who had his hands full with Hondamounted Doug Blackwell and Yamaha-mounted Barry Hawk as the two pressured him for second. As the race for second wore on, Andrews was able to break away from the battling trio. With lap times ranging between 20 and 21 minutes, all of the top contenders came in for gas on the fourth lap. By this time, Andrews had already established a lead of more than a minute, and he would continue to distance himself from the field all the way to the checkered flag. Woodford attempted to make a run at his number-one Kawasaki teammate, but he admittedly fell victim to the heat. "I gave it everything I had after the pit stop," Woodford said. "My legs and stomach started to cramp up; it was all I could do to hang in there to the finish." F&S Suzuki's Bersano made a laterace charge around both Hawk and Blackwell, who were both visibly exhausted due to the incredibly hot conditions. Hawk called it quits prior to completing his sixth lap, and Blackwell steadily fell off the pace, eventually dropping back to eighth overall. The race for fourth was a tight one, with Nor-Cal Motorsports' Eric Ducray putting in a strong effort to hold off KTM-mounted Brian Garrahan late in the race. Ducray made his long trip from Califomia a successful one by earning fourth overall, and he was happy that he made the trip to Michigan for the race. "I raced this one a couple years ago, and I remembered how much fun it was, so I decided to make the trip," Ducray said. "I really liked the motocross track - the doubles and tabletops were a lot of fun. It was also nice to race in some tight woods again." After a dominating win at the previous round, Garrahan was forced to Points leader Brian Ga..... han (31 batUed with Hawk (6) earty In the race. Hawk eventually dropped out due to heat exhaustion, while Ga.....han held on for fifth. settle for fifth, finishing only 14 seconds behind Ducray. With Andrews taking the win, Garrahan saw his points lead dwindle dramatically. Unlike the GNCC series, the AM-Pro riders are allowed to throwaway two races, which will keep things interesting as the series comes to a close. With the upcoming races taking place on the East Coast, pit pundits seem to think that Garrahan may have a difficult time keeping the woodssavvy Andrews from earning a second consecutive National Hare Scrambles Championship. BRIEFLY••• Weird and uncomfortable weather conditions played a large role in the outcome of the race at the Dutch Sport Park facility. There were scattered showers throughout the area. even getting as close as a couple of miles from the track. but it never rained a drop on the course. All of the competitors that were arriving at the track Sunday morning had rain-soaked vehicles, only to find it sunny at the track. With the drought that this area of Michigan has gone through lately. the track could have benefited greatly from the passing storms. Blair Bersano rebounded well from a couple of Injuries to round out the podium In Michigan. The other weather-related factor was the heat. Wrth actual temperatures in the mid-90s. com· bined with the terrible amount of humidity, the heat index was over 100 degrees for the day. Hydration and conditioning were key factors in surviving Sunday's three-hour event The sponsors that support the Dutch Sport Park facility put together some excellent awards for the competitors, with the top three places earning some beautiful trophies. along with some substantial cash. Kawasaki's Fred Andrews earned $1000 for first place. while hiS teammate Chuck Woodford made $600 for second. and F&S Suzuki's Blair Bersano took home $400 for third. Along with the heat and dust. the challenging track took ItS tali on some of the riders. There were some very technical. off-camber ravine sections. with 30- to 40-foot drop-offs. Once a bike went off the trail in one of these sections. it usualiy signaled the end of the rider's day. This event was combined with the AMA District 14 Hare Scrembles Series. with 155 riders entered in the Sunday program. On Saturday. the crew at the Dutch Sport Park track held a two-hour event. which took place on a shortened version of the Sunday course. Chuck Woodford and Fred Andrews decided to get some practice in during the Heavy Team event and easily won it.
