Racer X Vet National
By GEORGE AND KAREN HODKINSON
MILLVILLE, MN, JUNE 22
The Racer X Vet National Series made a stop
for the first time ever at Spring Creek MX
Park, with the closest previous National being
about four hours away. near Aztalan, Wisconsin. The series does have Aztalan on its
schedule again this year, but Spring Creek
joined the list of Vet National tracks for 2002,
and it was without a shadow of a doubt

extremely fun!
Participants from all over the Midwest

made the roster, and full or nearly full gates
were the norm of the day. A total of 12 classes
and just under 300 entrants showed up for the
event. Heavy rains in the area prevented practice on Friday. but Saturday dawned clear and
hot and humid. The track held up excellently,
and all participants seemed happy with

Former professional MX regular Dennis
Hawthorne - who now resides in Janesville,
Wisconsin, and is a rep for Kawasaki - had the
track dialed in the Over 35 Expert class.
Despite some challenges by Spring Creek regulars such as Don Bonnickson, Jay Mercill
and even Jeff Sorenson, who would be at or
near the front of the class on the start on his
beastly CR500, Hawthorne took both mota
wins on his KX. Mercill claimed second overall
with a 3-2 score, RM250 rider Tim Bemloehr
took third overall via 4-3 finishes, and Don
Bonnickson placed fourth with a 2-5 score.
Boden Soderbach and Sorenson claimed fifth
and sixth overall, showing there was a homefield advantage, as five of the top six were
from Minnesota.
YZ250 rider Brent Stevenson of Mankato,
Minnesota, took the overall win in the Over 30
Expert class with perfect 1-1 score.
Hawthorne was a few seconds behind in both
motos on his KX, finishing solidly in second.
Mercill took third overall via a 5-3 score, beating Craig Schwarz's consistent 4-4 score. Jeff
Hill of DeKalb, Illinois, was fifth overall with a
3-5 tally on a TUF KX250.
Cory Keeney claimed the Over 25 Expert
victory by winning both motos on his Pro
Action/Cannon Power RM250, ahead of Over
30 Expert winner Stevenson, who tallied a 2-2
for second overall. Pat Donaho took third
overall on a GPS Racing/Premier Building and
Contracting CRF450R, riding to 3-3 finishes.
Todd Fletcher of Renner, South Dakota, was
fourth with a 4-5 score. Rick Amatuzio of
Duluth, Minnesota, rounded out the top five
with a 6-4 score.
