The Fifth Annual "Last" Bass Lake 250 Dual Sport Ride The Bass Lake Area Hey, That's Great Bass! become a feature of the trail in the recent By RON SOBCHIK past. Sunday's lunch stop is at a quaint little OAKHURST, CA, JUNE 29-30, 2002 On June 29-30, Califomia Trail Rides, with the Orange County Dualies. staged their annual dual-sport ride near Yosemite National Park. This two-day event is rapidly becoming one of the premier events on the California dual-sport circuit, thanks in no small part to the skills of Larry Langley and his local support network. For two days, sleepy little Oakhurst comes alive with the sounds of dual-sport motorcycles and jingling cash registers. The local economy enthusiastically welcomes motor~ cycles and the business they bring. The event was based out of the Elks Club, and these people have shown themselves to be gracious hosts. They put on a Friday night feed, and this year's repast was an all-you-can-eat spaghetti feast, with salad and garlic bread and dessert. Saturday's ride had a 33-foot-long roll chart, suggesting a long ride. Amazingly, more than 200 people had preregistered, compared to a total of 130 the year before. I resolved to get a very early start, as there would surely be dust and traffic jams in the more-technical sections of the ride. As we enjoyed our dinner, the laughter and friendly banter made us feel that we were at a big family gathering rather than an organized event. We chatted as we taped our charts together and put them in the holders, but we soon retired, wanting to start early the next morning to avoid the crowd. Soon my alarm was bUZZing, and I donned my riding gear in anticipation of a fun but challenging ride. Saturday's ride was a clockwise loop to the northeast by Neider Grove, Sperkerman Mountain, Fresno Dome, Iron Mountain, through Jackass Meadow, and down to the Mammoth Pools Store for lunch. Lunch was a tri-tip sandwich and drink, which was excelient. Making quick work of gas and lunch, we left before the mob descended. Some of the riders came in complaining about dust and people strewn all over the first uphill, and we were giad that we had decided to hit the trail early. The trail climbed toward Minarets Overlook, where you could survey the whole area. Below us was Mammoth Pools Reservoir; to the east was the Ansel Adams Wilderness. The scenery got more breathtaking as the trail led to Whisky Creek, with one of the most scenic waterfalls in the Sierras. We stopped and watched people play in the pool at the base of the falls. From there, the trail dropped steeply into the Bass Lake valley, where we opted to bail out and head back to camp, having compieted some 130 miles. Saturday's dinner was barbeque, corn on the cob, baked beans, and apple cobbler. The Elks managed to seat all 252 riders and their families, and still had food left over for sec- onds. A raffle was held after dinner, with prizes donated by sponsors. It was a nice way to finish off a magnificent first day's ride. We wan- dered off to bed in anticipation of another challenging ride tomorrow. Sunday's ride took us In a different direc- tion, circling counterclockwise to the northwest, venturing right up to the Yosemite National Park boundary. Larry's local support crew spent weeks scouting out new singletrack, and seamlessly blended those trails with our favorite existing routes. There were water crossings, but nobody managed to drown out their motorcycle, although a few of us had sqUishy boots. My favorite trail is a long single-track that hugs the mountainside, keeping the riders on their toes and testing reflexes dulled by a day and a half of riding. The trail loops around a Volkswagen-sized rock that appears to have 88 JULv31.2002· cue I • '50s diner offering a choice of lunch items (burgers, salads, and cherry cokes). Although the mileage was roughly the same as Saturday's ride, we finished the course a little after noon. Grabbing a quick shower, we hit the road for the long trip home. With the early start and little traffic, we rolled into Fullerton at 7 p.m., leaving me plenty of time to unload the bike and the gear, and to clean up before sundown. East Bend Speedway: The 14-rider 80cc 0 class rockets off lhe start, led by Brandon Griffin (6) and Lance Joyce (80), In East Bend, North Carolina_ I know where I'll be this time next year. The Bass Lake 250 has become one of those "musts" on my calendar. Club Moto Northrop in the Groove BY RANDY HElM UVERMORE, CA, JUNE 14 The "Club" was jumping again for round three of the Mutant Motorsports Friday night series. Mike Northrop had his groove on, taking the wins in the always-competitive 125cc Intermediate class and the Dash For Cash. Northrop started the first moto strong with the holeshot, leading Mike Newnham, Gino Scolari and Arik Swan. Northrop set the pace while the others banged bars for second. Yamaha-mounted Scolari shadowed Newnham for a lap before getting by on lap two. Nick Davis, on a Suzuki in a sea of blue, was running fifth but moved up a spot when Swan pulled out. The top four remained the same to the finish, and at the checkers it was Northrop with a comfortable lead, Scolari second, Newnham third and Davis fourth. Moto two was another case of follow-theleader, who happened to be Northrop again. Northrop had the track dialed and pulled another great start. Davis was running second and Newnham third. Northrop crossed the line first. This time, Davis kept most of the blue bikes behind him and finished a solid second. Newnham finished third. Northrop (1-1) took the overall, Davis (4-2) was second, and Newnham (3-3) scored third. Chris Conley split motos wins with Justin Brooks to take the overall in the 250cc Intermediate class. Brooks had the start in moto one and kept his Honda out front until moto's end. Conley, on a Yamaha, finished second, ahead of KTM-mounted Brian Sperle. Conley led mota two from start to finish. Brooks rode strong to finish second, and Sperle again finished third. Conley (2-1) took the overall, Brooks (1-2) finished second, and Sperle (3-3) grabbed third. In the Vet Beginner classes, the regulars had the upper hand. In the Over 30 Beginner class, Honda rider Ireland Cannan took the overall. Second went to Kawasaki jockey Jeff This week's Mini Dash For Cash was won by Beau "Pay Me" Weigand. Northrop took home the money in the four-lap, big-bike Dash For Cash, which was shaping up to be a great race when Pro rider Kenny Heess went down in a tum while chasing down leader Northrop and got a front flat tire. Northrop then rode unchallenged to the win. Results 50 (O-6): I. James Sacher (KTM); 2. Robert Nalezny (Cob): 3. Wesley Casplilo (KTM). 50 (7·8): 1. Mark Brad!!!n (KTM): 2. Anthony Parks (Pol): 3.
