A field of riders just shy of 100 entries was greeted with a drastically altered Carlsbad Vintage course for the day's racing. Under the skilled hands of track builder John Taylor, the familiar Vintage track underwent major changes to several areas of the course, A host of CALVMX volunteers put in long hours in the days leading up to race day, watering and prepping the track. By race morning, several new turns and jumps had been added to the course, In the Sportsman 125cc Intermediate class, Blaty and fonner Baja 500 winner Gene Fetty resumed their longtime rivalry, Blaty, mounted on his lundapp-powered, Maicoframed machine, and Fetty, on his Husqvama, launched together at the start of the first moto. Blaty managed to break free of traffic exiting the first comer, while Fetty had to work his way around slower traffic. Entering the new sections of the track, Blaty stretched out his lead, For the remainder of the moto, Blaty maintained his smooth, fast pace on the dry and slippery course. Despite Fetty's best effort to close the gap, Blaty took the checkers first, As they lined up for the second moto, both veterans knew it would take a smooth riding style and a steady throttle hand to tackle the increasingly slick track conditions. When the rubber band snapped for the second moto, Blaty left no doubt he was ready for whatever the track might have waiting for him. His little lundap-Maico hybrid rocketed off the starting line, with Fetty in hot pursuit. On this day, however, it was all Blaty. He once again put in five flawless laps on the challenging course to earn the overall victory. The Vintage Sportsman 250cc Novice class featured some excellent racing. In a scene reminiscent of the late 1960s, the entire class was comprised solely of European-manufactured machines. At the start of the first moto, Maico-mounted Norman Himaka grabbed the holeshot, with Cl rider Rezende and fellow newcomer George Hughes, on a Husqvarna, close behind. Hughes passed Rezende midway through the second lap of the race and set his sights on Himaka. For the next three laps, Himaka and Hughes were never more than a bike length apart. Approaching the finish line atop the huge new tabletop jump, Hughes pinned the throttle and nipped Himaka for first place, with Rezende taking third. Uning up for their second moto, the anticipation of a repeat of the first race was in the air. Unfortunately for Hughes, his Husky "loaded up" just as the rubber band snapped for the start of the race; he could only watch helplessly as Himaka, Rezende and the rest of the pack roared away from his stricken Swedish machine, Himaka held a slight lead over Rezende for the first three laps. On lap four, Rezende found a way around Himaka at the far end of the track. Using a conservative riding style on the now bone-dry track, he increased his lead as they entered the final lap and held it to the finish, With a 3-1 score, Rezende took the overall honors, while Himaka collected a well-earned second place, One of the largest races was the combined Over 40 and Over 50 GP and Vintage contest. With all three skill levels represented, there was plenty of racing for everyone. In the Over 40 Vintage Intermediate division, the competition was between CZ pilot Dave Scourfield and Husqvarna rider Brian Backer. The flu-stricken Scourfield took command of the first moto entering the first tum. His rival Backer was caught in first-tum traffic and was forced to battle his way into position before he could mount a challenge against Scourfield, As the race progressed, Scourfield held on to his Mrrow lead while Backer maneuvered his way into an ever~closer sec- 84 JULv31,2002' cue' II! and place. Time ran out for Backer, who settled for second place, as ScoUlfield took the number-one spot. When the rubber band snapped for moto two, Backer took a commanding lead over Scourfield, The two battled with each other and the very dusty conditions, but by lap three Backer had managed to gain a 10-second advantage over Scourfield. Backer was able to maintain his lead throughout the rest of the moto. Backer garnered first place, with Scourfield hanging tough for second-place honors. Cartsbad Raceway Cartsbad, Califomia Results. Ponca City Qualifier Motocross Monster Mountain Motocross Parle Phenix Rising By STEVE A1'ID PEGGY CORLEE TALlASSEE. AL, JUNE 30 Yamaha-mounted Kyle Phenix, fresh from a successful campaign in the previous night's supercross bash at the Mountain, continued hjs winning ways on Sunday as action moved over to Monster Mountain's super outdoor track for part two of another great SX/MX doubleheader. At day's end, the youngster stood atop the podium in three classes. Impressive as well was Alabama old Pro Darryl Heisler, who backed up a win in the Over 30 class with a strong runner-up finish in the 250cc A class. Racing action was fast and furious in every class, thanks to the great track preparation by the Southern Dirt crew. Most of Sunday's riders competed in the Sat· urday night race as well, and many of the rivalries begun under the lights carried on Into the outdoor arena. The day's program began with the drop of the gate for the 125cc C class. Alabama's lack Rossetti grabbed the lead at the start, followed by Suzuki-mounted Jacob Capps and Georgia's James Wills, As Rossetti pulled out a slight lead, a battle broke out behind him as Phenix joined up with Capps and Wills. The trio went back and forth for a couple of laps and then Phenix made his move and passed both to take over second. Then Phenix set out after Rossetti. With a good lead on Phenix, Rossetti looked to have it in the bag, but he fell on the last lap, allowing Phenix to get close. Rossetti recovered in time to barely hold off Phenix and take the win. Phenix followed him across, and then came Capps, Yl-mounted Garrett West and Clinton Arnold rounded out the top five. Rossetti again got the holeshot in race two, ahead of Capps and Phenix. As Rossetti motored out front, Capps and Phenix fought tooth and nail, trading second place back and forth for several laps, with Phenix finally getting by and setting off after Rossetti. He caught Rossetti on the last lap and made the pass for the lead. Rossetti held on to finish a close second, and the pair finished a good distance ahead of Capps, in third, and West, in fourth, Florida's Jesse Jorgensen brought his Yl in fifth, In addition to his hard-fought overall victory in the C class, Phenix put on a dazzling display of riding skill all day. He, Capps, Rossetti and several others met again in the Schoolboy class, where a 2-2 finish placed Phenix on top of the podium again. Despite expending much energy in the aforementioned two classes, Phenix found enough to dominate the 250cc C class as well, sweeping both motos, n • vw 51: The 250cc AlB combined contest proved to be a battle between one of Texas' fmest, KTM-mounted Rowdy Flanagan, and one of Alabama's toughest, Yl rider Darryl Heisler. Heisler grabbed the holeshot, ahead of Flanagan; KX-mounted Danny Haynes, and B riders Kyle Hochstetler and Scott Fredrickson. Saturday night's Pro winner, Brian Young, got off the gate poorly and was circulating in about sixth place. Heisler held on to the lead for several laps despite challenges from Flanagan. Finally, the pressure got to be too much, and Heisler let the KTM rider by after a great battle, As the two A riders battled, a superfast Hochstetler, leading the B class, came up to join in. The three put on a great show, with Flanagan taking the top spot in the A class, ahead of Heisler and Haynes, and Hochstetler easily topping the B class, Young finished in fifth, Moto two saw Flanagan grab the lead right off, ahead of Young and Heisler, Young was determined to redeem himself in this moto and he passed Flanagan on the first lap. The two battled hard, but Flanagan had nothing for the Honda rider and settled for second. B rider Hochstetler followed Flanagan, and then came Heisler, Haynes and Davy Duprel!. Flanagan's 1-2 finishes gave him the A-class overall, and Hochstetler took home the B-c1ass gold, Monster Mountain Motocross Park Tallassee, Alabama Results: June 30, 2002 SO OIL-INJ: 1.
