Saddleback Race Park: Bob Anderson (46L) leads Pete Tapken (71 L) during the Open Pro heat race in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Tapken eventually made the pass and took the win. to take over second, while Dustin Johnson had also joined the fray. As Wagner put on a riding clinic, a five~rider battle for second waged on between Miles, Frey, Johnson, Devin Wenz and Nick Martin. Then John Morris passed Martin on the final lap to secure sixth. Wagner easily won the race, and Miles beat out a hard-charging Frey and Johnson for second. Wenz finished just behind Johnson in fifth. In the Open Pro main, veterans Bob Anderson and Pete Tapken waged a classic battle for nearly the entire race. Anderson had led nearly every lap in the heat race before giving it up to Tapken with two to go. Anderson was determined to reverse those results in the main, so he nailed the holeshot, in front of Scott Garaets, Tapken and Sheldon Wenz. Garaets held second for just a lap, and then Tapken showed him the quick way around a dry-slick track to take over the funner-up position. Garaets and Wenz battled it out for four more laps before Wenz motored past. Tapken slowly inched his way closer to Anderson. Near halfway, Tapken came alongside Anderson leaving the fourth corner; on the next lap, Tapken finally stole the lead. Anderson stayed close until the final few laps, just to keep his longtime friend honest. Tapken won, followed by Anderson, Wenz and Garaets. The Open Pro IT class turned out to be one of the best races of the night. Garaets pulled the holeshot, ahead of Troy Sauers, Nick Laddusaw and Michael Koch. Matt Hanson, Gerod Olivier and Jason Petree also joined the fight at the front within just a few turns. As the pack raced side by side, Garaets managed to get a couple of bikelengths ahead. Sauers ran second for several laps, while Koch, Laddusaw, Hanson and Petree battled for third. Koch and Laddusaw swapped back and forth as they began to reel in Sauers. By midway, Garaets' lead was four bikelengths, while Sauers was beginning to feel the heat from Koch, who had taken third from Laddusaw. A lap later, Koch took second from Sauers. Laddusaw reached Sauers' back tire as he put a little breathing distance on Han· son. Garaets took the win, followed by Koch. Sauers held off Laddusaw for third, and Hanson took fifth, over Petree. JUNE 22-23 Motocross racers invaded Delta, Utah, on the weekend of June 22 and 23, as the Utah Sport Riders Association converged at the fun-toride Bunkerhill Motocross Track to do battle. With well over 1000 entrants on hand. there was plenty of room for heroes and outstanding individual efforts. Over 3D/Over 25/250cc Pro rider Chad Wallwork was definitely in this category. Racing in the Over 30 Pro class, Wallwork showed the speed and talent that makes him a contender in the regular Pro classes as well. He burst to the front to lead Scott Neilson, Bo Sansalla and the rest of the Pros up the big start hill and through the right-hand straight that marks the start 01 the long Bunkerhill course. Sam Taylor and T.J. Montgomery were right behind the lead trio. Wallwork was ripping it up, but Nielson managed to keep in contact. SansaJla. Taylor and Montgomery were banging bars for third. Taylor crashed, dropping off the pace. Wallwork turned up the wick at the end to win race one rather easily. Nielson finished a solid second, as Sansalla led the rest of the troops home. Wallwork duplicated his first·moto heroics on the power-robbing start hill in moto two, as he once again had the clean air to race in. Montgomery and Sansalla were cracking helmets for second, while Nielson, apparently caught dozing on the starting line, was charging up through the ranks. Sansalla tipped over in the big bowl tum before the finish line, gifting Nielson with a position, but he earned the next one, powering past Montgomery on one of the course's big downhills. None of this mattered to Wallwork, who was sailing along with a respectable lead out in front. Wallwork carried on to win his second straight race and the overall crown in the Over 30 Pro class. Nielson's efforts netted him second place and second overall, besting Montgomery, Kelly Oldroyd and Taylor. The Napoleon of the 250cc Junior wars was Zac Humphries, defeating all opponents and fending off all challenges, but in the 125cc version, Justin Fraughton was the undisputed king. Orrin Wilcock hopped out in front of Humphries, Sion Benedict and the rest of the eighth-liter rocket ships on Sunday, as the day's biggest class exploded into action. Fraughton was slowly working his way through the crowded field. By midrace, he had first place, and the first race. Wilcock was the best of the rest. lt was Mike Harrison's turn to shine in moto two, as he led Wilcock and Fraughton when the gate dropped. Fraughton was quicker this time, taking the point before lap one was history. That was it, as Fraughton stormed home with the win, and the overall n e vv s Bunkerhlll Motocross Track: Caden Hadley was Sunday's winner in the 60cc Stock class at the two-day Utah Sport Riders Association event in Delta, Utah. 125cc Junior title, besting Wilcock and Bryce Gabrielsen. Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway Castro Conquers Victorville By MICHAEL MAHER VICTORVILLE, CA, JUNE 23 They say some things improve with age. This adage could apply to Eddie Castro. For years, "Fast Eddie" was one of the good - but not great - riders on the Southern California speedway circuit, but recently Castro has become one of the dominant forces on the circuit, as he demonstrated again with an impressive win in the Denim Doctor Shootout at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway in Victorville. The championship-style format featured heat races leading to the top four points scorers going on to the Shootout. In round one, Chris Kerr won heat one over Shawn McConnell, Terry McCurdy and Doug Benjamin. Robbie Sauer broke down while leading heat two, allowing Castro, Bobby Schwartz and J.J. Martynse to finish one-twothree. In heat three, Scott Brant and Gary
