Dan Raymond Park Baldwin Does It Again By MEuSSA YELL BRIDGETON, MI, JUNE 16 Dan Baldwin earned yet another Fast Time of the Day trophy on June 16 with a 3.054-second climb up "The Wall" - a 140-foot, 55-degree-angle hillclimb. Baldwin's first attempt in the 750cc class resulted in a 3.4086-second time, putting him behind Mike Salkovich's 3.2627. Baldwin stayed close to the ground on his second climb in a fast shot to the top to take his class and clock the fastest time that day. Baldwin holds the hill record - 2.685 - from last season, when the new hill opened. He also holds the Fast Time record for the original hill at the park. "This new hill is a nice challenge," Baldwin said. "It's kept in excellent condition, which gives la rider] good options." When asked his strategy for those options, Baidwin said he tries to keep the back wheel on the ground to maintain momentum and takes the straightest route to the top. Another winning factor is 10 years of fine-tuning his bike, a 750cc Kawasaki. Baldwin runs modified pipes, bigger carbs, and Wiseco pistons. Experience is another key to his success. Baldwin has been hillclimbing for 22 years. Both his parents competed in hillclimbs, and Danny (as many still call him) started when he was 6 years old. Baldwin's winning bike was originally his father's hillclimbing bike until it was handed down to him a decade ago. The previous weekend, Baldwin was awarded fast time of the day in Port Huron, as well as the two climbs before that at the end of last season. "My living room is getting a lot smaller," Baldwin joked, referring to the accumulating trophies. The Muskegon Motorcycle Club constructed the new hill last year. "Anyone that hasn't seen The Wall needs to see this, said event chairman Mike Raugh. "It's a real spectator hill! The grass is in now, and the hill's in great shape." Fans were thrilled and amused when wellknown motocrosser Greg Raugh made his climbs. Raugh is famous locally for big jumps when racing, but his massive air time at the top of the hill caused him to fly way above the timing light time after time. Recognizing the humor with a big grin, Raugh finally earned second piace in the 86-400 Stock Wheel class with a 4.195-second run. The large crowd enjoyed watching the hillclimb action, as well as their children playing in the creek that separates the spectator area from the hill. Many door prizes kept winners busy selecting items won, while downed bikes were helped off the hill. Prizes were donated by Powers Motor Sports, Sandy's HarleyDavidson, Bitson's Performance, Ashcroft Grocery, and Seven Mile Inn, Bitson's Performance provided the tall Fast Time trophy. Event T-shirts were available from the club's auxiliary. "I had to come see this new hill for myself," said spectator Richard Johnson of Shelby, Michigan, summarizing the excitement felt by ali the newcomers. "I'li be back for every hillclimb!"
