Poggiali was close behind, with Cecchinello, Azuma and Olive in pursuit at the head of a big pack. Ui's brief revival was not to last, and he was soon slipping back. By lap six, the first four - Pedrosa, Cecchinello, Poggi ali and Azuma had broken free from the rest. On lap nine, Cecchinello took the lead at the fast Macleans and held on under severe pressure until the 22nd lap, when Pedrosa nipped ahead. By then, the impressive Vincent had worked his way through the second group and carried on to join the leaders, passing Azuma jusl.before halfdistance, and a furious battle commenced as the end drew closer. Vincent led for the first time on lap 23, but still changing places with Cecchinello. But the Italian was going too hard and slid off and out on the 24th lap, giving Vincent a little breathing space. By the finish, Pedrosa had closed to within two 10ths, but explained that he was too busy making sure Poggiali didn't get past to attack the leader. Azuma was 13 seconds away at the finish, managing to keep the closing Jenkner behind, with Olive on the German's heels and Alex de Angelis only two seconds behind, Ui a similar distance behind him.
