Indiana District 15 State Race Series Round 1of 5: Midway Motorsports Park DIxie MX: In sloppy first-moto conditions, rookie motocrosser Sheldon Seale (6) placed third and maintained a slim series points lead over Jordan Asbell in the Pee Wee 50cc class at round four of the Riders' Summer Shootout Series in Ozark, Alabama. By MARK BUCHANAN Riders' Summer Shootout Series Round 4: Dixie MX Devilbiss' Dixie Delight By HUGH GATUN OZARK, AL, JUNE 1 Brandon Devilbiss scored his first win of the Riders' Summer Shootout Series at Dixie MX, site of round four. He posted a 1·1 sweep in the 85cc Beginner ciass, ahead of previous round winners Damen Dennis and Josh Adams. The Kawasaki pilot has not finished lower than third overall. With two races remaining, he appears to be the rider to beat for the series championship. A red· flag restart in the first 85cc Beginner moto proved costly for Adams. After pulling the first holeshot, he was nowhere to be seen on the second try, as Dennis led Devilbiss and Suzuki·mounted Justin Woodfin. The lead pair raced well ahead of the pack, with Devilbiss riding away to a 20-second win. Adams came back and finished ahead of Woodfin and Axel Love in a close battle for third. Again, Dennis put his KX85 out front in race two, followed by Suzuki jockey Jonathan Woodfin and Devilbiss. By the end of lap one, Devilbiss was in second. He stalked Dennis the entire distance, and then passed for the win with two turns to go. Adams wasn't able to get around Woodfin until late in the race. Nathan Adams rounded out the top five. At 6 foot 6 and 270 pounds. Shane Mosley grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc D mota, ahead of Lee Hester, Rob Davis and series contender Kenny Stinson. Towering over his VZ426F, Mosley held back a secondlap challenge from Stinson, who had moved to second, and Hester. Davis ran a close fourth and took third when Hester fell in the back section. Mosley held the point to the finish. On the last lap, Davis made a key pass on Stin· son in the whoops for second. Jeremy Richard placed fourth on his CR250. Stinson put his RM250 out front in race two. ahead of Davis and Mosley. Davis set Stinson up for a pass by cutting under him in a turn and then riding past in the whoops. Next, Mosley and Richard caught Stinson. Mosley powered past in the whoops, but Davis was out of reach. Davis's 2·1 tally beat out Mosley's 1·2 effort in the overall scoring. Richard was fourth, behind Stinson. The DR Suzuki of Richard Edwards was fastest off the line in the first Hobby moto. He used the smooth, controllable power of the woods machine to stay out front the whole race. Rodney Parsons stayed close in the early going but then had to contend with a closing 52 JULv17,2002' cue Carrier Attacks Midway I • Alan Evans at the finish. Don Bush was a distant fourth. Hungry for series points. CR125·mounted Parsons led the bigger bikes in moto two. Edwards went under Parsons for the lead but couldn't shake the determined rider. Evans moved up and mllde it a three-way battle for the win. Bush ran just a tick off the lead pace, in fourth. On lap three, Parsons and Evans made contact with Evans, hitting the deck. Edwards won again, over Parsons. Bush moved up a position, which gave the Enterprise, Alabama, rider third overall. Thirty-year·old 250cc Money rider Davy Duprel matched up against Joe Bruer, the AMA's eighth-ranked 500cc supercrosser in 1974, in the Over 30/0ver 40 contest. VZ426F-mounted Duprel grabbed the start in race one, only to have Bruer pull the trigger on his Honda CR500 and power past down the first straight. David Armstrong, Carl Drum· mond and Mark Evans followed. Bruer and Duprel quickly made it a two-man race. Duprel pressured Bruer all four laps, but the veteran never flinched. Drummond doubled past Armstrong for third, nearly a minute behind the leaders. In race two, Duprel took the start and Bruer shot past down the first straight. Howard Olive's VZ ran third, ahead of Armstrong and Evans. Duprel relentlessly pursued Bruer. div· ing undemeath him in a banked right·hander at halfway. Bruer stalled in the next turn, refired the big two-stroke with one kick, but never got close to Dupre! again. After a race-long chase. Drummond caught Olive for third. The pair made contact and Olive went down hard. Drummond rode on to finish third. Olive shook off the spill and beat Armstrong to the flag. VZ250F rider Alex Mcinnis was the overall winner in the 11·rlder 125cc D class. In heat one, he followed Kenny Stinson to the check· ers. Daniel Hendrix guided his KX 125 to third. John Martinez led the second round until Stinson passed over the canyon jump. Mcinnis also got around Martinez. Brian McCoy had his older· model RM 125 running In the top five before suffering a mechanical DNF on the second lap. Mcinnis railed the outside of a berm to take the lead from Stinson. After barely cracking the top lOin heat one, Marcus Braswell rebounded for third this time out. Martinez's solid 4·4 showing put the West Point, Georgia, rider on the podium with third overall. n e vv s MITCHELL, IN, JUNE 2 Midway Motorsports Park hosted the first round of the Indiana District 15 State races in Mitchell.
