Youthstream president. said: 'We sincerely hope all the riders who do not have the possibility this year to compete in the World Championship will participate in the National and European Championships. The AMA has presented a check for $54.795.28 to AMA District 37 in Southern California for use in the fight to keep motorized trails open. according to the AMA. The money comes from the Save Our Trails Fund. created in April to accept donations for District 37 legal battles and other efforts to protect riding areas for off-highway motorcycle and ATV riders. Right now. District 37 is in a fight to keep large areas of the Califor· nia desert open to motorized recreation. District 37 has incurred substantial legal bills fighting closures in California. The Save Our Trails Fund is matching contributions made to the fund for District 37 dollar for dollar. up to $50.000. At the National Trials round in Tennessee over the weekend. the AMA announced the four riders who will represent the U.S. at the Trials des National in Portugal in September. They are: Geoff Aaron. Andy Johnson. Chris Florin and Travis Fox. The three women who will represent the U.S. Women's team will be Kerrie Brokaw. Laura Bussing and Nicole Bradford. Thanks to the longtime efforts of Florida off-highway motorcycle and ATV riders. the state now has a law requiring the creation of off-highway-vehicle riding areas and trails. according to the AMA. Called the "T. Mark Schmidt Off-Highway Vehicle Safety and Recreation Act." the new law requires the state Division of Forestry to develop and maintain a system of motorized recreation areas and trails on public land. The new law. backed by local riders and the Motorcycle Industry Council. also calls for a report to be submitted to the governor and Legislature by January 1. recommending five places for motorized recreation use. The law also requires the Mike Metzger. the "Godfather" of freestyle motocross. successfully completed over 30 ramp-to-dirt backflips over a 48-foot gap in his backyard in Menifee.
