The first Scratch semi had Bobby "Cowboy" Krips on the pole, with Shaun Harmatiuk

in two and Doug Benjamin and McConnell on
Logan's Run
the outside. It was McConneli from the get-go,
and the rest of the fieid battled for second and
the final transfer to the main. On the whiteflag lap, Krips got Harmatiuk off the groove
and came away with second. Benjamin got
through for the third.
Both Benjamin and Harmatiuk would meet
again in the Consi.
The second semi had Bobby "Boogaloo"
Schwartz on the pole, Brant in two, and
"Rockin'" Richard Jones in three. Johnny
Walker was unable to make the cali. Schwartz
cut the best gate and led it to the white flag,
when Brant tumed up the wick and took the
win. Schwartz and Brant were headed to the
main; Jones was on his way to the Consi.
The Consi had Benjamin on the pole, with
Harmatiuk in two and Jones in three. The gate
went to Hannatiuk, with Benjamin in second.
Jones made a great pass coming out of four
and then went hunting for Harmatiuk, who had
a good lead. Although Jones was closing, time
ran out and he had to settle for second. Benjamin was third.
In the Scratch main, the pole went to
McConneli, with Brant in two, and Schwartz
and Krips on the outside. McConneli got the
gate, but Brant just twisted the throttle a little
harder and came up with the lead as they
came out of two. As soon as the lead was his,

it was just a question of how far ahead he was
going to be. McConneli had his hands fuli with
Schwartz but was able to use the low line, and
he ended up with the place money. Schwartz
held Krips off for third.

OWOSSO, MI, JUNE 7
Full-on dedicated nighttime motocross made
a return to District 14 as Middleberry Moto-X
opened its door for Friday night racing action
on June 7. Johnny "Holeshot" Logan lived up
to his nickname by nailing both starts en route
to a pair of convincing mota wins in the 250cc
A class.
"I really like this track: Logan said afterward, "and the guys promoting these events
have some great ideas to make things even
better, not only for the riders but the fans as
well."
Clint Sumner was second overall after a
race-long battle with Shane Carlton in mota
one. Mota two featured a new combatant, as
Matt Chick was the man on the rear wheel of
Sumner's CR250, finishing third in the second
mota as well as third overall, behind Logan
and Sumner. Carlton was pushed back to
fourth in mota two, but he topped the 16-24
class aboard his Tom Cycle YZ250 during the
Middleberry Moto-X season opener.
In the Mini classes, Chance Dell pushed his
CR80 to the Mini-class overall on his way to
the 80cc (7-11) class victory, in spite of going
up against the 80cc (12-15) class as well. Dell
leaped out of the starting area to take a commanding lead in both matos, laying down
some very fast laps while impressing the
crowed with some killer whips and straightaway-long wheeJies.
"I have been doing a lot of riding with
Justin Blake lately at the track at home: Dell
said at the trophy presentation, "and it's really
paying off. Thanks, Justinl"
While these guys did make some mistakes
along the way, you can tell they're really trying to put on a good show as well as a great

Many other riders followed his lead, and with a

Rock River Riders Hillclimb
take the class lead and set a new fast time of
Wheelwright's All
Right at Rock River HC
POLO, IL, JUNE 16
Eric Wheelwright from Elizabeth, Illinois, had a
nearly perfect day at the Rock River Riders
hillclimb near Polo, Illinois. Riding his Jackson
Performance YZ250, he flashed his National
Champion skills with a sizzling 3.228-second
run on his second ride to take the win in the
large and very competitive 250cc class. He
had taken the class lead in the first round with
a 3.441-second ride, but his buddy and traveling companion Crag Schnitzler put the
pressure on him in the second round with a
3.3g0-second run to take the lead - at least for
a while.
Wheelwright was the 250cc-class National
Champion in 2000, and number two in 2001.
Wheelwright is the reigning National Champi-
on in the 600cc class, and he clearly displayed those skills also. Ridina. his JPC
CR500, he posted a good 3.409-second run in
the first round to take the class lead into intermission. Then, just as in the 250cc class,
Schnitzler took the class lead with a blazing
3.1l4-second run on his KTM 550 to move
into the class lead. And, just as In the 250cc
class, Wheelwright responded with a full-throttle attack of the hill, flying high over the top
and stopping the clock in a breathtaking
2.969 seconds. The time was not only good
for the class win, it was also the fastest overall
time of the day. Butch Fetters was also fast,
posting a 3.202-second time on his 10<500 to
take third, followed closely by Paul Hackbarth
with a 3.268-second run on his Honda.
Wheelwright had his perfect day spoiled in
the 400cc class, where he "only" got second.
Riding another YZ250, he posted a good
4.823-second time, but Matt Peters, riding a
YZ400F thumper, roared over the top in an
impressive 4.019 seconds for the win.
It was heartwarming to see Wheelwright

mission with a 3.877 -second run on his first
ride, but then, in the second round, he saw his
time beaten several times - the fastest by who
else but Craig Schnitzler, who sailed his KTM
360 over the top in a sizzling 3.089 seconds to
the day. Stewart, flashing his two National
Championships style, blew over the top in
3.001 seconds, taking the class win and setting a new fast time - which fell to Wheelwright a few minutes later.
