It out STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROD SIMMONS SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 25·26 rawing racers from overseas as well as 15 states, the Vintage Iron World Championships continue to be the year's "must-do" event on every Vintage motocrosser's calendar. In this, the fifth running of the race, more than 400 entrants brought a wide array of historic machinery to the Glen Helen Raceway starting line. The weekend's proceedings got under way with the oldest machinery competing first. The Pre-1965 Beezer geezers, Jerry Sterret and Phil Benedict, have diced all year in regional events aboard similarly prepared 250cc BSAs and Saturday was no different. This time it was Sterret coming out on top and holding bragging rights for at least two weeks until the pair go at it once again. On paper, the Greeves of Kawasaki's own Norm Bigelow should have been the favorite in the Expert division but that's why they run races on tracks and not on paper. Rick O'Donnell took the win aboard (of all things) a tWin·cylinder Honda. It would prove to be O'Donnell's only class win, as he met his match in the Pre· 1975 class, being bested by Arizonan Ed Zornes and his "strap-tank" YZ, and the 1976 Husqvama of Mike Owensi, who dominated the Evolution One (Pre-1978) division. Owens' ride was especially impressive as the Evo class rode a combined moto format with the Evo Three division. Owens finished both motos, besting all Evo Three riders bar class winner Johnny Oler (a.k.a. the "No Show"). Other winners of note included Vic Palfreyman and his passenger, Perry Melrillo, in the crowd-pleasing Sidecar race; Pros Dave Coupe (in the Over 40 and Pre·1975 250cc classes) and Bruce McDougal (in the Pre1975 125cc class); father and son Dennis (Intermediate) and David Burns (Novice) in the Decade class; and, last but not least, Over 60-c1ass winners John Huegel, Michael Dwyer and Colin Metcher. Following Saturday's racing action, the Charity Memoribilia Auction was held. Each year, Vintage Iron selects a charity to support, and this year's choice was the Ul)ited States Adaptive Rehabilitation Center, which is involved in reintroducing individuals with disabilities back into various sports. Notably, recipients of their programs have been Craig Anderson, himself a Vintage motocrosser prior to his accident, and Tom White's son Brad. USARC offers both summer and winter sports programs that include mono-snow skiing for those who have lost the use of their legs, as well as parasailing, water-skiing, and downhill mountain-biking. This year's group of generous Vintage racers raised more than $4000 for the charity and went home with some great pieces of memorabilia, such as a Hot Wheels Helmet signed by all the YROC riders, Broc Glover's jerseys, Jim Holley's cache of Yamaha clothing, and Hideaki Suzuki's chest protector. The Vintage Iron World Championship attracts some of the most nicely restored motocross bikes in the country. It also generates its share of rust buckets that get dragged out for a once-a-year romp at the big event. This year's stand-out bike, nicknamed the "Sea Hag" because it looked like it was just pulled out of the Pacific, was a 1977 YZ400 that was purchased by Vintage Iron for around $200 the Sunday prior to the event and underwent a less-thanextensive restoration. "It was more of a rust-oration," Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty said. "We pulled off the bodywork and forks, then double-fisted rattlecanned it. For the uninitiated, that's the time-efficient technique of 'flat black in the left hand, gloss black in the right.' The forks got a set of new seals and a change of fluids, a set of prehistoric knobbies were persuaded onto the rims, and the 'Hag was dolled up with new fenders and graphics. Initially, we put it together to show folks that you don't have to spend a ton of money to have fun, but the experiment went off the chart in terms of results." The Sea Hag handily won the Parts Unlimited Dealer Challenge (which included modern bikes) and then was promptly donated to the U.S. Adaptive Recreation Center charity auction on Saturday night. The high bidder was Canadian David Pinkman, who plunked down $1000 for the 01' gal with the expressed intent of racing it on Sunday (after his Maico gave up the ghost on Saturday). In true Cinderella fashion, the Sea Hag carried him to victory in both classes he entered; his first wins at the VIWC in four years of trying. Asked if he would bring the YZ back for another go in 2003, Pinkman said: "No way! She is going to be enshrined in my garagel This thing is magic." An annual fixture of the Vintage Iron World Championship is the MX des Nations race, originally conceived to give the visiting international riders from Italy, Japan, Australia, England and other nations an opportunity to represent their country. Then the individual States wanted in because, as one competitor from Texas put it, "Heck, our dang state is three times bigger than some of their whole countries!" The result is full-on three-man team race for bragging rights and a medal to hang around their necks - just the thing to motivate a group of Brits to travel across the pond to the event every year. In the past, they have been close to the top step of the podium, but broken bikes, racing mishaps, or warm beer have kept them from their goal. Their bad luck struck again as team leader Gavin Young broke his leg while practicing for the event in England. Undaunted, he and his band of merry men crated up their old bikes and gear and came anyway. Broken leg or not, Young vowed to compete, and compete he did, winning his class on Saturday and then taking the starting line with his team on Sunday moming for the MXdN race. A few laps into the contest, it appeared that the pain was going to be too great and he would have to retire, taking with him any hopes the UK team might have had of pulling off a win. Lap after lap, Young rode with one foot on the pegs in a desperate effort to finish, albeit back in the field. Thanks to Young's equally dedicated teammates, Team England finally found the Motocross des Nations event to be their cup of tea - with milk and two sugars. ell 610n Helon llKeway Parll sa.
