Jackson Simmering at Hot Summer Nights By MIKE ·SIR SMll£Y" Sam's the Man PERRIS, CA, JUNE 8 RVER In a series race, you look at an overall goal and must realize that the goal is accomplished CASTLE ROCK, WA, JUNE 8 with each lap, each moto, and each race. It is important to know who you're up against Rain showers earlier in the day made for a when the gate drops, and always charge for- great IT track, with all the traction anyone ward. The person you beat in the first moto may come back to surprise you in moto two; could want. At the start of the Open Money main event, Sam Halbert grabbed the holeshot. Jeff Annen passed both Nick Sellers and Matt Schweitzer to come out of the first turn in second. By the end of the first lap, Jethro Halbert had come from the back row and blown by them all and set his sights on his younger brother Sam, in the lead. By the third lap, he was hot on his brother's heels, but the race was red-flagged due to a fire in the infield. On the restart, Sam again got the holeshot, with Sellers and Annen side by side. Jethro split them up over the jump, passing Annen first and then Sellers down the straightaway, and once again he was chasing Sam. It was a classic case of sibling rivalry: Jethro would pull up alongside Sam down the straightaway, but Sam would lose him in the dogleg and barely hold him off at the end of the straight- away, as they were side by side coming into it almost every time. But when the checkered flag fell, it was quite an upset: Younger brother Sam won on a two-stroke, over Jethro on a four-stroke. Annen was third. Jethro got the holeshot in the Pro Sport/Expert race and led from start to finish, ahead of George Prindiville and Schweitzer. In the Open Amateur final, Sam got the holeshot, ahead of Derek Oquist and Sellers. Then Sellers successfully made it undemeath Oquist in the first tum to take second. Sellers hung up front with Sam for two laps but then started dropping back and fell victim to second, as Bell made no mistakes for Cisar to capitalize on. Tyler Kalisiak grabbed a pair of thirds while trying to run down Cisar, and fourth overall went to Joey Dobson (7-4). The most-improved-moto award went to Brandon Bosworth, who recently moved into the cl8ss after top finishes in the Spring Series as a Beginner. Bosworth picked up a fifth in moto two after placing 23rd in moto one. Mid Cities rider Chad Gaumer came out of the gate in moto one with a fistful of throttle in the 125cc Intermediate class, with Fly Racing's David Sullins and Bill's Pipes' Cody Hertel chasing his rear fender. Hertel and Sullins swapped moto finishes, with Sullins taking third and second-best honors going to Hertel. Chris Panek placed fourth in moto one but then ended up with the overall after scoring a win in moto two, as Gaumer took a fourth in moto two and missed out on ~ny top-three finishes. Pechanga Ent, & Temecula Motorsports Castle Rock Fairgrounds By SAM HALBERT his 3-3 score. Jeff Bell swept both 125cc Novice motos aboard his McGrath Racing Yamaha. Steven Cisar gave chase during both motos, finishing that spot you picked out on your wali may still be missing a championship plaque after the final round. There were seven races at this opening round of the Hot Summer Nights Series in which the overall winner was the loser in moto one. YZ-mounted Dane Jackson claimed both wins in the 80cc (14- 16) class, leaving the rest of the pack to maneuver for position. Billy Henderson kept Jackson honest in moto one, with Frankie Salvatore third. Henderson was absent from the drop of the gate in moto two, so Salvatore led the chase for the leader. Austin Brown placed 10th in moto one and moved into fourth overall with a third in mota two, behind Salvatore, who picked up second overall. Brian Bebeck went 8-5 for the final top-five spot. Jackson had his work cut out for him in the Supermini class, facing a green machine and one Shawn Hayes, who checked out in both motos, leaving Jackson with second. Phillip Thorstensen is improving with each Jon Simmons and Bryan Jaramillo traded places in the 250cc Intermediate class. Simmons ended up behind the leader in mote two for second overall, behind Jaramillo. Jason Larson placed fourth, behind Danny Seyler, in moto one, and then picked up third in moto two after Seyler was a no-show in moto two. Results 50 STK (4·6): 1. Cody Sloan (Cob): 2.
