Brad c: Fire & Police MX Night Series Round Z: Competition Parle The Late Shift on a New Beat BY MIKE "SIR SMIlEY" RYER SAN JACINTO, CA, JUNE 10 Round two of the Fire [, Police MX Night Series took place at Competition Park's new location, on the grounds of the Scooba Indian Reservation. The facility had just opened three days prior to the event, so almost everyone who came to race was seeing the new faciHty for the first time. This made for some interesting race action, as the new layout left some riders doubting their abilities in unfamiliar territory. Despite winning what usually turns out to be the crucial third moto, Mark Ellis (2-2-1) of the Riverside Police Department took home a silver medal in the 18-29 Intermediate class after losing the first two moto wins to Rob Lelm of the LA County EMTs. Lelm picked up his second win of the series with his 1-1-2 score, while Rick Golden of the California Department of Corrections took home the bronze. Ryan Chapin, Steve Coster and Donald Upton placed first, second and third in the 18-29 Expert class, respectively, at round one, but they were aU no-shows for round two. Jonny Roberg of the San Bernardino Police Department took full advantage of their absence as he took a second in the first moto to Rich Stephens of the San Louis Obispo Sheriff's Department. and then picked up two mota wins thereafter to take home the gold. Stephens finished second with his 1-4-2 total to take the silver from Scott Nelson, who finished 3-3-3 for the bronze. Anthony Perez swept the 18-24 Beginner class, while the rest of the pack tried to figure out where they wanted to finish. Ryan Basaker of the LAPD went 3-4-2 for the silver, and D. Mahoney went 2-3-4 for the bronze. Joshua Tyree of the Califomia Department of Correc- tions and Mike Cupido of the Riverside Police Department rounded out the top five. Rick Crosbie of the Torrance Police Department looked unstoppable in the 30-39 Intermediate contest after two mota wins. Fellow officer Scott Arnold picked up a second in mota one and then a seventh in mota two, which would guarantee he would not take home a medal without a win in moto three. Tedd Black of the West Covina PD took a pair of thirds in the first two motos and looked in good shape for an easy top-three overall going into the third moto. David Carlson of the San Bernardino Police Department took a fourth in moto one, and then got better with each successive mota with a second in moto two and a win in mota three to give him the overall and the gold. Crosbie took a sixth in mota three for second overall, and Black picked up a fourth for third overall. Despite a third in mota three, Shawn Youngman of the LA County Fire Department picked up a fifth and a fourth in the first two motos to give hjm the final top-five spot, ahead of Amold, who went 2-7-2 for fourth. AMP Top Gun Summer·X Series Round 1: Los Banos Fairgrounds Blair Blasts to Top Gun Win By JIM AND JUSTIN ENos LOS BANOS, CA, JUNE 15 Saturday night racing returned to the Los Banos Fairgrounds as AMP Racing kicked off the opening round of the AMP Top Gun Summer-X Series. The Alpinestars/Merced Powersports/Swift Auto World-sponsored event drew a huge contingent of nearly 400 riders who took on the mild-mannered, supercross-style track in front of more than 1000 spectators. With great racing taking place in all the divisions, AMA Supercross and National Pro Daniel Blair stole the spotlight aboard an MXH/Powerhouse/Thor/Big Gun Yamaha, claiming wins in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes and capping off his day with a huge win in the evening's main event, the Top Gun Shootout. Following the evening's regular program, the Top Gun Shootout features the 12 fastest riders lined up in a single row, with the fastest rider - in this case, Blair - occupying the last position. Spectators participate in a bidding process that rewards the winning bidder a split of the pot, shared with the winning racer. Based on his earlier performances. Blair garnered the highest bid of the evening, and he felt his chances of a win were pretty good. "I had some good motos earlier today and feel pretty comfortable on the track,' Blair said. "Being in the last spot, I just have to make some quick passes, and if I can get up front, I know I can pull away from these guys.' However, Blair had his work cut out for him, as fellow fast Pros Jeff Pestana and Scott Davis were lined up just in front of him. In fact, Pestana had cut identical lap times in the 250cc Pro motos, taking a 1-3 score for second overall. And, like Blair, Pestana felt confident. "If I can keep it on two wheels, I'll win," said Pestana. "I think I'm the fastest guy out here tonight, and Blair is behind me." At the drop of the flag, the 12-lap event got under way, with Intennediate Suzuki pilot Nick Davis leading the way. Fellow Intermediate Cory McDaniel quickly displaced Davis, with Kenny Heess, Danny Paladino and Billy Jurevich in pursuit. But Blair was on a rampage, picking off riders in a hurry, including Scott Davis and Pestana. By lap six, Blair was in second place, breathing down the neck of the Honda-mounted Heess. Having found an extremely fast outside line through the whoops early on, Blair used that line and blasted by Heess to take over the lead. The subsequent laps saw Blair stretch his lead over the field, and at the white flag, Blair had a 10-second lead over Heess. Foreseeing an easy Victory, Blair nearly made a crucial mistake as he came through the whoop section, letting off just a bit and nearly tucking the front end. But the checkers waved him across, to huge applause from the crowd. Heess finished a strong second, ahead of Pestana, McDaniel and Jurevich. "My whole career, I've trained so hard and it just hasn't been enough," Blair said, "But lately I've been trying even harder, and it's showing, because I've had some really good results lately. Things are starting to click now. I'm able to stay smooth lap after lap and keep my speed consistent for an entire mota, As for that last pass through the whoops, I leamed from a mistake without making it." In the lntermediate ranks, David Gassin piloted a potent Posey Racing YZ250F to victory in the 250cc class. After a mistake-filled first moto, Gassin settled down and took a huge second-mota win, tallying up a 2-1 score over Shawn Trantham, who put in a consistent 3-3 moto score for second overall. In the 125s, Cory McDaniel bested the IO-rider field. McDaniel clicked off fast laps that saw him take a pair of convincing wins, ahead of Nick Davis, who tallied up a 3-2 score for the runner-up spot on the evening.
