William Frank piloted his Yamaha to the front of the pack and the early lead in the flfst 125cc C mota. Trailing him were Dan Zabrowski, Mark Stephens, Bart Holt and Jim WiJkre. Frank had a three-second lead by lap two. Zabrowski and Stephens were still second and third, respectively, while Wilkre and Stephen Grossweiler moved up to fourth and fifth, relegating Holt to sixth. The top five were beginning to spread out some by the third lap. The top three were unchanged, while Grossweiler made the pass on Wilkre for fourth, dropping Wilkre to fifth. Grossweiler was on the move and managed to pass Stephens to take third. Stephens dropped to fourth. Then Wilkre passed the fading Stephens to claim fourth, dropping Stephens another spot to fifth. Grossweiler then caught and passed Zabrowski for second on the white-flag lap. Then Grossweller got Frank for the lead, but it was short· lived, as Frank came right back to reclaim the lead and hold off Grossweiler for the first-moto win. Rounding out the top five were Grossweiler, Zabrowski, Wilkre and Brian Holhen. Stephens, yet another Vamaha pilot, got his thumper to the front of the pack and rounded the first tum with the lead in the second mota. In tow were Holt, David Rockefeller, Jim Triano and Grossweiler. Holt took the lead shortly after the start of lap two by jumping the huge Hurricane Hills step-up. No one eise in the class would even attempt the huge obstacle, but Holt was doing it on every lap and increasing his lead by a second and a half every time he did it. Stephens was relegated to second, Rockefeller and Triano held third and fourth, and Frank was now up to fifth after a not-so-great start. Holt's lead was more than J0 seconds by the fourth lap, and he made the second-mota win look pretty easy. Trailing were Frank. Wilkre, Stephens and Zabrowski. Frank's ]-2 rides earned him the overall win. Runner-up honors went to Wilkre with his 4-3 score. Third overall went to Holt via his 7-1 rides. Gregory Laney nailed the start of the first 85cc (J 0-11) mota, ahead of Marshall Hurd, Austin Kozimor and Nick McPhee. The top three were unchanged after 2 1/2 laps, while McPhee passed Kozimor to take fourth, dropping Kozimor to fifth. The top five spread out pretty quickly and the rest of the mota was a bit of a snoozer, as Laney took the first-moto win with a whopping IS-second advantage. In tow were Hurd, Whitmore, McPhee and Kozimor. Laney managed to get another good start in the second mota and lead the pack out of Kawasaki rider Preston Blake took control of the Mini A-class lead for the entire five laps of the 3.6-mile course. Kawasaki rider Chad Woods stayed right on his fender, waiting for an opportunity that never came. Blake took the win, with Woods just two seconds behind him. Honda rider Ryan Robbins was third. In the Masters class, Honda rider Jim Thompson took the holeshot and kept the lead to take the win. KTM rider Donnie Lewis battled with Suzuki rider Bob Wick for second. Lewis stalled while trying to put a move on a Mini B rider; Wick saw the opportunity to pass and took it. Lewis repassed Wick on the last lap, taking second. with Wick third. the first tum, followed by Whitmore, McPhee, Hurd and Joseph Peditto. Laney checked out by lap three with a huge 14-second iead. Hurd was now up to second, dropping Whitmore to third, while McPhee and Peditto were still fourth and fifth, respectively. Laney made the second-moto win look easier than the first. Rounding out the top five were Whitmore, Hurd, McPhee and Jordan Harris. Laney's perfect 1- I rides earned him the top tier of the 85cc (10-11) podium. Whitmore's 3-2 score was good enough for runner-up, and rounding out the podium was Hurd, with his 2-3 tally. Baker took the holeshot, but Lancaster stayed right on Baker's rear fender for the first two laps and then made a clean Lancaster recovered to take second, just 30 seconds behind Baker. Kawasaki rider Timmy Craddock came in two minutes behind Lancaster for third. Yamaha rider Chuck Hancock took the early iead in the 250cc A class, with KTM rider Randall Ellison in second and Yamaha rider Ty Shipley in third. With five of six finishes counting toward the series championships (to be celebrated at the banquet on October 6) and with the hottest-looking score staff, the Elko Dealer Series is definitely the place to be this summer. With the best Mini pilots around, the 80cc (12-15), (7-11) and (9-12) age classes' riders lists read like a "who's who" of 80cc talent in Minnesota.
