William Frank piloted his Yamaha to the
front of the pack and the early lead in the flfst
125cc C mota. Trailing him were Dan
Zabrowski, Mark Stephens, Bart Holt and Jim
WiJkre. Frank had a three-second lead by lap
two. Zabrowski and Stephens were still second
and third, respectively, while Wilkre and
Stephen Grossweiler moved up to fourth and
fifth, relegating Holt to sixth. The top five were
beginning to spread out some by the third lap.
The top three were unchanged, while Grossweiler made the pass on Wilkre for fourth,
dropping Wilkre to fifth. Grossweiler was on
the move and managed to pass Stephens to
take third. Stephens dropped to fourth. Then
Wilkre passed the fading Stephens to claim
fourth, dropping Stephens another spot
to fifth.
Grossweiler then caught and passed
Zabrowski for second on the white-flag lap.
Then Grossweller got Frank for the lead, but it
was short· lived, as Frank came right back to
reclaim the lead and hold off Grossweiler for
the first-moto win. Rounding out the top five
were Grossweiler, Zabrowski, Wilkre and Brian
Holhen.
Stephens, yet another Vamaha pilot, got
his thumper to the front of the pack and
rounded the first tum with the lead in the second mota. In tow were Holt, David Rockefeller,
Jim Triano and Grossweiler. Holt took the lead
shortly after the start of lap two by jumping
the huge Hurricane Hills step-up. No one eise
in the class would even attempt the huge
obstacle, but Holt was doing it on every lap
and increasing his lead by a second and a half
every time he did it. Stephens was relegated
to second, Rockefeller and Triano held third
and fourth, and Frank was now up to fifth after
a not-so-great start.
Holt's lead was more than J0 seconds by
the fourth lap, and he made the second-mota
win look pretty easy. Trailing were Frank.
Wilkre, Stephens and Zabrowski. Frank's ]-2
rides earned him the overall win. Runner-up
honors went to Wilkre with his 4-3 score.
Third overall went to Holt via his 7-1 rides.
Gregory Laney nailed the start of the first
85cc (J 0-11) mota, ahead of Marshall Hurd,
Austin Kozimor and Nick McPhee. The top
three were unchanged after 2 1/2 laps, while
McPhee passed Kozimor to take fourth,
dropping Kozimor to fifth. The top five spread
out pretty quickly and the rest of the mota
was a bit of a snoozer, as Laney took the
first-moto win with a whopping IS-second
advantage. In tow were Hurd, Whitmore,
McPhee and Kozimor.
Laney managed to get another good start
in the second mota and lead the pack out of
Kawasaki rider Preston Blake took control
of the Mini A-class lead for the entire five laps
of the 3.6-mile course. Kawasaki rider Chad
Woods stayed right on his fender, waiting for
an opportunity that never came. Blake took
the win, with Woods just two seconds behind
him. Honda rider Ryan Robbins was third.
In the Masters class, Honda rider Jim
Thompson took the holeshot and kept the
lead to take the win. KTM rider Donnie Lewis
battled with Suzuki rider Bob Wick for second.
Lewis stalled while trying to put a move on a
Mini B rider; Wick saw the opportunity to pass
and took it. Lewis repassed Wick on the last
lap, taking second. with Wick third.
the first tum, followed by Whitmore, McPhee,
Hurd and Joseph Peditto. Laney checked out
by lap three with a huge 14-second iead. Hurd
was now up to second, dropping Whitmore to
third, while McPhee and Peditto were still
fourth and fifth, respectively. Laney made the
second-moto win look easier than the first.
Rounding out the top five were Whitmore,
Hurd, McPhee and Jordan Harris. Laney's
perfect 1- I rides earned him the top tier of the
85cc (10-11) podium. Whitmore's 3-2 score
was good enough for runner-up, and rounding
out the podium was Hurd, with his 2-3 tally.
