all night. Bigelow, Stanley and then
Kopp rounded out the top five. Landes passed Kopp just after the finish
line on the front straight. Eslick was
charging in on Kopp. Cartwright,
Poovey and Vernon had a three-way
battle for 10th, with Cartwright leading the way.
Schnabel made his move on lap
19, passing King when both encountered lappers. Pegram and West were
racing each other but moved over
when shown the blue flag. King then
got back around Schnabel for the
lead on the back straightaway.
Bigelow was running a lonely third.
Stanley had Landes all over him.
With five laps to go, Eslick passed
Kopp at the finish line. Wait was right
behind Eslick and also got around
Kopp. Hlebo was by himself in ninth.
Cartwright was around Poovey and
then pulled away from the 2001
champion.
With two laps to go, King and
Schnabel sliced through traffic. They
with Bigelow, Kopp's gearshift fell off,
and his KTM was stuck in fifth gear
for the rest of the main event. Stanley passed the hard-luck Kopp to
take over fourth place.
Eslick was in fifth, but he crashed
before the Dunlop jump. Landes got
around the fallen Eslick for fifth, but
Eslick kept the bike running and was
up before Pegram also passed him.
Pegram and Hlebo were now running
just ahead of Wait, who was eighth with
about 10 laps to go. Two laps later,
Pegram's pipe was coming off. The
black flag came out for Pegram, but the
Suzuki rider got rid of the fallen part
and remained on the track.
With under 10 laps to go, Schnabel
was as close as he had been to King
