STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, MAY 27 ~ teven Haughelstine and Michael Hall spent their Memorial Day Holiday tearing up the Perris Raceway track during the annual running of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/FMF Factory 909 Racing Parts-sponsored Memorial Day Motocross. Haughelstine won three out of four motos entered to collect the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate-class victories. Hall ran away with both moto wins in the 60cc Open class, and then used consistent 2-2 rides to top the 80cc Open class as well. Haughelstine's first moto win of the day came in the opening 250cc Intermediate moto, where he took control of the lead on lap one and proceeded to check out. Chris Panek held down second place for a couple of laps before Micky Griffin took over the position for good. Jon Simmons worked his way up into a third-place finish, ahead of Panek and Bryan Jaramillo. Moto two was all Haughelstine's, as he went wire to wire aboard his NCY/Troy Lee Designs-backed Yamaha for the win. Simmons spent another moto working up through traffic to go 3-2 for second overall. A couple of bobbles dropped Griffin to a sixth-place finish, which was good enough for third overall, topping the e; 6-3 tally of A.J. Steinbach and the 5-4 score of Jaramillo. Branden Milstead jumped out to an early lead in the first 125cc Intermediate bout, only to be passed by Griffin after a lap. Griffin put it in overdrive and motored away for the win. Haughelstine overcame a midpack start to finish second, ahead of Nick Hernandez, Milstead and Robbie Gatan. Haughelstine and Griffin went at it over the lead in round two, with Haughelstine prevailing for his second class win of the day. Suzuki-mounted Milstead finished third for third overall, with Gatan (5-6) and Simmons (85) earning fourth and fifth, respectively. KX65-mounted Hall put in a couple of flawless motos to sweep the 60cc Open class. Mason Sweeden and Michael Leib each grabbed a runner-up finish, with Leib's coming in the allimportant second moto. Steven Haughelstlne won both the 12!Scc and 2!SOCc Intermediate c:IaslIes at Penis Raceway. 50 JULY 3,2002' IC U IC •• n e _ s Shawn Gritten went 4-3 for fourth, with Chris Gaumer going 6-5 to crack the top five. Hall slowly worked up from his fifth-place gate to pass Salvatore with time running out for a second-place showing. Dana Dreier was in there for a close fourth, over Curtis McLellan. Chad Anderson more than made up for his 11 th-place performance in moto one to dominate round two to salvage fifth overall. Dreier (4-4) edged out Salvatore (3-5) for third in the final standings. Tyson Taylor led the first 10 laps of the one-shot 125cc Pro race before rookie Pro Corey Macomber took over to collect the first-place payback. Randy Clark went the entire distance in third place, with Michel Sandoval earning fourth. Another new Pro, Blake Thorpe, put in an impressive ride to come from the back of the field for fifth. Consistency paid off for Simmons in the Schoolboy class, as he went 2-2 for the overall win. Eric McCrummen smoked everyone in the first moto but was a no-show in round two. Randall Hall backed up his fifthplace finish in moto one with a wireto-wire romp in moto two for second overall, ahead of Jeff Loop (3-3) and Tyler O'Neill (4-4). Cobra-mounted Carlos Don aced both motos of the 50cc (7-8) Stock class. Don led every lap of both races in convincing fashion.
