Honey Lake Summer Series Round 1: Honey Lake Motocross Park Bv Steve Lamson decided to try out the muchballyhooed Honey Lake Motocross Part< and wound up winning the 250cc Pro and Over 30 Pro classes at the opening round of their Summer Series. CASHEL HACKLAND PHOTOS BV JOSH PETERSON AND DIANE GARLAND JI\ILFORD, CA, JUNE 9 Iready an established facility well-liked by West Coast motocrossers, Honey Lake Motocross Park's first round of the Summer Series opened with more than 300 riders and several hundred spectators in attendance. The event was a double-header, with a practice on Saturday allowing riders to get a feel for the track. Former United States Outdoor motocross champion Steve Lamson made the trip from Camino, California, to tryout the much-talked-about track in between stages of the Outdoor Nationals. Lamson is third on the all-time win list for the 125cc U.S. Outdoor Championship. Also among the" A list" for the day was Donnie Cantaloupi, a former Moto-X Fox and Team Yamaha rider who was teammates with Honey Lake track owner Larry Wosick in their "younger days." As the season progresses, more and more riders from Lassen County are finding their way to the victory podium. Dakota Johnson of Susanville was among the many 50cc riders to put in an awesome performance on Sunday. Another up-andcoming star is Kaelie Pena, also of Susanville, who rode to a seventhplace finish amid a large number of riders. Four-year-old twins Travis and Cheyenne Wosick (the nephew and niece of Larry and Lise Wosick) made their debut on Sunday on the Pee Wee track. Young Mr. Wosick appears to have the making of a motocrosser, while Ms. Wosick took it all in stride and putted around the track. Susanville, and Chico Honda Cycles - were on hand with spot prizes for the riders. A local nonprofit organization, the Doyle Boy Scouts, were out making sure no one went hungry; they did an awesome job of offering everyone an array of delicious food. With three rounds of the Summer Series still to In the 250cc Pro class, Lamson was anything but intimidating for the local Pros; Kenny Lash made Lamson work for both his holeshots; and although off-the-track respect for this former U.S. champion was evident, it was "each man for himself" during the motos. In the second moto of the day, Lamson quickly set a pace for the other riders. After establishing a lead, he put his box-stock Husky to work and again got a taste of what old-school motocross is all about. Nathan Tiearney of Carson City, Nevada, was also a first-timer to Honey Lake; his wide-open style appears nerve-wracking but leaves very little room for crashing. Tiearney started both his motos in third place but was consistent in placing second. A fumble by Lamson at the base of the finish-line jump created an opportunity for Tiearney to claim the lead. Lamson, however, was quick on the take and was up and riding again in a matter of seconds. A position on the upper level of the newly built threestory scoring tower allows full view of the track, and the entire moto was a close race, with each Pro putting in some noteworthy riding. More than half of the 250cc Pro riders were involved in double classes as well as back to back motos. In the Over 30 Vet Pro class, Cantaloupi showed everyone that once a top rider, always a top rider. Although motocross is purely for enjoyment for Cantaloupi, he displayed his longstanding talent by performing gymnastics-like maneuvers that involved over-rotating on a jump, ending in casing the triple. Cantaloupi placed first. "The track is awesome," Cantaloupi enthused. "It is one of the only old-school motocross tracks left." Yamaha-backed Tim McClintlock and Michael Johnson ran away with the second moto and put on quite an awesome show for the spectators. McClintiock and Johnson were trading up for second place, and although Johnson gained a lead, he tired toward the end of the moto, allowing McClintlock to charge forward to claim second. A lot of riders are using these race days to put in extra practice time for the Four-Stroke National that will be held at the track on July 6 and 7. Series sponsor Pro Circuit was on hand with moto prizes for the day, as well as main prizes for each series champion. Other sponsors - including Big Valley Honda, Pizza Factory of Donnie Cantaloupi won the Over 40 class In Milford, California. cycle go, it is anyone's championship at this point, and everyone is anticipating an exciting season.
