continues to travel south from his home to compete on the same track. Back then, Warren was fllmous for his "Snortin' 750cc Nor· ton"; nowadays, he competes in the Senior Over 50 and Senior Over 60 Amateur classes on a Rotax. On this weekend, Warren totally dominated both classes, going four for four in Senior main events aboard his First Klass Glass-sponsored machine. F.ellow Michigan "old-timer" Tom Cummings, himself a former National number holder, also continues to trek southward for the yearly races at Kenton, but nowadays he leaves the riding to his son Nicky. It was hard not to root for this talented 15-year-old. Only in attendance for one day of the doubleheader, young Nicky managed two wins (in the 5050c and Open Amateur classes) and one runnerup finish (in 250cc Amateur) on Sunday. Another of the young guns from Michigan who, like so many of his home-state predecessors, uses the Ohio horse tracks to hone his cushion craft - is the polite and likable Logan Myers of Wheeler, Michigan. Fourteenyear·old Myers rides out of veteran John Cooper's formidable stable. Besides Myers and the Coopers (including Dad, John, and son Johnny G, a.k.a. "C.J. "), the team truck also housed Nichole Cheza, a card-carrying member of the Michigan Mafia. Hard-charging Nichole is also 14 and a rider to watch. Cheza only rode on Saturday, but she managed two hard-eamed podium finishes. Ohio continues the "border rivalry" with its neighbors to the north, offering up its own homegrown talent to compete with the youth of the Wolverine state. Last year's Triangle MC High-Paint Award winner, 14-year-old Ricky Marshall, gave it all he had to come out on top of the 250cc Amateur class on Saturday, beating Cheza to the line. He also beat Cheza to the line in the 505cc Amateur final on Saturday. This time, however, it was for second, behind Myers. Another young charger, Charlie Italia, didn't fare quite as well, crashing heavily on Saturday and having to sit out Sunday with a concussion. Canadian fast guy Dominic Michaud was also involved. Todd Pekins made it an unfortunate trio going down in turn two. None of the riders were seriously injured, although Michaud was also done for the weekend. Michigan Expert Brian Vincent was the "money man" this weekend. After some not so dominating performances in his heat races, Vincent got it all together when the money was on the line. Vincent entered four Pro·c1ass main events on the weekend and won them all. His fourth and final victory, Sunday's Open Pro main event, may have been his toughest win. Nick Evans led the most laps in Sunday's final, but Vincent got around the smooth·riding Ohioan just after taking the white flag and held on to win the final race of the weekend and truck home the biggest chunk of cash back to Michigan. The flat-track racing fraternity enjoyed a successful weekend of competition but suffered through a personal tragedy early on Saturday. Part·time racer and full-time husband and father Nelson Mazurkiewicz of Toledo, Ohio, suffered fatal injuries after a tum-three heat· race crash. Aboard his Yamaha thumper in the Heavyweight Vintage class, Mazurkiewicz "overcooked" it upon entry into tum three. Up to that point, Mazurkiewicz was riding hard in an effort to overcome a last· place start. Riding in the cushion sideways and smoothly, rooster tail flying, Mazurkiewicz represented the best this sport had to offer. His determined effort conjured up memories of some of the greats who have graced this clas· sic Ohio cushion track in days gone by. All eyes were on Mazurkiewicz as he raced from the back to the front of the pack. Mazurkiewicz's low· side crash in tum three ended his charge and put him into the bales and through the fence. Mazurkiewicz passed away a short time later during transportation to a hospital. A generous collection was taken up among those in attendance for the family of this brave racer. God speed, Nelson Mazurkiewicz. Hardin County Fairgrounds Kenton, Ohio Results: .June 1-2, 2002 Saturday 50: I. Tyler WhItKott~ (KTM); 2. Jorden Mol1l (Yam); 3. Dono· van Cox (Yam); 4.
