Spring Creek MX Super Series
Rounds 2-3: Spring Creek MX
Keeney, Kowalik
Conquer the Creek
iber riders were on hand on both days. Cory
Keeney was on top on Sunday in both the
125cc A and 250cc A classes on his Pro
Action/Cannon Power Suzuki. Monday would
see YZ rider Eric Kowalik on top after finishing
second and seventh overall on Sunday. The
next round of the series, round four, will take
place on June 23 and will be sponsored
by Cannon Power Sports; it will be a Suzuki
contingency race.
A total of 953 entrants made up the line for
Sunday - almost as many as showed up for
round one at Spring Creek.
In the first moto of the 250cc A class, Millville master Bruce Gates proved that, well into
his 30s, he still has what it takes to get around
the challenging Spring Creek course, even
with 35 other fast guys on the line. The former
Pro national-level rider, who was racing Pro
when most of his competitors in this class
were just getting out of diapers, flat out
spanked everyone in the first moto on his
2001 CR250. Nate Broughton put in a solid

Spring Creek held a racing doubleheacjer on
Memorial Day weekend, and it proved once
again to be a first-class two days of motocross
racing. More than 2000 motocross riders
enjoyed the course.
The weekend sponsors of the series included Trimble's Cycle of Austin, Minnesota, the
nation's third-oldest Honda dealer, on Sunday;
and Pepsi of Rochester was the sponsor for
Monday. Numerous free products were given
away to racers by both Trimble's and Pepsi,
making the trip to Spring Creek even more
enjoyable. The course itself held up excellentIy, even though 2000 riders pounded it over
three days (including Saturday's practice), but
that was in large part because of the long
hours of work throughout the weekend by
John Martin and the High Winders group.
The A classes featured some of the best
racing in the Midwest, as some national-cal-

ride to finish second in moto one on his
CR450F, with Keeney third, Kowalik fourth,
and Mike Kann, who last week qualified for the
Pro national at Hangtown, took fifth. Jake Gottas, who is making a comeback after two
years on the sidelines due to injuries, placed
sixth.
In the second mota, Gates went down and
out of the race, while Keeney emerged from
the pack like a man on a mission to take a
commanding win for the moto and overall
wins. Last year's District 23 champ, KTMmounted Scott Jendro, placed an impressive
second after a first-moto 14th, with Broughton
third and Todd Fletcher of Renner, South
Dakota, fourth. Kyle Love placed fifth and
Gottas was a consistent sixth.
The results of the first 125cc A moto were
thrown out due to multiple rider infractions.
In the second moto, Keeney took the win.
Kowalik took second, with Mike Luoma third
on a well-worn 2001 CR125. Kann placed
fourth, and Broughton rounded out the top five
in the 33-rider class.
A slightly pared-down field of racers (at
695, still a huge amount) stuck around for
Monday's event. Kowalik looked almost like a
different racer, as he proved to be the dominant force in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes, while Keeney was a no-show on the day.
Kowalik, from Iron River, Wisconsin, won
those A classes, going 1- 1 and 1-1.
In the 250cc A class, Kowalik won the first
moto in front of Kann in second, Gottas in
third, Broughton in fourth and Jendro in fifth.
Gottas led moto two briefiy on his YZ250
until Kann took the lead in the sand wash,
only to have Kowalik take the lead before the
end of the first lap. Kann's Suzuki went down
and out with a mechanicZlI problem at
midrace, and Kowalik went on for an easy
mota and overall win. Jendro put in a solid
ride to take second in this mota, and that was
enough to give him second overall. Broughton
was third, Gottas was fourth and Bobby
Widman was fifth.
Monday's 125cc A contest was once again
the Kowalik show, as he scored a 1-1 tally in
the 21-rider field. Kann was the bridesmaid,
finishing second in both motos. In moto one,
Jendro showed flashes of speed to take third,
only to place 11th in the second moto.
Broughton took third overall with a 6-3 tally,
and Luoma was fourth overall with a 5-4
score. Brett Ohland placed fourth in the first
moto and sixth in the second to take fifth
overall.

Ohio Pro-Am Half Mile Series
Hardin County Fairgrounds
Triwnph BE Tragedy
at Kenton Half Mile
By CRAIG
GRISMORE
KENTON, OH, JUNE 1-2
Riders young and not so young converged on
the Hardin County Fairgrounds with dreams of
Ohio cushion-track glory. The Triangle
MC-promoted event was the second Pro-Am
half mile doubleheader in Ohio in as many
weeks. The facility has always been popular
with the cushion specialists of the sport, both
past and present.
Riders such as former National number
holder Jack Warren of Millington, Michigan,
rode Kenton back in his heyday as a Pro and
