row riders Hansen and Sherman moving up through the pack. On lap three, McAfee hit a hole and went wide while Hansen dived underneath for the lead. Meanwhile, Sherman took Van Zuyen for third. On the final lap, Hansen pulled away from McAfee for the win. McAfee took second, with Sherman third, Fennessey fourth, Marty Shefts fifth, Carson Shefts sixth, Hunter seventh, and Van Zuyen eighth. into trenches as the rain-soaked terrain began to show sigos of distress. Though the ruts were not "China Syndrome" material, suffice it to say they proved to be challenging. Aside from the ruts, the course was actually starting to improve with each lap. The slimy mud was starting to "tack up." With only four DNFs from the AA, A and B ranks, these racers proved to all of the frozen spectators and pit crews that they were there to race. Hats off to the Highwinder Club for making the most out of what old Mamma Nature had dealt them and making a very "raceable" District 23 Hare Scrambles event. As for the remarks at the rider's meeting made by the crafty Mike Quinnin regarding a sighting of "Johnny Martin personally drying off the course with a hair dryer" - well, they seemed a little farfetched. He was never spot· ted anywhere on the course with a hair dryer and generator strapped to his bike. Results 80: 1. Ben Berquist; 2. F. Cardes. 250: 1. s.wyer Shefts; 2. Ron Fenner; 3. Pdt: Berquist. Honey Lake Motocross Park Lash Whips to Win at Mother's Day Classic Results By CASHEL HACKLAND MILFORD, CA, MAY 12 Honey Lake Motocross Park puts on quality events, and this beautiful spring day was the setting for the first Mother's Day Classic. To prove how important moms are, Larry and Use Wosick made sure each mother received free gate entry and a carnation upon arrival; the 300 camations were donated by a local business, Susanville Florist. Kenny Lash continues to dominate the 250cc Pro class at Honey Lake, and he was again untouchable in both his motos. In his second moto of the day, he barely managed to hang on to the holeshot, as Matt Bussell came bearing down on Lash in the first tum. Bussell, however, couldn't keep up the pace and placed an admirable third. Sven Stillmock was back, and this time he was more than ready for the demanding uphill and challenging downhill. Stillmock, who rides the track with the "old school" altitude it deserves, placed second. Nick Baugh also showed up with renewed determination and placed fourth after an eight-overall finish two weeks before. Stillmock is also currently contesting the Four·Stroke National series. a round of which will be held at Honey Lake on July 6 and 7. Of late, many contestants of that series have been up at the track, taking the opportunity of race days to get in a little extra practice. In the always·entertaining kids races, Tucker Larrieu metamorphosed into a riding machine in his second moto and held on to the front position the entire race, resulting in a first-overall finish. Local youngster Tyler Irwin put in some noteworthy efforts to take home second, and Geiger McElroy of Silver Springs placed third. In the 60cc (0-9) class, Aaron Siminoe of Reno, Nevada, took first place on his brandnew Kawasaki and, in his words, he "couldn't believe how well he did." The 2002 season will likely see Siminoe and his brother Ty become strong competitors in their respective classes in the HLMXP Summer Series. O/A: I. CraIg Hotasek (KTM): 2. Kyle Nelson (KTf'I): 3. Millville Hare Scrambles: Craig Holasek was the overall winner of the hare scrambles event in Millville, Minnesota, The days classes were very competitive, and many a motocrosser contested double classes. Yamaha-mounted Bryar Perry of Shasta Lake made a clean sweep of both the 80cc Intermediate class and the Supermini class. As usual, everyone went home happy (and a lillie sore)! The Suzuki Factory team showed up on Tuesday for two days of testing; they were well-received by the local kids, as they made sure to be pen-and-poster-ready for their eager fans. Travis Pastrana passed judgment on Honey Lake. "Your track rocks!" he enthused. Results Ty~ 50 (4.6): 1. Toc:kt!r Larrieu (Pol): 2. Geiger McElroy (Pol); 3. Irwin (Han): 4. Austin Ching (KTM); 5. Fast Fridays Speedway Brant Borrows a Couple of Wins By M. SOBER AUBURN, CA, MAY 17 Long-removed Northern California Junior Speedway rider "Suicide" Scotty Brant did the almost unimaginable. In the second week of the Fast Fridays 2002 season, he won both the Handicap and Scratch main events - riding a borrowed motorcycle! "I really gotta thank Bobby Hedden and Bill Warnock for these trophies tonight," beamed Brant after the race. "They loaned me a bike for the mains after mine crapped out, and that thing was dialed in." Brant also benefited from some additional luck in the Handicap main when early race leader and zero-yardage rider Ivan Severt threw a chain in the front straightaway midway through the race. Severt's misfortune allowed 30-yard-line starter Robert Curry to take over the lead, which he soon relinquished to the high-flying Brant. Once Brant took over, he was spot-on perfect to the checkers. "F1yin'" Mike Faria got past Curry in the last turn to claim second, and fourth went to Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden. In the Scratch Consi, last week's winner, Alan Christian, drifted into the starting tapes and was disqualified, paving the way for former Junior Champion Bryan Yarrow's victory over Tommy Hedden. However, the night was much kinder to another member of the Christian family. Alan's oldest son, Richard, in just the second race of his Speedway career, ran away in the Division Three main and posted his first win. This was just the first step in the family's goal to be the first father-and-son team to appear together in a U.S. National Speedway Championship race. Greg Hooton Jr. pulled off a milestone vic· tory of his own when he claimed his first Division Two main win after moving up to the 500cc machines from last year's Junior ranks. The Youth division belonged mostly to the Becerra family. Jesse won ahead of Tori Hub· bard in Division Three, and his brother R.J. finished first in Division Two. Reigning Youth champion T.J. Fowler took the Division One victory after working his way through the pack from the 50-yard line. In the Scratch main, Brant drew the inside pole position, with Bart "Simpson" Bast, Bobby Hedden and Chad Felicio in starting grids two through four. Brant, Hedden and Bast ali entered the first turn all together. Brant's inside advantage held through the tum; Bast and Hedden were wide and immedi· ately in a battle for second. Siminoe was first overall. . Holasek Hauls in Millville By PAUL BLOYER MILLVILLE, MN, MAY 12 Craig Holasek pulled off the overall win over fellow KTM rider and District 23 2001 Enduro and Hare Scrambles AA champion Kyle Nelson. With increasingly deteriorating course conditions. Holasek's years of National Enduro experience paid off; He had a 31-second advantage over Nelson after the 90-minute ballie. Inclement weather greeted 158 hardy AA, A, Band C riders, but, being die-hard Minnesotans, all soldiered on and made the most out of the day. Johnny Martin's Highwinder crew gave the approximately 7 -mile course as much attention as possible, rerouting some sections and grading the National motocross track's starting area, which was inches deep in standing water and mud. The Highwinder boys also decided, for the riders' benefit, to shorten the AA, A and B race to 90 minutes, rather than the normal two hours. (There were no complaints.) Drawing first blood for the day on the shorter course were the C-c1ass racers, who were wondering if they were being used for rut fodder for the AA, A and B racers who would follow them after their one-houf race. Other than some interesting techniques on how not to attack a steep, muddy uphill, the C, Youth and Women's racers seemed to be hanging in there. By the third lap, most of the course was drying up considerably. Ken Papa took the overall C-c1ass win with a nice ride and a two-minute-and-17 -second win over fellow 250cc C racer Tony Harvieus, who ended up first in class. The seven AA riders were ready for their dead-engine start, to be followed two minutes later by 39 A-class riders. Spread out in twominute intervals behind the A class were the 45 B-c1ass racers. By the second lap, ruts were developing cue' e n eVIl's JUNE 19, 2002 87
