The big gathering had a lot to do with the event being a dual-sanctioned race, as points were paid out to both CRA and USRA (Utah Sportsman Riders Association) members. Nearly 600 riders made the trek to Price and did battle on a challenging and fairly technical II-mile course over desert terrain that featured a little bit of everything, such as tight and twisty ravines, ridge trails, short but steep hillclimbs (and drop-offs), wide-open dirt roads, and a fun motocross section. But the word of the day was - dust. Some of the ravine sections were engulfed by the choking dust as the riders Zigzagged through the gorges and silt-filled washes. However, after the riders became spread out, usually after just the first lap, the dust became less of a factor. One of the closest races of the day came in the Senior Over 50 class, where Gas Gas-mounted Randy lindsey edged out Kawasaki rider Butch Odom by 11 seconds after nearly an hour and a half of racing. One of the largest classes of the day, with 22 entrants, was the 250cc Amateur class, but it was Yamaha rider Darrin Tuckett who was all T 86 JUNE 19, 2002' eye I • alone and leading the way at the finish. He finished nearly three minutes ahead of his nearest class rival, c.J. Crim, on a Honda. Crim crossed the finish line just 20 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher, Kawasaki jockey Nick Shurts. Since starting positions for Sunday's Pro race are determined by lap times on Saturday, many of the top Pros competed in Saturday's AAclass races. One of those was the eventual Pro-class winner, Ty Davis. Davis took top overall honors in the Vet, Master and Senior race, but he did have a scare when his YZ250 ran out of gas on the last lap. He managed to borrow some gas and get going again before Suzuki-mounted Robert Naughton could catch him. Naughton would've caught Davis had he not run out of gas as well, as did Team Suzuki rider Rodney Smith and Steve Hatch. Naughton scrounged up some fuel to finished third overall, behind Davis and Honda rider Dax Billings. KTM rider Rick Daniel finished fourth overall, while Master Expert-class winner Chuck Sun rounded out the top five overall. Motocrosser Jeff Willoh tried his hand at off-road racing at Price and did quite well. The Honda rider finished second overall in the 250cc/Open Amateur/Expert/ AA race, a few minutes behind Russell Pearson and a couple of minutes ahead of Northern California racer Craig Wesner. Joey Lanza finished fourth. eN n • _ S Price, Utah Results: May 25, 2002 (Round 3 of &1 WMN; 1. Kelly Vancey (KTM); 2. Carol Williams (YlIm); 3. Brendll JlInkowski (Yam); 4. Amber Naughton (Suz); 5. Kurt KearsleyjKevln Engle (Kaw), Salmon Valley Speedway Hansen Hooks a Salmon Victory By BAMBI McAFEE SALMON, ID, MAY 4 The first of the 2002 Salmon Valley Speedway flat-track races was a good one. It was held at the Lemhi County Fairgrounds. A new track surface was taken from the half-mUe track and laid on the quarter·mile and eighth·mile tracks. Marty Shefts and Tom Sherman were the track prep men, and they did an excellent job with the new surface. The SOcc, 125cc, 250cc, Open Pro, and Speedway motorcycle classes were run, as usual (along with three car classes). Despite cloudy skies, a good crowd showed up for the Saturday night races under the lights. The first heat of the ISRAfWlldside Sports Yamaha-sponsored races saw Montana's Brendan "Wildman" Fennessey, just coming back from a broken ~nkle last season, take control on the new surface and place first in heat one on his bikeboneyard.com-backed laydown Jawa. Marty "Madman" Shefts took second on his Coach Works Jawa. Third went to Shane "Captain Sideways" McAfee, on his Cycle Sleds & Saws Jawa. Fourth went to "Crazy" Carson Shefts, also on a Coach Works Jawa. In heat two, Trent Hansen took his Herb Worford "War Pony" Racing Jawa to first place. He was followed by Tom "The Shermlnator" Sherman, aboard his Sherman Construction Jawa. Third place went to "Flyin'" Mark Van Zuyen, and fourth went to former East Coast speedway rider Todd Hunter, on his Weslake. Hunter now makes his home in Montana, riding the Intermountain Speedway Racers Association (Idaho and Montana) circuit. The Speedway main event saw eight riders in two rows dice for the evening's first-place trophy and honors. McAfee shot from gate four to lead the first lap of the main, with Van Zuyen in second, followed by six more "Iongwinter crazed" riders in hot pursuit. On lap two, McAfee was still In the lead, with back-
