in the Pro standings with eight races to go. Smith GogglesjBridgestone/Answersponsored Bryan Miller grabbed second place at that same mudhole on the fourth lap, earning his highest finish in the 2 1/2 years he has raced as a Pro with TCCRA. "I'm very happy with this finish," said the 19-year-oJd Miller. "I've been racing with this club for 10 years, starting at 9, when I raced a 60cc in the Mini Amateur class. My family and I live in Wichita Falls, Texas, so every race is a haul for us. The trip goes faster when you have a good day!" The Ladies Amateur class had another new face at the top when 14-year-old Jessica Callahan got her best finish to date, with second place. "Shay [Bolling] and I were going back and forth throughout the entire race," Callahan recounted. "I went down near the end of the last lap and she got me - this time." Another new face in the class is Joyce Needum, who is also in her first full season and has made her way to second place in the points standings with consistent finishes. Both Callahan and Needum got the bug for TCCRA while racing for the first time in Texas Off-Road Racing Organization (TORO) events. TORO is a new program that very successfully launched this past winter, and both Callahan and Needum did a couple of races with the TORO series before starting their first full seasons with TCCRA. There was some afternoon excitement in the Over 50 Amateur class, as six men took to the line in one of the biggest races this season for that class. At 52, Steven McCunn has been apprehensive about racing in the mud, but he decided to give it a shot - and it was a good thing he did. "I was third off the line and took over second pretty quick," McCunn said. "I guess the key for me is that every time I came around to the mud pit, I had a clean line, with no one in front of me. I just had a clear shot and plowed right through." In just his second year with the club, McCunn was so excited about his win that when he was first contacted by phone after the race, his wife, Sherry, said, "Oh, he'll have to call you back - he's out bragging about it right now!" The club heads back out to the country for its next round, presented by the Red River Dirt Riders in Crafton, Texas, near Bridgeport. Wegner kept charging through the latter part of the race, finishing second on the day, behind Gallt. Lansing Cycle-sponsored Corey Calkins was the next rider to come through scoring for third place, as the KTM pilot is using his consistency to stay in the hunt for the overall championship. Steve Willey rode his Kawasaki to a fourth-place finish despite tangling with some trees. Barclay held on for fifth place overall after running with the leaders early, and Husky rider Robbie Cribbs followed in sixth. Even though he did not finish his last lap due to a nasty crash, Parlin earned seventh-place points for the day. Parlin attempted an extremely technical step-down jump and came up short, sending the series points leader over the bars hard. This crash, added to his earlier get-off on the second lap, sent the KTM pilot home to mend his wounds. The top placing non-Expert rider was again David Allen Racing-sponsored Clint Hammerle, who earned the Vet-class victory and eighth overall. What made Hammerle's ride more impressive is that he started in the very last three-hour row, putting him nine minutes behind the first class, which resulted in heavy traffic for the first several laps. Rick Kent again won the battle in the Senior class, over Honda-mounted Mick Bushong. The two Over 40 riders have been engaging in some serious battles over the last two rounds, with Yamaha rider Kent prevailing for the class win, earning ninth overall. Bushong came through scoring less than a minute back, earning second in the class and 10th overall. CN Callahan (Han); 3. Jessica Magee (Yom); 4. Joyce Needum (Kaw); 5. Laurie Parrish (Kaw). AMA District 14 Michigan Hare Scrambles Series Round 3: Battle Creek Motorcycle Club Gallt Assaults Battle Creek Bv MARK SPORE BATTLE CREEK, M1, MAY 19 T eam Green Kawasaki-supported Chris Gallt took advantage of a break in the GNCC series to compete at round three of the Michigan Hare Scrambles Series in Battle Creek. After early pressure from some of the series regulars, Gallt (who won the Michigan series in 1999 and 2000) simply pulled away, winning the race with just under two minutes to spare. Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, there was a large turnout for the Battle Creek event. The course routed riders through some gnarly, whooped-out woods sections, which were combined with some tighter, more-technical trails. The track also featured a sandy motocross section, which provided some good action for the many spectators that came out to brave the IIlIttJe Creek MDtan:ycle Chili Battle Creek, Michigan Kosulb: M.y 19, 2002 IRaund 3J O/A: 1. The large amount of rain prior to the event provided excellent traction, although the track did develop a large amount of chop, which made the course extremely rough toward the end of the three-hour event. The start of the Expert class featured some tight racing, as four riders completed the first lap within 20 seconds of each other. Yamaha-mounted Aaron Wegner came through the scoring chute with the lead, with Gallt, KTM-mounted Corey Parlin, and Honda pilot Scott Barclay close behind. Parlin and Barclay would soon fall off the pace, as both riders had painful crashes induced by the rough course. That left Wegner and Gallt to sort things out, and it was quite a battle for the next two hours. Gallt took over the lead on the second lap, but Wegner kept him in sight aboard his YZ125.
