Dina Daze Vintage Motorcycle Weekend Thurston County ORV Park (Left! Grayson Hart dominated the 18th annual Dino Daze Vintage Motocross event at Thurston County ORV Park, posting the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 30 victories. (Right) Top Open-class riders Jim Row (SlR) and Chris Clark (110) battled during the Open Two-Stroke A final in McCleary, Washington; Row took the win. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV LIGHT MCCLEARY, WA, JUNE 1-2 regon's Grayson Hart proved again that he's the fastest Vintage motocrosser from the Northwest. This year, Hart furthered his mark over last year after winning the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 30 classes during the motocross program of the 18th annual Dino Daze Vintage Motorcycle Weekend - the Northwest's premier vintage motorcycle event - held at Thurston County ORV Park. Both the motocross and shorttrack events went off without a glitch, as the top performer on the host Tacoma Motorcycle Club's 1/8thmile oval, Del Schnitzer, was one of the four double-class winners on Sunday, the others being current AMA Pro-Sport rider Kyle Ragsdale, former AMA Expert Dick Wascher, and current AMA Pro Keith Anderson. Honda-mounted Jeff Pugh pulled the trigger fastest to lead the 125cc A final, followed by Josh James, Joe Casey and Hart. However, Hart was qUick to pass both Casey and James and then narrowed the gap to Pugh. Two laps later, Hart outjumped Pugh to take command. Pugh then kept the pressure on to the checkers to finish a close second. James was a solid third, while Tony McFarland finished fourth, slightly ahead of Casey, who joined Hart as a winner of one of the two early-morning 125cc qualifiers. Hart didn't have any time to rest between his 125 and 250cc A mains. He unleashed a holeshot in the 250cc final, followed by 1974 YZ250mounted Dallas Nyblod, Casey, Randy Brown and Husky rider Tom Owens. The much-anticipated HartlNyblod battle failed to materialize, as Nyblod dropped off the pace early on and Hart opened up the day's largest lead on the field for his second win of the day. Casey got @ around a fading Nyblod late in the moto to post his best finish of the day, followed by Nyblod, Brown and Owens. Chris Clark pushed Hart for the first two laps of the Over 30 final, but Hart held on to win. Hart clicked off a successive string of flawless laps and built a four-second lead on Clark, who recorded his second secondplace finish of the day. (He trailed Jim Row in the Open Two-Stroke A final earlier). Yamaha rider Tim Williams worked through the field to finish third, followed by Steve Row and Owens. Richard Giboney, who rode a 1965 Matchless-powered Rickman, came up a bike length short from posting a double-class win. After impressively winning the Premier Four-Stroke A main, he charged through the field of Over 50 contestants at a blistering pace, moving up to challenge BSA rider Rick Downing on the final lap. Downing, though, gave it all he had and narrowly edged Giboney at the finish. Ron Pomeroy has either come up just short of a victory or DNF'd in previous Dino Daze events. This year, Pomeroy did a little of both. After successfully winning the Four-Stroke Almost-Vintage qualifier, Pomeroy looked as though the long winless drought would come to an end in the main event. Pomeroy, however, slid out in one of the freshly watered corners just after taking the lead, and what could have been his first Dino Daze win quickly evaporated. "It was dry, then muddy," a bewildered Pomeroy said. "I slid out, got back up and noticed that the clutch lever was broken off. I slammed it in gear and it [the Dick Mann Yamaha TI500l got away from me again, so I called it quits." Pomeroy's final chance at a victory came in the Over 40 final, but it was Nyblod who got a jump on the field and maintained the lead to the finish. Pomeroy's ride was a solid one, though; it was just that Nyblod had everything going his way in the six-lap final and ended his day on a high note. Andy James finished third, trailed by CZ rider Neil Giertsen, Keith Webster, Pugh and Brown. Nick Smith posted a win in the first of the two Premier Four-Stroke qualifiers, while Schnitzer posted a win in the second preliminary. The two went head to head in the A main; Schnitzer jumped out front at the unleashing and then fended off challenges by the 1961 Harley-Davidson 750-mounted Smith for his first win of the day. Tom Terrant rode his 1957 BSA to the final podium position, while BSA Gold Star jockey Tim Marek, Ron Predmore and AJS rider Alan Moore filled out the top six. Schnitzer also won the Brakeless class. LaFaye McCarver, who rode a 1940 Indian, took the lead at the start, followed by Oregon's Chuck Hodson's Triumph 750 and BSAmounted Schnitzer. By lap two, Schnitzer had the lead, and he kept it for the remainder. McCarver finished second, followed by Hodson, HarleyDavidson-mounted Dan Dickinson, Predmore and Ron Lacey. Ragsdale burned the competition in his Open Twin and Almost Vintage A main victories. On a 1968 Norton 750, Ragsdale trailed Tarrant and Mike Budschat during the opening lap, but both Ragsdale and Triumph rider Dale Parks moved up by lap two. Parks then led for several laps, until Ragsdale took command. Ragsdale held off Parks for the win; Tarrant, Kam Todd, Moore, Dickinson and Triumph-mounted Marvin Schultz rounded out the field. Anderson devoured the competition in his Almost-Vintage Open and Open Four-Stroke main-event wins. Riding a 1971 Honda 500, Anderson first won the Almost-Vintage (19741980) class, followed by Tom Miller and Don Harris. Anderson came right back one race later to decimate the Open Four-Stroke final, again using the pole position to easily win. Larry Burtness and Ben Bushnell finished second and third. eN (Hon); 3.
