O'Neal was Injured while pre-running and only rode a few yards off the start before tumlng his Hondas over to his co-riders. Class 40 champion, left his hospital bed at Scripps Hospital in San Diego and started the race in both classes, neck brace, a patch over his eye and all. He only rode less than 25 yards before handing the bikes off to his teammates. The Class 30 O'Neal Team was made up of Fred Willert, Mike Barnhill, Brian Schmuckle and Tim Morton, a late addition, and they finished sixth overall in 10:58:46. They, how- ever, were pushed all day by the Scott Donlavey, Gary Ward, Greg Tracy and Darryl Hambleton XR650R, which ended up second in class, less than two minutes back, making this the closest finish of the race. The winning Class 40 O'Neal Team, made up of Tim Withers, Jon Ortner, and former National Enduro Champion Kevin Hines, came in fourth overall (motorcycle) in 10:40: 13, finishing over two hours (Left) Craig Smith (shownl. Christopher Blais and Aaron Tuck teamed up to finish a respectable third overall and third in Class 22. (Below! (Right) The Martin BejaranolDayton Raper team took the Class 21 (250ccl win and finished 15th overall. ahead of class rivals Dave Simpson and Dan Closson, aboard a Yamaha WR426F. Gary Gluff soloed on an XR650R to finish third in class. Class 40 contestants Sam and Gene Dempsey, Kenny Hayden and Doug Hiel called it a day after their XR was smashed by a buggy while it sat on the side of the trail with chain problems. Before the start, O'Neal said, "I'm extremely disappointed not being able to ride." Afterward, he thanked both teams "for doing a great job. I'm sorry I couldn't add anything to it." In the Sportsman class, just 30 minutes separated the top five Sportsman teams in the last 100 miles of the race. Moizes Gollaz, Ivan Ramirez and Fernando Canto ended up coming out on top of that battle to take 10th overall and first Sportsman in a time of 11 :23:42.
