Competition Park: Richard Pollock (59) was the Pro maln-event winner at the last-ever flat-track race at Competition Park in San Jacinto, California. Jim Rosa (behind Pollock) placed fourth. of activities. By 5:50 p.m. the racing began on the well-groomed oval, and the riders completed the heats without a mishap. At 8:40 it was on to the main events! In the Bomber class, heat-race winner Dave Johnson picked up at the front after a restart, over Richard Hutchins. Down the back straight, George Fox took second. With two laps remaining, Fox stuck a wheel under Johnson and took the lead away. On the final go-around, lapped traffic came into play and Johnson couldn't mount an attack on Fox, so Fox picked up the win, with Johnson in second. The Brakeless class had a battered and bruised Joe Pape in the line-up. Sporting brand-new orange-and-black Harley leathers, Pape broke them in "hard" in his heat and was questionable for the races. Off the line, Chris Apple took off - so much so, they had to do it again. This time David Brown led the pack. Ruben Malaguarnero was second, with Jeff Apple running third. On lap two, Brown pulled out with mechanical woes. Meanwhile, Jeff took over at the front, while his brother Chris moved into second, displacing Malaguarnero to third. By halfway, Chris' Triumph began to smoke. Jeff went on to win, with Chris staying out in second and Malaguamero third. One of the most exciting races' of the night was the Pro class. Seven combatants lined up, with a hurt Ian Foulds giving it his all. Foulds fell last week at Willow Springs and injured his back. On this night. he took five Advil and sucked it up. On the first attempt, Jeff Johnson jumped the line; he was sent back to the third row. Jimmy Wood was having bike-handling problems and took to the outside of the front row. On the restart, Richard Pollock shot from pole position into the lead. Travis Petton was second, Jim Rosa third and Johnson, from row three, was up to fourth by tum two. Starting lap two, Johnson passed Rosa for third. On lap four, Johnson put a wheel under Petton and took second. By halfway, Johnson was glued to Pollock. Both riders turned 20second lap times (the fastest of the night). For six more laps, Pollock rode smart. smooth and consistent - and never gave Johnson an opportunity at the lead. At the checkers, it was Pollock. Johnson and a distant Petton. The future of flat-rack racing lies with the Youth classes. In the 85cc main event, banging bars off the line were heat-race winner and National Champion Andy Wood and Devin Booher. Wood took the lead coming out of tum two and never looked back. On lap three. this Southland Racing Yl85 rider turned a 23second-flat lap time, and Wood went on to take victory over a fading 250 AM:. 1. Alex Wood: 2. Frank Aragakl: 3. Brad Rudy; 4. Las Vegas Motor Speedway Nanney Doesn't Baby 'em By DICK GOODWIN LAS VEGAS, NV, MAY 11 Club MX kicked off its Saturday night summer 2002 "Beat the Heat" motocross series with round one of eight at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on May 11. Cole "The Ripper" Nanney wanted to start off on the right foot, and that he did, grabbing both ends of the 50cc Stock (7-8) class. Nanney led everyone in the 50cc Stock combined race off the line as the gate dropped for moto one. Kingman, Arizona's Bobby Harding and 50cc (4-6) hotshoe Jaiger Snow were right behind him. Shane Lant quickly took over third. Then Cody Howard emerged from the pack to scrap over second. Howard finally shook off Harding and set out after Nanney. Cody edged closer to Cole until, on the last lap, they were nose to tail. Nanney held on for the win, with Lant sailing across in third. Hardin blasted out in front of Nanney and Howard to start the second half. Cole jumped into the lead and took off, opening up some daylight immediately. The intense battle for second between Hardin, Howard and Lant went back and forth for a couple of laps until Howard finally powered past in the whoops. but by then Nanney was long gone. Nanney flashed through the pipes with the win - and the overall 50cc Stock (7 -8) title - while Howard nailed down second and Lant bested Hardin for third. Further back in the field, Snow came from bebind to top Jeffrey Willson and Brandon Russ in the 50cc (4-6) division. The 85cc Stock combined class was also in action on Saturday night. Dominic Desimone, racing in the 85cc (12-13) division, topped all riders as he rolled out his"A" game for round one. Tony Caputo shot out in front of fellow 85cc (7-11) competitor Michael Stark and 85cc (14-16) hotshoe Josh Morast as race action got under way. Prince Kapahulehua made some early moves to fight into second. DeSimone was also on the move and, after the shuffling in the whoops was through, he had landed in third. When Caputo bobbled, Kapahulehua took over the point, with Desimone inches behind. Desimone made his move on lap three, taking over the lead for good to put round one in the bank. Kapahulehua held off the recovered Caputo for second. Kapahulehua just nosed out Caputo as the second half got under way .Kurtis Gierer, an 8xc (12-13) rider, was in the mix up front, and DeSimone was working his way forward once again. He passed Gierer and then closed on Caputo. After a track-long, bar-to·bar duel, Desimone tripled in the back section to take over second. He caught Kapahulehua and passed Prince on the west side to complete his charge to the front. Desimone nailed down win number two, and the overall 85cc Stock (12-13) crown, ahead of Gierer and Austin ParT. Caputo passed Kapahulehua to take the 8xc (7-11) class overall, with Shaun Harrison and Derek Rogers in third and fourth. Timothy Kerr bested Josh Morast in the 85cc (14-16) division.
