and Martorana third. Martorana was fast man away in the final and led lap one but from there on it was all Beaulac. Martorana fought off advances by first Poole's Harley-Davidson-backed Scott Sehl, then Steve Beattie and lastly Evans. Martorana scored a well-deserved second place. Evans remained in third, with Beattie fourth. Picotte was the victim of motor problems and recorded a DNF. Buddy Ford, the event organizer, wisely inserted a 505cc class in the race program to accommodate visiting American riders and Canadians who compete in the new AMA classification. The new class provided perhaps the best racing of the night, as Andy Springsteen, Rob Williams and MM Skidshoes' Douggie Lawrence ran as one through their qualifier and final. Springsteen scored a narrow victory in the heat race, with Williams second and Lawrence alongside in third. In the final, this trio of friends again delighted the 4200-strong audience with lap after lap of handlebar-to-handlebar action. Lawrence drew from his heat-race experience and hounded Springsteen till "mini Springer" made a slight mistake and Lawrence capitalized on it. Lawrence won by half a wheel, with Williams, who had followed in Lawrence's vortex, in second, and Springsteen shadowing in third. Lawrence's victory was very wellreceived, he being the lone Canadian in the seven-rider field. The Expert 250cc race was Kurt Biegger's property, as the multi-time National Lightweight champ was untouchable. Rookie Expert Don Taylor made an impressive yellow-plate debut, riding the Titan Honda to second, with Marc Lebeau pressing in third. Sonny Martorana, on a night away from his budding car-racing career, put in a great ride in the 600cc Intermediate contest, taking the Leo Harley-Davidson to a wire-to-wire win. Infinity Trucking's Taylor once again impressed with a splendid second-place finish in his first ride in the class. Jeff Swanson rounded out the podium. eN HippDdrame de Trais Rivieres Trais Rivieres, Quebec, Canede Results: Mey 11, 2002 lRound 11 P/W (5·\0): 1. Harley Dunn (KTM); 2. Alex Cefon (KlIw); 3. Pacific Racing Organization Northwest National Spring Series Rounds 7-8: Richland ORV Park Moore and the Kids Bv LEE LiVESEV RICHLAND, WA, MAY 11-12 eteran Pro Dan Moore showed the youngsters how to ride in the sand on Saturday. Racing only his second race in eight months, Moore said young riders Ryan Abrigo, Jerry Lymburner and Brandon Thomas were all over him, but Moore had consistency and experience working for him. It seems kids just don't respect their elders, because they took a couple of motos away. Moore got the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto and managed to stay in front until Abrigo caught him late. The second moto looked the same until Thomas moved the 450cc thumper past Moore for first overall. Moore took second overall in the 250cc Pro class and won both 125cc Pro motos, with Lymburner, Abrigo, Jared Mickelson and Royce DeVol keeping him working for it. V 56 JUNE 12, 2002' II: U II: • ... Some 585 riders turned out on Mother's Day weekend. Pacific Racing Organization's Multi-Line Design Team had Richland's ORV track in the best shape ever. Moore said it felt like a national MX track. Factory contingency money from Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki had riders working hard in every eligible moto on Saturday. Honda had money for the Red Riders on Sunday as well for the series final. PRO's Michele Versteeg made sure there were carnations and cards for all moms. The PRO mouthpieces helped riders say "hi" to moms from the tower. Safety was ensured by the fine medic crew of Jeremy Peake and Rich Bonham; they are the best. Sunday's 125cc Pro class belonged to Fairbanks Whiz Kid Lymburner. He must've learned to turn fast to avoid loose moose on the track. Abrigo kept Lymburner honest, but he just ne1lVs ~ ffi > :::; w w .... ~ ~ Richland ORV Park: Kyle Versteeg placed third on Saturday and second on Sunday In the 250cc Intermediate class at rounds seven and eight of the PRO Northwest National Spring series in Richland, Washington. couldn't match Lymburner's corner speed. DeVol-backed Mickelson and DeVol rounded out this fast group. The order was Lymburner, Abrigo, Mickelson and DeVol going one-twothree-four in both motos. Between motos, Mickelson put in wrench time in the DeVol big rig, fine-tuning suspension. Jason Zuhlke looks like he's getting ready to turn Pro. Jason took first in every moto he entered on Saturday and Sunday except the second 125cc Intermediate moto, when he fell in the first lap. Cameron Jungers gets the worstto-first award for the second time this series. Jungers went 20th in the first 60cc Beginner moto, and then first in the second moto on Saturday. On Sunday, Jungers hit it first and first. "Now you've got something else to write about me," Jungers said; this kid should be a contender when he gets consistent. Sunday's 125cc Junior contest was great, with Prentice Clark, Brock Moorehead, Jeremy Scully, AI Jakovoc and Jacob Kingenberg all battling back and forth, trading leads. Clark went 1-2 for the overall. Usually consistent Ronnie Noel shares Jungers' worst-to-first award, going 19th and third for 10th overall. Sam and Matt DeAtley and Chris and Sheri Howell put on a family show in the Supermini heats on Saturday, with Caleb Watt sneaking in for a third and a fifth. This class continues to provide some of the best racing around. The it's-never-too-Iate-to-race Over 40 Beginner class belonged to Richland chiropractor Jeff Sullivan. "Iron Doc" went I-Ion Saturday and Sunday. Byron Krogstadt rode two motos in this class, his first - and his last, scoring a sixth and a DNS. With his son Kiel off for six to nine months due to a shattered femur, Dad just couldn't stand to see the bike stand idle. Mother's Day racing was at it's best in the Women's Beginner and 80cc Beginner classes. A split-gate start put these two classes on the track together. The Oswald family turned in first-place finishes in both classes: Mom Candi took first, and her youngest son, Tanner, took first. Saturday's Women's Sportsman class featured great battles between Shirri Howell and Jenny Krick. Howell took first, but not without a battle in the berms with Krick. Sunday saw the return of local rider Kimberly Niles. Howell had an ankle injury that slowed her a little, and Krick got out in front and stayed there for first. Niles put in a solid third after trading places with Howell a couple of times. Andrew and Karen Denham provided trackside support from Skagit Powersports. The Denhams hit about 60 races a year with the big rig and don't take a dime for their work. (Oh, sure, Skagit supports their two young racers, but it's still a huge effort of love). Series sponsors Trick Racing Fuels and super-stoppers EBS brakes had contingency money on both days. Troy Lee Designs had discount coupons for some lucky riders. EVS helped keep Jason Lusier healthy with a $700 set of spankin'-new Carbon Fiber Knee Guards. Brahn Bjornstadt earned the Skagit Holeshot Award in the 125cc Beginner class on Sunday. ProX/LA Sleeve had tons of giveaways, including T-shirts, coats, and - catch this - 10 $125 top-end kits. These will be needed after two days in the sand.
