From there, come a sixth-place start and finish in third, with Brian Long taking fourth at the flag. Mark Ledesma crashed in turn 10 when he ran over a broken brake lever left there from a previous crash. Ledesma remounted to take sixth a lap behind Aaron Coulson. Ledesma's crash on Saturday was a har· binger of things to come, as he fell again on Sunday in turn two and later his bike refused to rev out, marking the end of a weekend he would rather forget. Beckman got the holeshot in the Unlimited skies but could only hold it for five laps before Martin gradually pulled away, clocking the fastest laps of the weekend. Arguably the best race of the season got under way as the summer heat was out in full force on Saturday. The mercury topped 104 degrees, but that didn't slow the Robb Martin trophy machine, as he gridded up against the GSX-R1000 of Lenny Beckman for the actionpacked GTO race. Beckman used the power of his Suzuki to take the holeshot, but Martin was right on his tail. It looked like this would be a classic race, with the big horsepower of the GSX-R1000 pitted against the nimble handling of the Yamaha R6, but It all came apart for Martin when he fell in turn four on only the second lap, Martin remounted, put his head down and, with an amazing display of riding, took over the iead with three laps to go. But a Cinderella story it was not - because Martin fell again, in the same corner, this time taking out Beck· JUNE 12, 2002' cue I e By HOMER EUBANKS RAMONA, CA. MAY 19 Cas Swift appears to like the new track design at Barona Oaks Raceway. Swift repeatedly turned in lap times under two minutes, earning the overall honors in the Supermini and BOcc Expert divisions. Another smali-bore rider with big results was Dakota Garner, who captured overall wins in the 60cc Open, 80cc (7-11) and BOcc Novice classes. The two riders were part of regular series racing action at Barona Oaks, which on this day drew 309 riders. Tommy McAdams found some serious competition in Robby Bell in the 125cc Novice division. The first moto was all McAdams' after he moved away from Hector Hernandez and Dayton Banegas, In the following mota, McAdams found himself racing with Beit. The two diced back and forth for a while, but Bell was abie to jump further and he took away the lead and eventually the win. McAdams didn't mind losing the moto, as his 1-2 efforts put him on top of the podium. Beli finished second overali, ahead of Banegas. Bell came back in the 16- to 25-year-old 125cc class and took repeat wins away from Hernandez. Three closely matched riders came out to contest the Over 40 Novice class. In the first moto, John Delfante took charge early, but both Ron Adams and Jay Laumer stayed within striking distance. Laumer changed the order around in the final mota. Laumer took charge early, with Delfante in hot pursuit. Delfante, however, realized all he had to do was stay close to Laumer for the overall. Laumer took the moto win but went second on the day, ahead of Adams. A total of 41 80cc Beginners were divided into two sections. When the dust settled, it was Curtis Frost who took the overall with repeat victories. Joey Alvarez managed second after putting in a 2·3 day. Third was Jeremy Stinett, who finished fourth but then moved up to second in the following moto. In XR50 Pro action, Brian Miller took home the big dollars with a 2-2 effort. Milier first trailed Kenny Johnson across in the first moto. and then played second fiddle to Trevor Green in the following mota. Johnson went 1-3 for second overall and Green (4-1) was third. Eric Yorba proved to be the young man to beat among the younger racers. Yorba won the Super Pee Wee class on Track One and then rode to repeat wins on Track Two in both the 50cc (7-8) Stock and Modified classes. Jackson Ryan took the second·overall slot in the Stock class after placing fifth in round one and then coming back to give Yorba a run for his money in the second moto, Tanner Camerena was second in the Modified class after he went 4·2 on the day. In the first moto, Yorba had to hoid off Nathan MacGilfrey. In the following moto, MacGilfrey wasn't abie to match his first-round performance, finishing Results Although the Prescott, Arizona, man could not "become one with his GSX-R600" (as he put it), he borrowed his Yamaha R6 back and pro· 76 Swift Moves Garner Wins fourth.
