z Cambell Park ~ 8 Root Rails Hawaii AX d Ii > By R.C. DOHAN Dayton Fairgrounds: Dennis Belingheri went unchallenged all day at the second annual Mother's Day Invitational in Dayton, Nevada, and won by over more than minutes. OAHU. HI. MAY 12 Team O'Neal-backed Joe Root was more than a tourist at this year's Hawaii Pineapple Are· nacross extravaganza, held inside Cambell Park in picturesque Oahu, Hawaii. He was also the big winner, scoring three separate class victories: Open BB, 250cc Expert and Open Vet. Root joined a crowd of local racers from the nearby Islands to race against the best of the best for a one·day, all·or·nothing shootout for the Pineapple Arenacross Championship title. The event was put on by legendary motocross icon John "The Flyin' Hawaiian" DeSoto and his daughter Maile. The event was originally scheduled to be a two-day event, but day one was rained out, which forced the program to be run all in a single day. The opening moto saw the locals get the job done after Jason Hepa took the measure of Root for the first·moto win, but as promised, Root put his head down and rode like a professional, taking the next five moto wins, gate to finish. "I am really grateful to the folks at Pflueger Honda for this bike to ride," Root said. "I heard it's the owner's personal bike." After all was said and done, Root was crowned the Pineapple Arenacross Champion. WAil I can say is that racing in Hawaii is really a wonderful experience, Root said. "The people are friendly and laid back, and there is no tension like racing the So Cal scene. I really recommend racing here the next time you come for a vacation in Hawaii." Results II 60 NOV: I. Cable Creek Woods Race Woodford Wins First AWRCS Race By GRETCHEN ORTON CABLE CREEK, OH, MAY 12 The first of the Lojak's Yamaha Racing/Davis '" ~ r Q. Cambell Park: Newly crowned Pineapple Arenacross Champion Joe Root (left) "hangs loose" with event promoter and motocross legend John DeSoto in Oahu, Hawaii. Root captured the crown by winning three classes. Blackwell, Bennett and Barber. "The track was tight and fun," Bennett said after the race. "The GNCCs need to convert back to this type of racing. I will definitely be back for the rest of the series." Greenlee promised that the remainder of the races will be as tight and demanding as this one. Chuck calls this w ZI true American woods series" and feels that it's time to get racing back into the woods. This series is for motorcycles only; there 21re no ATVs tearing up the track before the bikes get on it. AII·new challenging courses, National Championship awards, and $500 to win the AA class are promised at every event. Cycle Sales/Grove City Motorsports/Augus· tine KTM/Five Star Cycle/WER/FMF/Ron Hartman Concrete/Pirelli/DP Brakes/Kosmic Signs & Designs/Thor/Renthal-sponsored American Woods Racing Championship Series (AWRCS) races started out with a thunderous bang. This new series, promoted by Chuck Greenlee, brought a few of the GNCC Pro/AA riders out to battle for the guaranteed S500 payout for the overall AA win. Some of the top riders who showed up for the event held in Cable Creek, Ohio, included J.T. Bennett, Doug Blackwell, Cole Calkins, Chuck Woodford, Duane Conner, Barry Hawk and Josh Lojak, to mention just a few. The race intertwined steep uphills, daring downhills, and creek crossing into a tight trail. The challenging track was grueling from the beginning of the race, but once the skies let loose and the rain began, the race took a tum ~ some would consider it for the better, others for the worse. Woodford held the lead from the beginning of the race, with Conner, Hawk, Calkins and Blackwell taking turns in second place all day. Conner and Calkins dropped out of the race early due to bike problems, which left Hawk and Blackwell to battle for second place. Once the rain started, Blackwell found his pace and held it in second place, leaving Hawk to battle with Bennett for the third-place position. Bennett, another good mud rider, found his second wind with the rain and took over the thirdplace position. The seventh lap of the race brought a few troubles to Hawk, who had to drop out of the race; he ended up fifth for the day. The race ended up with Woodford winning, followed by cue I • R.sults M O/A:. I. Chuck Woodfotd (Kaw): 2. Doug Blackwell (Hon); 3. J.T. Bennett (Yam): 4. John Barber (Suz): 5. &rry Hawk (Yam); 6.
