halfway flag, Hodges got the fourth spot and caught Setzer for third. Setzer was Hodges' next victim. Hodges caught Burch before the last lap and grabbed the lead. Burch had nothing for Hodges and settled for second. Back in third, Heath began to fall back, as Setzer put the pressure on for third. Setzer made the pass for third, but Heath had one more shot and repassed on the last lap. Daniel Griffin pushed the 125 all moto long against the 250s to finally get the fifth spot two laps before the end. Hodges got the Yamaha out front in the second moto to take the win. Burch followed in second. Setzer came back in this moto to get the third position, over Dewitt. In the 125cc class, Kevin Edgar showed the way, over Griffin. Result. P/W 50: I. Jones stayed close for the By AL WENZEL next lap and then retook the lead in an open field section. Both Taff and Dillingham closed in on the leaders. Taff moved by Jones and then hounded Gowing until Gowing crashed on the final lap. Taff, from Kearney, Missouri, went on to win, while Jones, Dillingham and Gowing battled right up to the checkers for the second-place spot, 30 seconds behind Taff, and finishing in that order. UVERMORE,CA,MAY4 Andy Shaffer came out on top in the Gran Prix 500cc Novice class on his 490cc Maico at the first night race of the Northwest Mako and CZ/AHRMA Northwestern Post-Vintage MX season at Club Moto MX. Shaffer charged out of the gate in the first mote, leading his riding buddy and class rival Ric Tipton around for several laps. Slowly, Tipton reeled in the charging Shaffer, and by moto's end Shaffer had tired and Tipton had taken over the lead. In the Gran Prix 250cc Intermediate class, Tiburon's own Dennis Rowedder was busy leading the pack around on his nicely restored Husqvama, but not without a challenge from Yamaha·mounted Mario Andreini until the checkers flew. This event also marked a return to AHRMA MX by Dave Myklebust, who was back in action after a two·year absence recovering from neck surgery. He kept John Gulliford honest in the Over 50 Novice class and was within striking distance of the Montesa rider at the flag. CARBONDALE, KS, MAY 4 In the first round of the Forward Motion Hare Scrambles Series, Shane Dipasquale was the dominant rider of the day. Dipasquale stayed up until midnight the night before, unboxing a brand-new 300cc Gas-Gas. His intent was to "break in" his new Santa Fe Trail Cycle machine. On the start of the AA class, Dipasquale pulled the holeshot and rocketed out to a big lead. Shawn Jones, on a Cannondale fourstroke, held down second, while Randy Weekley and Adrian Bryant, both on Gas Gas machines, battled over third. Dipasquale continued to improve his lead at a minute per lap, hovering around the 21-minute mark for each lap throughout the event. Jones dropped out with bike problems, handing Bryant second place at the 1 1/2-hour mark. Dell's Honda's Rich Anderson had trouble, stalling his brand-new CR450 in the early laps, but he soon came roaring through the pack. Anderson passed Weekley on lap five and closed in on Bryant at the checkers, but he had to settle for third - a fine ride for Anderson in his first~ever ride on a four·stroke. "This Honda is unbelievable, n Anderson said later. WI didn't get tired at all. I got excited on the start and flooded the bike. This 450 is a lot easier to ride than the to< 125 I bought from Doug Stone last year." In the A class, Yamaha-mounted Scott Henion took the holeshot, with O'Neal-spon- 68 JUNE 12, 2002' cue I • Club Moto MX: Mario Andreini (533) leads Scott Lawson and Gerald Mauricio (9M) at the first night race of the Northwest Maico and CZlAHRMA Northwestern Post-Vintage MX season, in livermore, California. n _ vv s In the Gran Prix 500cc Intermediate class, Mako-mounted Matt Itamura showed Don Gamer, Syd Jones and Andreini the fast way around the modified Club Moto track. ltamura looked at home on the many jumps around the Club Moto track, and those not paying attention may not have realized his bike was more than 20 years old. Suzuki-mounted Garner held on to second, and the hard-charging Andreini fmished up third. The second half was a real night race under the lights. The second Gran Prix 500cc Novice contest was a repeat of the first moto. with Shaffer taking an early lead and Tipton catching him about halfway and making the pass. However, this time, instead of fading back, Shaffer stayed close to Tipton. On the final lap, Shaffer was on Tipton's rear fender, and on the straight just before the flag, Shaffer turned the big Malco wide open to get past Tipton. Of course, at the end of that straight was a tum, and Shaffer was going way too fast to negotiate it. The resulting stop proved quite surprising for the track work d for Shaffer himself, who came to rest jus in front of the fence in front of the water pond. In the second Gran Prix 250cc moto, Andreini swept by Rowedder to take the over· all class win. The two had traded moto wins, with Andreini taking that tie-breaking secondmoto win for the overall. Andreini also took charge of the second Gran Prix 500cc Intermediate moto, with Itamura, Jones and Garner following. Andreini won the moto but not the war; ltamura took the overall with a better first-moto finish. Lone Over 30 Expert rider Scott Silvia led the entire field around the Club Moto track, making all the jumps look easy on his early Uni-Trok Kawasaki. Toward the back of the pack was a private battle between Over 50 Novice contenders Gulliford and Myklebust; Gulliford won the moto, but it appeared Myklebust had the best time, just getting to race again after his long absence. Las Vegas Karting Center Can You Beat a Pair of Schendels? By ROD GIRARD SLOAN, NV, MAY 5 Racing is a gamble, and for the fourth round of the 2002 season, the California Motorcycle Road Racing Association rolled the dice on the asphalt of the Las Vegas Karting Center. The father-and-son team of Jon and J.D. Schendel were impressive, racking up a combined three first- and one second-, third-, fourth· and seventh~place overall finishes. J.D. dominated both the Amateur Formula 50 and Stock classes, leading all but four laps. In Amateur Formula 50, Alan Mortenson led the opening laps in both races, with Schendel taking over on lap three. Mortenson rode solidly to an overall second, as T.J. Trevino and Craig StarT traded places from race to race for third and fourth place, respectively. A questionable post-race penalty was assessed against Trevino, giving Starr third overall and moving Brad Norling up to fourth. Trevino was moved back to seventh. Schendel led from wire to wire in Amateur Stock contest, while Dan Cashen, Scott Cohea and Torno Kobayashi fought among themselves for their respective finishes. The senior Schendel rode to two hardfought victories in the Veteran Stock class, besting Doug Hopkins in both races. Hopkins grabbed an early lead in race one while Schendel battled his way up past Blair Sullenger and Damian Saavedra. Unrelenting in his drive, it took Schendel five laps to catch and eventually pass Hopkins on the last lap. Race two had Sullenger leading the first lap, with Hopkins taking command on lap two.
