Roiling Hills Cycle Park: At the eighth round of the U.S. Eastern Motocross Spring Series, in Reidsville, North Carolina, Chad Newton (4) got both 125cc A holeshots, closely followed by eventual class winner Jim Neese (6). ers, and he put the block on Lough but Lough countered and beat him to the line.. Wagner rode his Suzuki to fifth. In moto two, once again Newton got the holeshot, followed closely by Neese, Wood, Lough and Simpson. Lough quickly disposed of Wood in the whoops to take third. Neese passed Newton on the first downhill and proceeded to check out! For the next two laps, Newton and Lough did battle, and on lap three, on the lower section, Lough secured second when Newton bobbled. At the line, Wood block-passed Newton as he had done in moto one. On the final lap, Neese was ahead by a mile. Once again, Wood tried to put the block on Lough, but second went to Lough by a wheel. William Bryant took over fourth at the line, moving Newton to fifth. The overall finishing order was Neese, Lough, Wood, Newton and Bryant. Neese went on to win six motos and the overall victories in the Over 25 A, 125cc A and 250cc A classes, beating Lough in tight motos in each. Fourteen 125cc riders rolled off the line, and Yamaha-mounted Ronnie Ling pulled the holeshot, followed by Malcolm Klepp, David Bauer, Jeremy Jacobs and Shawn Neilson. Bauer took second from Klepp after a tight three-lap battle. Jacobs and Neilson tangled, and Jacobs got up in fourth. Derek Whitfield finished fifth. Whitfield pulled the moto-two holeshot, with Bauer and Klepp in pursuit. Neilson, Vincent DeYoung and Jonathan Vincent followed. Vincent passed through the pack to fourth, behind Klepp. Meanwhile, Klepp and Bauer had resumed their battle from moto one. Klepp makes his move in the whoops, but the two locked bars and hit the ground, also 62 JUNE 12, 2002' eye • III taking out Vincent. Bauer and Klepp then decided to fight instead of race - while their bikes lay one atop the other. Gas came out of the overflow, and the bike became a makeshift bomb, both catching on fire. Parents got the bikes apart and put the fire out. Meanwhile, DeYoung, Neilson and Ling were fighting it out on the track. Jacobs had been moving to the front until an off-track endo into the woods stopped his momentum and hurt his wrist. At the finish, the order was Whitfield, Ling, DeYoung, Neilson and Noah Huskey. The overall order was Ling (1-2), Whitfield (5-1), DeYoung (6-3), Neilson (8-4) and Thomas Hardy (7-6) in fifth. Jacobs won the first Schoolboy moto in a cakewalk. However, he was unable to return for moto two due to a crash in the 125cc B class. This allowed Matt Campbell to take the overall wit a 2-1 tally. There was a tight two-moto battle for runner-up between Zackary Knight (4-2), Lucas Bauer (3-3), Justin Thrift (6-4) and David Heywood (5-5).Thrift was running second in moto one until Heywood took the two of them out on a drop-off. You could have thrown a blanket over the top runners at the finish of moto two. Ryan Shonya, Glen Martin and Joshua Thomas diced it up in the Supermini class. The three swapped the lead a couple of times every lap for two solid motos. Brad Harr finished a strong fourth in moto one, while Connor Clifton secured fifth, but Harr was beaten by William Bryant in moto two. The overall order was Shoo nya (I-I), Martin (2-2), Thomas (3-3), Harr (4-5) and Bryant (6-4). CN Rolling Hills Cycle Parte Reidsville, North Carolina Results: May 12, 2002 [Round 81 50 SHAFT: 1. AHRMA Short Track Salinas Valley Fairgrounds DiSalvo Sovereign of King City By MIKE VANCIL KING CITY, CA, JI\AY 17 T he third annual Ricky Graham Memorial AHRMA Vintage Short Track was held in the Roping Arena of the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City, California, and the entire evening was jam-packed with excitement - including the spectacular comeback of Joe DiSalvo on his BSA single, who won the Classic 750cc class. The heat race gave no tip-off that DiSalvo was going to prOVide the excitement in the final. Bultaco jockey Don Barmakian got off to a great start, but Triumph-mounted Alan Shaw quickly found a way around him. Then DiSalvo and Triumph rider Chris Wakula got by. The final was a different story. DiSalvo grabbed too much throttle and fought his "unicycle" all the way to the first corner. When it settled down to two wheels again, other riders to the right had eased off their throttles and DiSalvo led them down the back stretch on lap one. Wakula was getting some good drives off turns two and four, but he could not get a wheel under DiSalvo. At the checkers, it was a very happy DiSalvo with the win, followed by Wakula, Shaw and Barmakian. The hardcharging lone entrant in the Dino~aur class, Mark Milton, shared the heat race and final with this group and was never headed, leading the whole group from start to finish on his fierce-sounding Indian Warrior 500cc vertical twin. The Classic 250cc participants were all on two-strokes and very evenly matched in horsepower and ability. In the heat race, a hint of the final's outcome was given by the hard-charging Chris Rudy, on a beautiful Bultaco. He wasn't home free after gaining the lead, as first David Decam and then Dave Smith, both on Honda Elsinores, prOVided some challenges. Rudy persevered to take the checkers first, followed by Smith and Decam, and then Charles Harris, on another Bultaco. In the main event, Rudy burst into the lead from his pole-position start and rode a flawless race from start to finish. Decam was able to better his prior finish by beating Smith this time, and Harris pushed his Bultaco hard to finish third. The four participants in the Senior Over 50 c1a5s generated some good racing action. Veteran Triumph jockey Robert Scally had his Triumph 750cc geared just right, and he powered through the pack for the heatrace win, over Triumph-mounted Tom Horton, BSA single pilot Dan Phillips, and Steve Lacey, on a Honda single. Horton admitted during a trackside interview earlier in the evening that things weren't really going his way' He had broken two
