Georgia/Alabama Championship Series Round 6: Lazy River Motocross Ranch Fisher on Fire at Lazy River By PAC LEWIS CHATSWORTH,GA,MAYI2 azy River Motocross Ranch was the setting for round six of the Georgia/Alabama Championship Series_ Oconee Motorsports' Derrick Fisher took top Pro honors on the day, just ahead of Danny Smith. These two battled it out in all four 125cc A and 250cc A motos, with Fisher narrowly winning each time. In the first 250cc A moto, the lead changed no less than five times in one lap! Third place in 125cc A was Tony Graham, who was battling with a charging Cody Watford, who finished fourth. In the 250cc A class, the top two were Fisher and Smith, followed by Watford, Graham and Chad Anderson. The 65cc classes were simply dominated by Forrest Lane. With both the 65cc (10-11) and (7-9) classes running in the same moto, Forrest proved he was on a mission, as his class took the second gate and he was still the first rider to cross the finish line, even ahead of the 65cc (l0-11) winner Cody Haney. Behind Forrest in the 65c (7-9) class was Jesse Turner, who was also having an excellent day. Third went to Tyler Elkins. In the 65cc (10-11) class, Haney won, followed by Jonathan Smith and Casey Weichman. Lane showed his speed again in the 65cc (7-11) Modified class, winning both motos ahead of Kristian Hardy. Third went to Cody Haney, fourth to Patrick Harris, and rounding L 58 JUNE 12, 2002' cue I e out the top five was Ryan Rhymer. Leah Cantrell had an excellent day, despite a slight cold. She swept the 85cc (12-15) class, ahead of Chad Handrop and Michael Ridge. She also won the Supermini class with 3-1 scores, ahead of Chad Handrop and Gregory Roberts in some of the most competitive action of the day. In the 85cc (7-11) class, Kyle Perry took the holeshot and never looked back, as his I-I scores would prove, but right on his rear fender was Matt Bell, who finished second after a great ride, and Josh Scott rounded out the podium. Perry would have a harder time in the 85cc (9-13) class, as Josh Burdett stepped up and challenged him. Perry won the first moto, with Burdett in second, but in the second moto a bobble by Perry allowed Burdett all the time he needed to squeeze around and take the moto win and the overall. Perry finished second, just ahead of Bell. Arthur Colfield was fourth and Josh Scott fifth. The 125cc B class was an exciting one. Matt McGraw and Cory Cone battled for the lead the entire first moto. Cone took the holeshot aboard the YZ250F, but McGraw was right behind on his RM. The duel lasted all moto long, with neither rider willing to give an inch. McGraw found a faster line into the finish-line whoop section, doubling in from the inside, which allowed him to get around Cone at the start of the last lap and hold him off to take the first-moto win. neVI' • ,---------------------------------,w ~ -' ~ ~ ~ a. Lazy River Motocross Ranch: Chad Handrop (61) leads Leah Cantrell (322) and Michael Ridge (163) early in 85cc (12-15) action at round six of lhe Georgia/Alabama Championship Series. Cantrell went on to sweep both motos, with Handrop close behind and Ridge in third. The second moto was much the same, with McGraw and Cone going at it for the lead, but McGraw somehow came through to take the win and the overall, with Cone in second and Rob Wooden in third. McGraw also had a battle on his hands in the Youth division, with young Auston Albers. McGraw was able to hold off Albers, but not by much, as the lead changed hands several times in the two motos, but at the checkers it was McGraw taking narrow victories over Albers, with Chip Weatherup a close third. Albers did, however, continue his winning streak in the 125cc C class, as he tallied 1- I scores to take the overall. Fellow Suzuki- Yamaha of Dalton rider Weatherup didn't make things easy for Albers, as he led portions of both motos, but he couldn't hold off Albers for the entire race. Weatherup finished a very close second, with Kyle Paxton third_ Cone showed the same speed he had in the I25cc B moto in the 16-24 class, distancing himself from the competition and taking the overall. Adam Smith finished second, with Ricky Yelle third. The Vet classes were simply dominated by Mike Garrett.
