Western New Yorle Motocross Association, Inc. Round 5: Hunt Moto Parle Clingerman Hammers 'em on Thor Day By LARRY WOOSTER HUNT, NY, MAY 12 ound five of the Western New York Motocross Association Inc. series returned to Hunt Moto Park for Thor Day. The rainy conditions made prizes such as a new Thor hat or Tshirt for each first-place-overall finisher in every class a perfect award. Even happier were the three lucky riders who had their names drawn from the hat for a new Thor riding outfit! The rain kept many fair-weather riders home, but they missed a great day of action. The more-dedicated riders added up the points, gained experience, and will be even faster next week because of that experience. With the weather patterns the way they are this year, riders had better get used to competing in the rain, as the droughts of the last few years seem to be over. The 125cc Beginner class had a laundry list of hard-core riders all ready for the gate to drop for their first moto. Seven or eight bikes were all stacked up going into turn one and battling bar to bar for the extremely important holeshot. Matthew Coleman powered his Suzuki through turn one for the front-running position. Another Suzuki rider, Michael Lenartowicz, and Yamaha-mounted J.e. Cournan were close behind. Eating mucho mud from these guys were Yamaha rider Mike Siecieska and Suzuki jockey Joseph Krzemien. The R rest of the pack seemed to struggle with getting a grip on things while the front four riders pulled away. The importance of good balance was demonstrated as beginner after beginner struggled to get a grip. Siecieska grew tired of the view quickly and began to pick up the pace, passing Cournan and capitalizing on a mistake by Lenartowicz to move into second place. Coleman soon ran out of go-go juice and Siecieska moved past him to win moto number one. Moto two, the usual suspects again sped toward turn one, vying for the holeshot. This time they were three bikes wide, with New York terra "notso' firma flying everywhere. Cournan battled with Justin Biller, while Krzemien battled with Siecieska in classic Yamaha-vs.-Suzuki competition. What a pain it must be to try to score big fields of bikes such as these under such muddy conditions. Hats off to the WNYMA scorers for all their patience with riders who are in a hurry to get back to their pit area. Cournan hung on to improve on his first-moto finish of third to win moto two and capture first overall. Siecieska failed to back up his motoone win, taking fourth in moto two to finish second overall. Biller kept his Suzuki up front all day, posting 4-2 finishes to end the day in third overall. A great example of a rider benefiting on many different levels from rac- ing on rainy days like these is 50cc (7-8) and 60cc rider Chaz Clingerman. This young hotshoe races week in and week out, regardless of the rainy or muddy conditions that happen at any track. Clingerman always seems to place his Kawasaki and Polini machines among the top 10, if not top five, finishers at the end of each race day, but he was still chasing his first career first-overall finish. There isn't a track in the WNYMA Inc. series at which Clingerman hasn't raced in the rain a time or two over the past two seasons. On this day, all that hard work and effort paid off, as Clingerman won his first career firstoverall finish in the 50cc (7-8) class. Clingerman placed second in moto one, behind very fast KTM rider Pascal Schmitt. When Schmitt struggled in moto two, Clingerman kept to his race plan and won the moto - and the overall. Clingerman won because he has learned to pick better lines and grooves to race in under these conditions, based on his past experiences. Balance is another key skill young riders learn racing on days like these, as going slower and not falling is usually the faster way around the track than running fast and getting stuck in a rut for 30 seconds in every corner. Just ask Chaz. He'll tell you all about it. The WNYMA series will return to Hunt Moto Park on Sunday, June 30, for Scott USA Day. Riders finishing first, second and third overall in each class will receive a Scott USA Award, and three grand-prize drawings for great Scott USA gear will be held for all the riders entered. eN Hunt Malo Par1c Hunt, New Yor1c Results: May 1Z, ZDOZ (Round 51 50 (4·6): I.
