Florida Motocross Series Roun 5: Motocross of Marion County Layfield Lays DowntheLaw BY CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN REDDICK, FL, MAY 12 irk Layfield rode into town on his four-stroke Honda to show the competition who makes the law. layfield rode to impressive wins in the Over 30 and Over 35 classes with four moto wins. The other riders seemed to back off when Layfield was on the course. The day was hot and dry, as most of the state of Florida has seen no rain in at least a month. The Blackburns and track crew did a good job of keeping the dust down to a minimum, as 315 riders tried their luck on the track. K Layfield did not get the start he needed in the first combined Over 30 and Over 40 moto. Les Burnside led the field until Willis Brock took over partway through the first lap. Then disaster struck, as Burnside slid off going down into the pit. The other riders did not know of the downed rider and a pile-up occurred. Brock pulled out to a sizable lead until Layfield reeled him in. Layfield made the pass and motored away with the win. Brock finished second on the track and was the first Over 40 rider. The rest of the finishing order in the Over 30 class was Michael Shepard, Zach Ische, Mike Badalamenti and Chris Leonard. ,..------------------------------------,z w o a: < J: S w z " < o ~ z a z Ul is , '" ~ () in ~ Q. Motocross of Marion County: Brandon Abell finished with a 1-3 score In the 125cc C class to win the overall and scored a 1-4 for third overall in the 250Cc C class at the fifth round of the Florida Motocross Series in Reddick. In other racing action, Riley Hall took two class wins. Hall won both motos of the 250cc B class. Shawn Mayo followed Hall home in second both motos. Bradley Bernier finished third in the first moto, followed by Cole Studstill and Elliot Cook. Studstill gained a spot the second moto to finish third, as Cook and James Cobb each moved up to round out the top five. Jeremy Shuttleworth led the first 16-24 moto until a mishap let Hall by for the moto win. Eric Stewart held off Bernier for second. Mayo and Ryan Warren had a battle to finish in the top five. Shuttleworth recovered for the win in moto two, but a sixth-place finish in the first moto was only good for third overall. Hall finished second to take the overall. Warren moved up to third, as Stewart slipped to fourth. Finishing fifth was Bernier. Rivals Kenny Wilson and Don Besnier traded moto wins in the 250cc Beginner class. Besnier took the first moto; Wilson won the second and overall. Anthony Mataschewsky finished third both times out. Peter Lurtz recovered from two bad starts and charged to finish fourth each time. Nevin McLeran rounded out the top five each time. Steven Stojack Jr. continued his winning ways in the 65cc Beginner class, taking a two-moto sweep. Jonathan Parker kept Stojack honest to finish runner-up in each moto. Liam Eller and Kyle Combee finished third and fourth in the first moto and then switched places the second time out. Clifford Sanders took fifth twice for fifth overall. eN The second moto was another Layfield show. Leonard put the hammer down to finish second, and series leader Steve Stojack finished third. Shepard slipped to fourth, and Ische slipped to fifth. The Over 35 and Over 45 classes also ran combined. Layfield took moto one, ahead of local riders Drew Justice and Brock. Stojack rode to fourth, and Jim Badgett rounded out the top five. In the second moto, Layfield rode into the sunset, and all the laws were set. Justice and Brock fought for the runner-up spot, with Justice coming out on top. Stojack, having an off day, finished fourth again, and Craig Johnson rounded out the top five on a borrowed four-stroke. The first moto of the 125cc C class saw Brandon Abell leading the biggest class of the day. Behind Abell was Georgia rider Jordan Gooch, Levi Sammons, Matthew Pedrero and Ryan Luke. Abell slowly pulled out for the win, and Gooch finished second. Pedrero wound up third, and Sammons slipped back into the pack. Luke moved up to fourth, and there was a fight for fifth. Kyle Levalley started eighth and moved up on Mateo Usuga, in fifth. Usuaga held off the advances of Levalley to round out the top five. Luke pulled the second-moto holeshot, as Levalley and Sammons filed in behind. By the end of the first lap, Sammons moved to second. Levalley lost another spot to Abell. Running fifth was Mike Morgan. Sammons chased down the leader, Luke. At the halfway mark, Sammons made the pass after the whoops before the big anthill. Sammons rode to the moto win, while Luke began to fade. Luke held off overall winner Abell at the flag for second. Levalley and Morgan kept the fourth and fifth spots. cue I _ Motacrass at Marian County Reddick, florida Results: May 12, 2002 [Round 5 at 12) so OIL·INJ: I. Michael Miller (Hus); 2.
