ASMA Road Races Round 2: Arroyo seeo Motorplex The Helmet Hog Takes the Helms By DR. BOB DEJYIING, NM, /iIAY5 R oger "The Helmet Hog" Heemsbergen got right back on track by winning all six races that he entered at the second round of the ASMA Road Races. Whenever a helmet will be awarded to the winner of a race at Arroyo Seco, Heemsbergen wins that race_ On this day, Heemsbergen hogged two Shoei helmets and one AFX helmet (though he donated one of the Shoeis to his sponsor, Ron Costa of Zia Homes, and the AFX to the son of his friends Brent and Brenda McCalmon). Costa grabbed the holeshot of the 600cc Beginner contest and led the first two laps on his Honda CBR-600. Dr. Matt Robbins caught Costa on the third lap and they went at it for the last couple of laps. Robbins barely beat Costa to the finish line. Brad Testerman, sponsored by J.S. Performance in Albuquerque, finished third. Heemsbergen started his domination in the Southwest Thunder contest. His longtime friend Doug Schmitz came all the way from Oklahoma City, and the two put on a great display of talent and drafting 78 JUNE 5, 2002' e: U e: • • on their Suzuki SY-650s. Heemsbergen just edged out Schmitz at the finish. Professional Plumbing's Tony Luketich from Tucson, Arizona, finished third on his Ducati. Formula Extreme was the first "Helmet Race" of the day. Shoei had sent gift certificates for two XS-P2 helmets - their top-of-the-line, $800 helmet. The Helmet Hog grabbed the holeshot and never looked back, leading every lap to win his first of three helmets on the day. Gran Prix Kawasaki-sponsored Ninja 600 rider Tony Silvera was second. Mike Shreve was third. Costa grabbed the holeshot in the Half-Hour Beginner Endurance Race and built up a substantial lead over Deming's own Bruce Fairres. The race had to be stopped on lap three due to a scary-looking crash by Ducati pilot Tom Spendarian, who took a little nap in the middle of turn two. Spendarian shook it off but was done for the day. When racing resumed, Robbins got off to a much better start and gave Costa a run for the checkers, though Costa pulled out a few bikes lengths by the last lap. Fairres finished third in his firstever road race. n • _ s Cedar Raceway 1593 S. The 600cc Superbike contest was another Shoei helmet race. Once again, Heemsbergen won another Shoei XS-P2, but he immediately gave it to his sponsor, Costa. Shreve and Silvera put on a great race; Silvera led every lap except the one that counted, as Shreve beat Silvera by a wheel. Yamaha Mexico's Carlos Guerrero came all the way up from Chihuahua, Mexico, for his first race at Arroyo Seco, and he came through the pack to finish third. In Formula 40 action, Peter "The Professor" Bonner, riding Sammy Richard's Yamaha R-6, grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and pulled out a huge lead on Costa. However, Costa showed that he is still learning, and he came very close to catching Bonner on the last lap_ Dr. Robert Dillow came in third on his Mr. Motorcycle-sponsored Honda CBR-600_ In the Open Beginner contest, Costa once again' showed that he is no longer a Beginner by running away with the race. Costa was followed by Testerman, with Fairres in third again. The Formula two event was another Suzuki SY-650 race, between Doug Schmitz and Trent McCalmon. These two racers put on a good display of sportsmanship and gave the huge crowd a good race_ Schmitz took the win, with McCalmon second. The ninth race was comprised of the 750cc Superbikes and] OOOcc Twins. Once again, Heemsbergen ran away and hid from everybody on his very fast Yamaha R-1, sponsored by Dunlop/Sport Tire Services, Rock Oil, Lockhart Phillips and Western Auto Body in Lordsburg, New Mexico. Shreve finished second, and Carlos Guerrero was third, barely nipping Silvera at the line. "We've been lold by literally lhousands that this is the finest facility on the West CoasL' - promoter Mike Arner - By DICK GOOOWll't Race ] 0, featuring the 500cc Superbikes and 650cc Twins, was a carbon copy of the Formula Two event. Schmitz and McCalmon had another good race on their SY-650s, with Schmitz winning again_ In Open Superbike competition, a $200 purse was offered, and Heemsbergen was once again up to the job. He ran away from everyone to win $100. Silvera picked up $60 by holding both Shreve and Guerrero back to finish second. Guerrero picked up $40 of gas money for his trip back to Mexico, and Shreve was fourth. The last race of the day was the Half-Hour Pro Endurance Race, which turned out to be Heemsbergen's sixth win of the day. Guerrero was already loading up for the long drive back to Chihuahua, so that left Shreve and Silvera to battle over second place. Shreve held off Silvera for runner-up.
