A clever mix of boulders, logs, grass and mud provided the necessary challenge. The Modern Classic class, with machines up to 1979, includes some of AHRMA's best riders on the most advanced machines eligible for Vintage trials. There were four riders in the Expert class, riding the numberone line. Scores in the 30s were common, but Yamaha-mounted Charles Mallow bettered the best with only eight dabs to take the win. Keith Dunlop, also on a Yamaha, turned in a good ride to take second in class. The Intermediate class was the biggest class of the day. lllinois rider Donald Hale touched down only three times to take a win, but Honda rider James Smith (Eastern AHRMA tech steward) and Monark-mounted Tony Glueck (Midwest trials coordinator) were tied for second, with Smith breaking the tie with more cleans. They gather in Ridgedale, Missouri, near Branson, famous for country music and for its natural beauty. For two glorious days, the peace and quiet is broken by the boom and ring of vintage BSA, Triumph, Greeves and Bultaco machines. This event has become a mainstay on AHRMA's schedule, not because it draws record entries, but because of the natural terrain and pristine trails. No motorcycles touch these trails in the weeks and months between AHRMA's visits, giving it an opportunity to heal. Observed Trials competition began on Saturday morning, with 10 sections laid out in a 4-mile loop over T National Trials points keeper Michael Peters of Iowa and Bultaco rider Curtis Harper, the flamboyant coordinator of the Missouri Vintage MX Series. First-time trials rider Mitch Winder commented that this was "the most fun I've had on a motorcycle: The pre-1965 Premier Ughtweight class is limited to 250cc machines and includes some very unique bikes. Expert riders Bob Ginder, aboard his Mic Andrews James, and Mike Parsley, on a Triumph Cub, are regular competitors, trading wins from one event to another every season. At Ridgedale, it was Ginder's turn to shine: He took only one point for the lowest score of the day. Parsley took a humble second. Bruce and Joe Clegg drove down from Indiana, both with Greeves, doubling their chances of taking home a trophy, but Edward Logan, on a geared-down B40 BSA, walked away with the Intermediate win. Novice Randall Witt on a Greeves, touching only four times, earned the Novice-class win. Behind him were Rick Ullie of Ohio, also on a Greeves, in second, and event promoter Gary Gillum, aboard a BSA, taking third. Gillum also won the prestigious Roger Fogg Teapot for cleaning section three by displaying the most "panache.· Only two Premier Heavyweights JUNE 5, 2002· cue • • n • _ s BEG; 1. Many of the same riders from the previous day's observed-trials event were preparing to compete, although on more high-strung crosscountry bikes. The Gillum crew had laid out a 4-mile course in the same area as the previous day's trials loop. The plan was to ride the course for one hour in a hare scrambles format. In the Over 50 class, Expert Ohioan Rich Havenar outran Tennessee's Bob Ginder, and Intermediate rider Dennis Brown bettered Maico rider Ron Winget. Brown could be heard cheering above the roar of his CZ as he passed the disabled Maico. Former world motocross champ Jeff Smith, aboard a Can-Am, led BSA rider Corky Root for a win in the Over 60 Expert class, and Over 60 Novice rider Ted Landers drove down to defend his lead in the National A 74 The Gillum Fann Ridgedale, Missouri Results: May 4, 2002 IReund SI AHRMA National Cross Country Series Round 3: The Gillum Fann By The Gillum Fann: Scott Dowler (1) rode his Bultaco to fourth place in the Modern Classic Expert class at round six of the AHRMA National Observed Trials Series In Ridgedale, Missouri. entered the Ridgedale trial. They were both big 500cc pre-unit BSA singles, weighing in at over 300 pounds. Ron Winget showed up with a venerable old Gold Star, and Don Schmutzler brought out his father, Whitey Schmutzler's Alloy Clipper. Both riders scored unwanted points due to vapor-locking BSAs, but Winget earned fewer and secured the firstplace points. Schmutzler vowed to return with a cooler BSA at the next AHRMA trial. A lively awards ceremony followed the event. Jennifer Preis, Branson's own 2002 high school prom queen, served as the trophy girl for the vintage meet. eN series. Being a soccer coach at home, he had to get creative to come up with an excuse to miss his team's game. "One must set priorities and make sacrifices to pursue a championship," said Landers. (He didn't fool anyone; they knew he just wanted to ride his vintage Penton in the Missouri woods. Unfortunately, his team lost their soccer game. It looks like Ted's was not the only sacrifice.... ) Classic-class Expert rider David Lamberth, former coordinator of the Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series and current AHRMA executive director, rode his first AHRMA cross country event as an Expert after trouncing the competition in Georgia last month as an Intermediate. That upgrade didn't handicap him much. Lamberth led the second-placed rider, Randy Lusk, aboard his 500cc Triumph twin, passing many riders from earlier minutes. Intermediate Ohioan Rick Lillie overcame the challenge of Chris Makynen to carry the win. Makynen had planned to ride an XL-150 at Ridgedale, but ignition failure during
