Briggs & Stratton Motorplex: Premier Supermotard winner Ben Carlson (27) leads Jeremy DeRuyter (81) and Shane Myer (204) onto the front straightaway at the second round of the Supermotard Challenge, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. ered in the Middleweight Supermotard class. In the start of the final race, one rider with a stalled bike was still on the line as the rest of the field was running up to turn one. Diedrich had to work for the lead in the first couple of turns. By the time the group had gotten to turn seven, Diedrich was in the lead and had already put a small gap between himself and the rest of the field. Myers, Ron Zastrow and Matt Jensen were hot on the trail of the leader, but no one was able to mount any challenge. The top-five running order for the rest of the race was how it finished: Diedrich, Myers, Zastrow, Jensen and Todd Schuh. eN and was making a run for it when he lost the front end of his Pro Plates/DGTR MetalWorks/Torque Center/Southeast Sales/Mid-Cities Motorsports-sponsored Honda CR250 and crashed. This was not the thing to do with 12 other riders following closely behind. Carlson got tied up in the incident. Diedrich, Myers and DeRuyter were now the lead group. After a close encounter with Carlson's bike, Janisch got his bike up and running and started to make a charge for the front from the last position. Carlson managed to get going in the fourth spot, about 10 bike lengths back from the lead pack. He then used the power of his Husqvarna NOX to catch and pass DeRuyter on lap two. Myers was the next to fall to the speed that Carlson had going for him, at the beginning of lap three. Carlson then powered past Diedrich on the front straightway at the start of lap four and was never challenged again for the lead. By the end of the race, he had a 28-second cushion on the rest of the field. Janisch worked his way into fifth place after his fall. Diedrich had the competition cov- Wisconsin, on September 7. This year the series has increased to four rounds with the addition of Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minnesota. Motosports Park promoter Aaron Vincer prepped the track to everyone's liking. KTM rider Tom McShane took advantage of that with a good holeshot in the first Over 45 A moto and led for the first four laps. Racer X publisher/advertising guru Scott Wallenberg passed Greg Mellinger on lap three for third and set his sights on McShane. Wallenberg took the lead in a new whoop section after the finish line to edge past McShane. Wallenberg put a little distance on the pack until McShane powered through the uphill whoop section, but Wallenberg was on the gas also, refusing to give McShane the lead back. Wallenberg checked out with a three-second lead at the finish. McShane was runner-up. Gary Walkowski went from seventh to third by moto's end. In the second moto, Wallenberg was buried in the pack on the first lap. McShane took the holeshot, the win and the overall by posting 2-1 scores. Walkowski went 3-2 for second overall. Wallenberg made his way through the pack but came up short, finishing fourth (ahead of Mellinger) and third overall. Alex Rossetto snagged the holeshot in the first Over 25 A moto, with Jeff Hill in tow. Rossetto led for the first lap, but Wisconsin fast man Rodney Van Eperen was on a mission. Racing his YZ250 for the first time, Van Eperen had a little trouble coming out of the gate but still man- aged an eighth-place start in a field of 19. By the third lap he was on the heels of Hill and Rossetto, while Karter Busse moved up too. Rossetto gained a little ground on lap three, while Van Eperen moved past Hill into second. Van Eperen caught up to hill a few corners later and made the pass on Rossetto's four-stroke in the switchbacks to take the lead. Meanwhile, Busse sneaked into third and passed Rossetto and Van Eperen for the lead all on the same lap. Van Eperen caught a second wind two laps later and came charging down the downhill whoops, outjumping a surprised Busse to the corner and into the lead. Van Eperen and Busse stayed close for two laps, but Van Eperen scored the moto win. Busse held on to second, while Hill got past Rossetto for third. Van Eperen lined up to the inside of the gate for the second moto, hoping to cut the other riders off in the tight left-hander first corner. Busse gated well and outbraked the firstmoto winner, but it was Jeff Bennett who got the holeshot. Busse locked bars with another rider in the second corner, letting Van Eperen by. Van Eperen took the lead by the end of the first lap, while Bennett dropped back to seventh. Busse moved into second but got a little too close to the leader and rubbed tires, Busse hit the ground hard. Van Eperen led the rest of the way unchallenged. Busse remounted in sixth and regained second one lap later but posted a DNF a lap after that. Van Eperen aced both motos for the overall while Hill went 3-2 for second overall.
