ner moto. with Honda rider Jack Shi· monishi giving chase, followed by KX rider Darren Hanson in third. Fourth was being held by Santiago Betan· court, riding a Yamaha. Murphy was in control out front and increasing his lead with each lap. The race was going to be for the second through fourth positions, as Murphy was not faltering. On lap two, Betancourt made his way past Hanson, putting himself into the number·three spot. On lap two, Hansen was again passed, by James Velasco, and was now sitting in fifth. The race order was now Murphy, Shimonishi, Betan· court, Velasco and Hanson. On the third lap, Velasco kept his charge going and was able to pass Betan· court to take over the third spot. The top five riders remained in the same order until the finish: Murphy crossed the line first with a big lead over Shi· monishi in second, Velasco third, Betancourt fourth, and Hanson rounding out the top five. Moto two was another Murphy win, though the runner·up positions went to different riders. Murphy again gated well and was being chased by Yamaha· mounted Drew Doran, with Ben Trujillo in third aboard a KX. Fourth was being held by Andrew Logliucci, also on a KX, and Shimon· ishi was fifth. Murphy remained smooth out front, with Trujillo now knocking on Doran's back door. By lap three, Trujillo had made his way past Doran for second, and he now set his sights on Murphy. Further back, Makana Hansen was overcom· ing a bad start and was now up to sixth place. By the end of lap three, the running order was Murphy, Trujil· 10 and Doran, and Hansen was now up to fourth, with Shimonishi still fifth. The top five appeared to be locked up. Then Shimonishi managed a last· lap pass on Hansen for the number-four spot. The final order was Murphy, Trujillo, Doran, Shimonishi and Hansen. Needless to say, Murphy took the overall. The 80cc (8-12) featured many of the same players, with similar results. Murphy went 1-1 for the overall, with Betancourt bettering his results for a respectable second via 2-2 scores, and third overall went to Suzuki jockey Madis Saue (4-3). Moving up to the 80cc (13-16) class, Suzuki rider Adam Kowalczyk dominated the racing on this day, going 1-1 for the overall. He was fol· lowed by Yamaha pilot Beau Weigand (2-2) and then Luke Layton (3-3), on the yellow Suzuki. Honda rider Tom Smith took the 250cc Beginner·c1ass honors on the weekend, going 1- 1. Smith had good starts in both motos and backed them up with consistent laps to take the win. Second overall went to Casey Kiernan (5-2), riding a Yamaha. Kier· nan gated in the top lOin moto one and eventually crossed the checkers in fifth. In moto two, Kiernan started right up front, and he finished second, behind Smith. The final podium spot went to Geoff Shenk, on a Honda. Shenk started behind Smith in moto one and was able to hold on to the number·two spot throughout the moto. Moto two was a challenge for Shenk, who started around 10th. Shenk managed to work his way to fifth by the end, and that secured his third-overall finish via 2-5 scores. The popular Dash For Cash win went to Pro rider Jeff Northrop, on a Kawasaki. The Mini Dash For Cash win went to Novice rider Beau Weigand, on a Yamaha. It's pretty sure the riders will enjoy a little extra spending money. The Jump contest winner was jumping sensation J.R. Alvernaz. eN Cemegie SVRA Part< Tracy, Cellfomie Resulb: April 28, 2002 [Round 2J 50 SHAFT: I. Steven Cancilla (Hon); 2. Brandon DUlirte (Yam); 3. Scott Crane (Yam). 50 (4-6): I. STTARS Cycle Wortd SuperTT American Racing Series Round 3: Solano County Fairgrounds Chisum Gets His First! By BRIAN CATTERSON two heats. And for the first time, so many 50cc riders entered the Mini VALLEJO,CA,APR.28 n just his second ride on a KTM, Josh Chisum scored his first·ever Premier· class victory as the STTARS Cycle World SuperTT Series returned to the temporary racecourse at the Solano County Fairgrounds northeast of San Francisco. Chisum has switched brands twice in the last few months, campaigning a privateer Yamaha YZ400F and Honda CRF450R before landing a ride on the PMS Motorsports/Kern KTM 520 SX. He rode the orange· and· black bike to the Sportsman· class victory in the previous week· end's Mesa Marin Raceway Series round, and then, fitting it with 17·inch wheels per Premier·c1ass rules, hand· i1y won the championship round at Vallejo. No fewer than 87 riders turned out for this second annual event, promot· ed by McAllister Motorsports as part of the weeklong Sonomafest at nea r· by Sears Point Raceway. The area's strong dirt·track contingent made for record entries, the Middleweight and Open classes necessitating multiple heat races to determine the starting grids for the finals, and the Sportsman and Novice races also requiring I Motard class that they were given their own class. Yet, despite the large number of competitors, the racing was very safe, as there were no reported injuries and the ambulance never moved. A controversial start to the Pre· mier·c1ass final saw Chisum get the holeshot, followed by Mark Cern icky off the second row, Casey Yarrow, Aaron Howe and AI Salaverria. Heat· race winner Leonardo "Pucho" Bagnis uncharacteristically was caught nap· ping when the green flag waved, but he appeared to be the fastest man on the track once his tires were warmed up. Though Chisum was hotly pursued by Volcom/Uptime Honda CRF450R rider Cern icky, the pair were destined to finish one· two a long ways in front of the pursuing pack, who seemed to be slowing each other by playing offense/defense. Yarrow would come into the two hairpins with the rear end of his Roseville Cycle CRF hung out so far that it made it tough for the others to set up for a pass! On lap eight of 12, Bagnis finally got past Salaverria on the outside of the hairpin at the end of the long straight, off the racing line in the "dirty stuff." Bagnis then went to work on Salaverria's Scuderia West KTM teammate, Howe, passing him in the very same place. Bagnis then set off after Yarrow, and on lap 11 made what Yarrow later called "an unbelievable pass" in the same cor· ner in which he'd been successful before. There was nothing' Bagnis could do to catch the leaders in the time remaining, however, and he was forced to settle for third. Yarrow crossed the finish line in fourth, followed by Howe, Salaverria, series founder Don Canet on the Fast By Ferracci Husqvarna Nox, and three· time series champ Rick Pearce, on the American Honda CR500. Local road racing hero Brian Parriott tried his hand at SuperTT racing for the first time on a Honda CRF450R and finished a creditable ninth, while Husqvarna rider John Davis rounded out the top 10. Solano County Fairgrounds: Training with Doug Chandler must be paying off, because Josh Chisum (428) scored his first-ever SuperTT Premler-class victory over Mark CernIcky (2) in Vallejo, California. cue I • n e _ s • JUNE 5. 2002 65
