In the race for the 2002 Premierclass championship, Bagnis lost a little ground to Cern icky , the former now leading the latter 82 to 75. Chisum actually won twice on the day, riding his "old" Honda CRF450R to the Sportsman-class win. Cern icky went one better in the Middleweight class, the three-time class champ scoring his third consecutive victory on his CRF. And in the closest race of the day, Yarrow narrowly beat Canet to top the Open class. Round four of the STTARS Cycle World SuperTT Series will be another McAllister Motorsports affair at Ukiah Speedway in Ukiah, California, on June 1. eN Solano County fairgrounds Vellejo, CalifDmie Results: April 28, 2002 IRound 3 of 10J 50: 1. OMRA Cross CoUnby Series Round 3: Moonshine Hare SCrambles No Clowning Around for Bozarth Bv KACE ALLEN BROTHERS,OR,APR.28 I n the AA wave, Travis Bamford got the holeshot, with Yamaha-mounted Jason Sigfrid right behind him. Immediately after the first turn was a tricky mudbog that provided an opportunity for passing, and coming out of the bog side by side were Waiter Schwarz and Yamaha pilot Tyler Whitcomb. Schwarz got the best of Whitcomb as they climbed the hill out of the valley, but then he crashed his KTM 200 EXC in some rocks, handing third to Whitcomb and losing several more spots while getting remounted. Meanwhile, Jeremy Puma was midpack, struggling with severe arm pump. Ricky Bozarth, who got a terrible start when he had to kick his Husaberg three times, started passing riders throughout the first lap. As the leaders approached the pits at the end of the first lap, Sigfrid got around Bamford for the lead. Bamford followed Sigfrid for a lap while Bozarth continued to move to the front. Eventually Bozarth caught the lead pair, and he passed Bamford, but it took Bozarth several tries to get around Sigfrid's YZ250. "Jason is more formidable than I thought," said Bozarth. At last he made a pass stick on the third lap, and he gapped Sigfrid significantly as he attempted to check out. Puma continued to struggle with arm pump until he pitted on the third lap. During the pit, his arm pump 66 JUNE 5. 2002' II: U II: I e faded away, and after that Puma attacked the course much more aggressively. He left the pit in about eighth place and began pushing his KTM 200 toward the leaders. Whitcomb had been following Bamford's KTM 520 around the course since Bozarth had gone by, unable to make a pass for third. After the third lap, Puma caught and passed them both in a grassy section. Inspired, Whitcomb followed Puma's example and passed Bamford just before the pits. Puma and Whitcomb left the pits together, and in the mudbog they collided, Whitcomb squeezing Puma toward the course ribbon at the edge of the bog. Puma held Whitcomb off with an extended leg, edging his competitor for the lead as they left the bog. Meanwhile, Schwarz was making up some of the positions he had lost during his first-lap dismount. As he caught Nev LaBorde, LaBorde crashed his Suzuki DR-Z400, letting Schwarz by. "Nev wadded it up in some braking bumps, and I never saw him again," said Schwarz. "Nev hit me from behind in a dusty section," Whitcomb recounted, "and I never saw him after that." As Bozarth came through the pits to begin his final lap, a course worker mistakenly directed him to the finish chute. Sigfrid stopped and let Bozarth know that they had another lap left to race, and in a show of sportsmanship he let Bozarth lead back onto the racecourse. Somewhere on the fifth lap, Sigfrid flattened his rear tire, and he chased n e _ s Bozarth for the entire last lap on that flat tire. "I only felt it in the mud and on high -speed sweepers," recalled Sigfrid. "I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did!" By the last lap, Puma had climbed to third, but Bozarth and Sigfrid were out of sight, and Jeremy simply couldn't overcome such a huge gap. Whitcomb, however, had not given up on passing Puma. He· pushed, staying close enough to capitalize on any mistake Puma might make. "Unfortunately, he didn't make any," said Whitcomb. Bamford continued to fade in fifth, and Schwarz was gaining on him until he, too, started to tire. "If I'd known Travis was just in front of me," Schwarz said, "I would've wicked it up!" "Jason has youth on his side," Bozarth admitted after winning the race, "but I've got the experience, so that makes us even. It was a lot of fun! I want to thank Gary [the race promoter] and the Hatfields [the property owners] for letting us race out here and for putting on a great race." Bozarth went on to thank his sponsors Husaberg USA, KTM/Husaberg of Gresham, MSR, Steahly, and Cooper oil. He also thanked his "pit crew" (his fiancee, Tammy Lamb). "It was a great course - some new stuff this year!" said the runnerup, Florence Yamaha/Fastway / Azonic/O'Neal/DH 1-sponsored Sigfrid. "I was in fifth gear more [today] than in the six months before!" "I had had really bad arm pump for the first three laps," reported Hanson's KTM/Moose/IMS-backed Jeremy Puma, "but it went away when I pitted. At one point, a lapper kicked up a rock that hit me in the stomach, but I made it up to third by about the fifth lap. I think [Sigfrid] was about two minutes ahead [of me] at the end of the race." eN Moonshine IIlIre ScnlDbl.. Brothers, Oregon Results: April 2B, ZOOZ IRound 3J AA: 1. Rick Boz8rtl"l (Hus); 2. Texas Series Round 1: Burteson Motocross Park Self Helps Himself to the Wins Bv KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER BURLESON, TX, APR. 28 RC'S Corey Self made the trek from south Texas to net the overall wins in the 65cc (9-11), 65cc Open and 85cc (7-11) events at the opening round of the 30th annual Texas Series, hosted by Burleson Motocross Park. Heavy rains canceled the originally scheduled opening round at Mosier Valley the first weekend of April, so the Burleson round was dubbed the kickoff round. Vying for factory contingencies, 305 entered riders were on hand for a perfect day of racing. SeWs most difficult overall victory came in the 65cc Open class, in which he entered the second moto with fourth-place points. Chaz Holladay had won the first moto, followed by Tommy Miller and Kaleb Kerr before Self took the checkered flag. G However, Holladay was absent from the field in moto two, and Self was on his game. Self took the win and used his 4- 1 score to claim the overall. Miller (2-3) was second. Gage Martin (6-2) was third overall. Self got the holeshot in the first combined 65cc (6-8) and (9-11) moto, with Holladay at his rear wheel. Holladay chased Self down on lap two and took the lead when Self miscued and fell back to fourth. Caleb Reid and Martin slipped by Self, but Self relentlessly worked his way past both riders to finish second, behind Holladay. Holladay grabbed the moto-two holeshot, with Self behind him. Holladay led the first lap but went down on lap two and then Self miscued again, dropping back to third, with Holladay remounting in fourth. Miller assumed the lead, with Martin in the runner-up spot. Self charged as the white flag
